General Knowledge Test
I always enjoy those videos where people go around college campuses or city streets in America and start asking random people questions that are usually common knowledge, or something widely taught in High School.
I decided to write my own list of questions that I figured are pretty common knowledge or taught in high school. Some are easy, some are hard, mostly focused on America. If any of you wanted to do a video where you question Americans on basic things you could use my list as a basis, or if anyone just wants to test their knowledge or the knowledge of their friends they can.

Secondary School where teachers prohibit students to use wikipeadia as a source for information.
Whenever students make projects, presentations or write essays they are prohibited to use wikipedia because: "Everyone can edit wikipedia so there's a big chance that information is totally wrong there." But at the same time teachers allow to use any other website, doesn't matter if it's trusted site or some kind of word press site, some even allow to write: "google.com" to the sources. What are your thoughts about that?

An occupation that doesn’t require dealing with people or numbers?
Are there any respectable careers out there that involve neither?
One of my cousins is a teacher, another one is a lawyer, one would be a national-level athlete if she wasn’t still a few years too young to compete against adults, and I constantly hate the fact that I’m the only one in the family who didn’t turn out to be anything.
How do I fix this?

True empathy
I had the most amazingly wonderful experience this morning in a life skills room in our local high school, where one student and his teacher were performing a jam session for the other students and teachers as well as a group of folks from other rooms. The student performer who Is nonverbal and has significant cognitive and physical challenges, played bass and lip-synched while his teacher played keyboard next to him. Watching the interaction between student and teacher and the response of the audience many of whom face significant challenges of their own brought tears to my eyes. People sang along danced, clapped, and hooted and howled at the end of each song. If only all typical people could be as supportive, encouraging, and appreciative as the students were for each other, the world would be so much kinder a place.

What if the crisis in public education is not what you think?
Over the past month, teachers in West Virginia, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Arizona, Colorado, and North Carolina led mass protests, accusing state officials of denying them a fair living wage. In March, the Secretary of Education, who promotes charter, parochial, and private school options, could not explain the effects of her policies on public schools in a now viral television interview. Parents in New York recently called for the ouster of the state education commissioner, citing botched standardized testing. Education, some say, continues to put our nation at risk.
Inarguably, public education is in crisis. But how, precisely?
The crisis is commonly framed like this: Because outdated schools fail to prepare children sufficiently to compete in the 21st century, perennially evident in the persistent achievement gap at home and international test performance abroad, standardized tests should be used to hold teachers directly accountable while parents should be empowered to choose better schools for their children. It is a narrative as satisfying as it is unsound.

Question, looking for recommendation with online Bachelor's Degree
So I'm looking to earn a Bachelor's Degree online, and I'm fairly clueless, so I'd really appreciate any advice/suggestions.
So here are my priorities from most important to least.
-
Speed. I want to get my degree as soon as possible, and I'm willing to work for it, option to fast track would be cool.
-
Prestige. A useful-sounding degree from a somewhat reputable sounding university would be ideal, but not necessary.
-
Cost. Budget is around 100,000, so cost shouldn't be the biggest concern.
-
Usefulness. I don't expect to use what I learn here at all. Just need a Bachelor's degree for working abroad, doing things like translating or teaching English.
I'm sure this post sounds super naive, and that reflects exactly where I am in life at the moment. So any advice would very appreciated. Let me know if I'm missing some key information or this is complete nonsense.
Thank you so much!

How do we defeat neoliberalism in education?
Education systems across the globe are under threat from the neoliberal agenda.
How do educators from Early Years schools to Higher Education fight back? Do we have ways to reshape education so that we can move away from the focus on producing workers for the knowledge economy? How do we flip the system to stop top down management and corporate structures in schools and universities? How do we reclaim the cultural and moral significance of education?
Feeling a little down at the moment about it all, happy to hear about any successful movements around this type of reform.

Raising a Multilingual Child
Hey guys, wondering if you are cross-culture parents, do you have any troubles including your native language and culture in your children's lives? And what are the methods and materials you're using to teach languages to your children?
One of my closest friends recently became a dad with a just 3-week old baby. While his excitement is palpable, he and his wife are also fixated on raising the baby with English, plus their native Spanish and Vietnamese, so the baby can communicate with their families. They settled on the one parent, one language method but good reading materials are scarce. Being trilingual ourselves, we are perplexed that not enough attention is being paid to toddlers—when it's proven they can soak in languages faster than we can.
I'm interested in hearing everyone's take on this.

A Student’s Perspective Over Defunding Charter Schools
I attend a charter school, and I could attest that charter schools are way better than public schools but are often misrepresented. The main difference between a public school and a charter school is the amount of parent involvement. Charter schools are mainly established, managed, and funded by parents. However, they are NOT private schools. Charter schools have to follow the same school district and state guidelines. In fact, charter schools are often underfunded. At my school district, the average pay for teachers of the public schools are $17k above the teachers at charter schools, the teachers who teach me! These teachers have a serious dedication to students because they work for a charter school, not a public school, despite earning A LOT less. Additionally, charter schools emphasize character, well-rounded education. Most public schools don’t emphasize the development of character or a individual based curriculum. There is so much more about charter schools! Charter schools not only are underfunded, but they also continue to help students. Education is a big factor for charter schools. As a low-income, minority, first generation student, I’ll tell you that charter schools serve students like me more diligently than public schools. Even by statistical factors, charter schools outrank many schools and many of these schools are filled with underrepresented students with not many resources to begin with. It completely irritates me when people say that charter schools are helping the rich and not the poor or are taking money away from public schools. This is completely untrue! Again and again, charter schools are excelling because they actually use their funds to help students. Of course some schools practice unethical behaviors, but I can certainly attest to the fact that charter schools are very underrepresented and sad. I am a low-income, minority, and first generation student. Through my time at Peak to Peak Charter School, I have graduated with a 4.0 GPA while taking AP classes and doing clubs. I have great relationships with teachers who really value education yet earn less money. This may be frustrating, but they are more dedicated about changing lives than getting money. It’s truly inspirational to see them spread character and be passionate about education not for the materialistic gains. Furthermore, my school was established in 2000 and now ranks #1 or in the top 3 in Colorado for many years. My school accomplished many things such as graduating 100% of the seniors where many among them are disadvantaged or underrepresented. This school also sends students to amazing colleges and prepare students well for success (the test scores are way higher than the district and state). This is my school that I’m so glad to be a part of. It truly saddens me that my charter school is currently being defunded by my school district. The fact that I, as a student, am so powerless to fight against the effects of misinformation and greed. I extend this story to you all. I will be willing to offer more information if you would like. However, please advocate for charter schools. Please understand and even research it for yourself to see that charter schools have provided so much for students and made a change in their lives. This is not about money. It is about the investment towards the future. It is about fighting greed and misinformation because the future is depending upon the students. Hear the stories of the students! Listen and stand up for them!

Boarding School for middle schooler with low marks
Hi all - I'm a bit at my wits end as I've grown increasingly concerned for my younger sibling. They're brilliant and comes from an ivy family but has exceptionally low marks due to serious family dysfunction and basically aces his test and just doesn't turn in any of his homework.
My father is unequipped to parent due to his work schedule and we are attempting to send them off to boarding school as with our circumstance it is our best option.
Issue is they're in year 7 of middle school and recieved D's, C's and maybe like 1 B on their report card. This makes the top 10 (Exeter, Deerfield etc.) out of the question. When I was living under my family's roof I too received low marks but as soon as I left academics flourished.
Basically, he doesn't fit the rehabilitation/theraputic boarding schools and has the aptitude for Kent or even Deerfield, but atm doesn't have the marks for it.
Please let me know if you know of any schools that would accept a student with low marks and isn't comprised of suicidal or drug addicted tweens/teens. East coast, west coast etc - as long as the school is good. I was thinking east coast so I could keep an eye on him and check in...
Thank you so much.

How do I get a copy of my IEP from high school?
I was in special ed for emotional disturbance and I dropped out in 2014. Now I’m applying for a program that can help me pay my college tuition, but it’s for severely disadvantaged students and apparently my income isn’t low enough anymore. The only way I can get in is if I have my IEP. I went to two different alternative special ed schools, would they still have it after more than 4 years? Should I contact the alternative schools or my normal high school? I’d be way too embarrassed to go back to my normal high school so I hope that isn’t the case.

At the same time, Washington University in Saint Louis is offering me a full ride to study linguistics (yes, I was surprised too).. The future of education.
Gaming is a significant market for VR, but gamers are the beta testers and early adopters of VR tech. With their feedback, VR technology is improved. The take-up by the general population for education will dwarf the niche market of gamers asnd cause panic in conventional academia.
Consider: The curriculum and education will improve to such an extent and VR excursions will be so interesting, that it will trump VR porn (the student can do that anytime). The initial thrust will be for high fidelity audio and video which will involve what appears to be a robust set of spectacles rather than the brick things you wear on your face currently (bendable screens on wraparound VR specs?) together with the software and hardware to enable it Imagine a VR school. It doesn’t even need to physically exist as it’s in cyberspace (that abstract place where you meet someone you’re phoning) A student (anywhere in the country) registers for the courses they wish to take. The cost to the student for the VR equipment shouldn’t be more than the cost of a year’s worth of tuition, and it’s a one-time cost. This is applicable to basic and tertiary education. The student’s construct their avatar, select their username and get it approved by the school. The school sells the student the necessary interface and biometric gear adequate for school issues (biometric gear is to verify identities and suchlike for exams etc). This is a once-off cost to the student (it lasts their whole school career) and won’t be much more expensive than the text books. The student manifests each day at school, goes on virtual field trips anywhere in the world with their class and teacher. There are virtual blackboards, laboratories’ (chemistry, physics and IT). Dangerous or expensive experiments can be carried out in simulated laboratories with simulated chemicals (there’s no risk). There are huge spaces for debate (modelled on the Greek Athenian forum?) etc. Power is restored to the teacher. Teachers can just mute or eject troublesome avatars (discipline will improve). If a student feels they are been treated unfairly, they can appeal and a recording of the class session can be reviewed. Three strikes against you and you are expelled. A higher appeal is available, but it will take a single adverse judgement and you’re expelled.
In basic education it will be peer pressure that pushes education. What if you hear friends talking about the technology of ancient Egypt and these amazing pyramids in Giza? Or that cute girl getting all romantic with guys who can talk about the Taj Mahal? And your only contribution is “duh”. If you can learn at your own pace, at your convenience, anywhere in the world and anything you want in VR, why not? Maybe education would be seen to be ‘cool’. It would really help with long distance relationships as well. Meet up in VR for a moonlight walk in Central Park (without the dog turds and muggers)? A VR candle lit meal outside the Taj Mahal? Breakfast on top of the great pyramid of Giza?
Augmented Reality (AR) as well. I was charmed by the scenario I read in a sci-fi book (I don’t recall its title). The population had these zooty, comfortable VR/AR specs. They would cruise down the street (shopping or something) with their specs in AR mode (VR polarization off so they were transparent). Solid things were there but a fire hydrant would be transformed into an AR fountain. You would tailor the AR theme to your preferences. All shop windows (for eg) could be drawn from the Harry Potter mythology. Passers-by could be witches and wizards. Dragons would flap their way around. If you needed to see external reality, you just looked under the specs or took them off. It sounded quite cool.

Looking for directions
Hi all, newbie here. Like the title says, I'm looking for any suggestions, sites to visit, subreddits, resources, etc. to research on study opportunities abroad (master's degree).
So a bit about myself. I've just completed my bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering and will be completing 1 year of work as a Solar Engineer. I live in a third world country and with all the corruption thats going on here, the future here seems bleak. So while I am still financially stable, I am really trying to apply for a masters somewhere abroad. For now I have set my sights on Canada and Australia, but I'm open to suggestions. I am just starting my process of researching living conditions in those countries, so if anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great. Also, where should I look into to know more about the scholarships available?
Well thanks for taking the time to read this. Have a good day.

Question about discrimination
Hello r/education I have a quick question regarding a situation regarding a graduate school I am familiar with, and I was hoping to get some insight.
The Graduate School in question has many upper level defense and national security personnel acting as faculty, however the school is a non-profit, open institution eligible to anyone who applies and is accepted (including international students).
I'm hearing that a student from the Middle East (I believe from Iran), may be denied entry to the school because certain members of the faculty have a problem teaching subjects pertaining to national security to citizens of countries the USA does not have a good relationship with.
However, this student is already studying in the states on a F-1 Visa, and according to the government should be allowed to study wherever he chooses and gets accepted too. Mind you, this institution is public, not private, and the faculty member in question is only upset because he claims his security clearance won't allow him to work with this type of student.
Any thoughts?

Why do schools issue bonds instead of borrow from a bank?
I realize the most basic answer is to avoid paying interest until some future point in time.
My second question connected with this is:
Once a school district issue a 20 year bond, do they start putting aside money each month / year to pay that bond off?
And my final question is, if the answer to above question is no, do they plan on just issuing another bond in 20 years with this one is up?
It seems to me like the entire educational funding is a Ponzi scheme, especially when an online school could be built by a state for the cost of what one district spends on school buses.
These buildings worth tens of millions of dollars of prime real estate could be sold, parents that want tutors or baby sitters can hire their own, and this could would save trillions of dollars.
Just think of all the unnecessary jobs that would be eliminated: Teachers, bus drivers, security guards, cafeteria workers, school police.
Traffic would be so much better without all the soccer moms blocking traffic picking up their kids. Gas would be cheaper from less usage.
OPEC would get less money.
The environment would be better.
No mass school shootings would be possible.
Parasites that get rich off the school system and retire after 20 years would have to get real jobs.
Why do we not have 21st century approaches like these to education, instead of what we have now?
And if you find this post offensive, you are the problem.

Looking for information/experiences with Maple Bear Schools
Forgive me if this post doesn't belong here, but I am looking into teaching at a Maple Bear School location and was wondering if anyone here has any direct experience or knowledge of working conditions and management.
I'm a new teacher and this is a chance to teach abroad for me. But it is a big move and I'd like to hear input from other professionals.

Serial education drop-out looking for some advice from an educators perspective...
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a bit of advice from an educators perspective.
Now I've written all of this out, I just want to come back to say I expect some unfavourable judgement here... And pressing 'post' is actually a bit nerve-wracking. But I'm asking for advice as I'm trying to stop myself from making the same mistake again. For the 6th time.
There's a bit of a back-story so you can get the full picture...
Growing up I enjoyed school until I got to around 15 years old. I did reasonably well and was always in the top classes. At home I didn't get any support but that's fine, a lot of students don't and they still do well.
I'd say probably the last 2 years of school, for my GCSE's, I didn't really turn up. I was definitely out of school more than I was in it. My mum was constantly threatened with prosecution but it never went anywhere, and they couldn't *force* me to stay there so I just kept leaving. I didn't see any kind of future for myself so working towards one seemed like a waste of time.
All sorts happened between leaving school and 5 years later getting into a job in a call centre where I realised that I was capable of more than what I was doing.
I started studying part-time towards a law degree (degree attempt 1). I enjoyed it a lot for the first 2 or so years, and then I saw an opportunity to move out of my parents house by studying full time. So I went to study law full time (degree attempt 2), living in student halls, at a much older age than everyone else I was around. I hated it, it drove me crazy that I had to start again at the beginning of a degree I'd already completed a year of. Big mistake going full-time in the first place. But at the time getting out of my parents house was the priority. I ended up switching to study philosophy (degree attempt 3). Big mistake. And then I dropped out after 4 months.
I fell into a temp job in an office, where I learned how to use Excel, and then got interested in maths and as I was constantly dealing with stats about vehicles, engineering. So I started studying engineering (degree attempt 4) part-time. The part of my family that I admire the most are all engineers, too. So that was a factor. In my job I progressed very quickly, and ended up being hired by the client of the contract I worked on in that temp job. I had to move to the other end of the country for that job, and it wasn't right for me, and I ended up dropping my studies, quitting the job and moving back home.
I got another temp job, and then found (what I thought was permanent work) with another company. Once I felt a bit more settled again, I decided to go back to the part-time engineering course (degree attempt 5). I wasn't very successful in the job I was doing and travelled a lot, and ended up dropping the engineering just before my first end of module exam. Despite having done really well up to then.
So now I'm a year or so away from having dropped out of a degree... My "I'm capable of more than this" senses are tingling and I'm thinking about going back to study law part-time. I miss it. I can honestly say it changed who I am as a person, for what I see as better, and I think I could eventually use it to make a positive difference in the world, no matter how small it may appear to be. Whenever I've thought about it after dropping out of full-time higher education, I've said to myself "it's too late", but it's not. I guess also seeing everyone I started studying law with now qualifying and moving on to the next stages, it's coming back again.
So my questions, really, are is this crazy? Should I just accept that education isn't for me? After all my failed attempts, what quality, motivation or change should I look to see in myself before committing to another course?
The scariest thing for me, is that the Open Uni (who I've dropped out of 3 degrees with...) have told me I'm at a 'restricted' status, and would need to speak with an 'educational advisor' before being allowed to register for another course - and I get it, I'm not blind, on the face of things it absolutely looks like a bad idea. Maybe it is even just a bad idea. So maybe I can't, and maybe that's right, or if I can, is that my absolute, final, never-again last-last-last chance?
Have any of you had students who should have been capable but for some reason just constantly got in their own way? What advice would you give them, or gave them and just really wish they truly heard? What's a good reason to get back into education?
I don't want to talk to my friends or family about this because they'll just smile and nod, sigh and roll their eyes. Which is valid... But not very helpful.
So any advice would be really welcome (and please don't be too hard on me.)
