Hey there!
A group of my friends and I attend high school in California. We're passionate about all kinds of writing, and a couple of us are already editors for student magazines and newspapers where we enjoy reading literature and revising student submissions. Our school even has a club where upperclassmen who are proficient in writing donate their lunch hour to help underclassmen with their essays (peer editing/advice). However, we wanted to expand this service past just our high school and make it a free nationwide service.
This would take the form of a website with a Google form embedded in it. Students would send in their essays as a Google document and the editors behind the website would comment suggestions. Finally, the revised essay would be sent back to the student. Therefore, any student with access to Internet and Google Drive would be able to utilize the service.
Almost all English classrooms employ some form of peer editing while writing essays, but this means that students can only access the opinions of people their age. By marketing this service to those in the 6-9th grades, students can gain the second opinion of someone older and more experienced without having to bother their brother or sister or pay someone (we actually enjoy editing)!
We plan to spread this service by not only posting on different social medias but also to contact schools directly to have them introduce this service to students in their English classes. We also hope to especially focus on underprivileged schools, as their current resources are even more limited.
The website hasn't been fully developed yet, but we really wanted to reach out and hear the opinions of the teaching and education community. For those directly involved in teaching: Would you guys be interested in introducing such a service to your students? Why or why not? Is there anything you would like to see, or anything you don't like about this idea?
For high schoolers: Would you be interested in helping us with this program?
And for parents and younger students: Is this a service you would use?
Thank you so much! We look forward to hearing from ya'll.
