Education Dept. to Cut Off Federal Funding for Some Rural Schools

According to an article in the New York Times, federal funding for rural schools is set to be cut because of a change in policy regarding data used for qualifying. The letter of the law, dating back to 2002, says that census data should determine which rural schools qualify. In the meantime, the Department of Education was accepting data related to the number of students on subsidized lunches instead, because it provides more accurate data. The Department of Education reversed course now, and has said they want to use the census data exclusively. It will cut close to half the schools which receive this funding.
