Until there is a safe vaccine, or at the very least a safe medication for covid-19, these are places where social distancing is not possible once school resumes for next school year: 1. school bus 2. classrooms/ gym (30 to over 50 students) 3. hallways (hundreds/thousands between passing periods multiple times a day in middle school & high school) 4. assembly (hundreds to thousands) 5. after school clubs & sports 6. cafeteria (anywhere from 300 to 1,000 students between 1 to 3 lunches per day) 7. fire drills 8. School trips 9. Staff meetings (anywhere from 30 to 200 staff members depending on schools size) 10. Recess 11. Working with students up-close, especially special needs students 12. Basically, the ENTIRE school day
Aside from schools not having the space or logistics for social distance, good luck getting hundreds & thousands of kids to social distance from one another, or enforce wearing face masks!
I don’t know what a viable and sustainable solution would look like, but being in school is NOT like taking a trip to the grocery store for 2 hours once a week. School is 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. It will be a similar impact as what’s happening in nursing homes across the country, or what was happening on the cruise ships. Mass infection from staff and students who are asymptomatic and symptomatic, giving it to each other in a place they spend a lot of time at, and bringing it into the rest of the community.
