There seems to be this idea that schools were better in the old days, kids were smarter in the old days, and the proof is because of the moon landing

I have become used to reading this reasoning on the internet, but I have now heard in person, from a teacher.

Lines in some variation of this: 'Schools were doing everything better, and we even landed on the moon.'

When I heard it in person, it was a bit astonishing. So, I am going to ask you all here. How much validity is in this?
