ideas for a new school schedule
It seems to me the current public school calendar is a bit archaic. I'd like to propose a change that I think would relax teachers and students, and increase performance. I'd also ask you to critique me and make your own suggestions.
Make the school year consist of three semesters. The Spring Semester would begin the second week of January and end the first week of May. Students would then get two weeks vacation and return to school on the third week of May. Summer Semester would end the last day of July and then get two weeks vacation. Classes would resume the second week of August, ending on the first week of December followed by a one month vacation.
3-4 classes per day (3 in the summer, 4 otherwise) 1 hour per class (4 hour in class time) 45 minutes of study time between classes (3 hours study time) 1 hour lunch/socialization period.
The study time would be a period where students sit in a classroom or possibly a library and work on their assignments, with an instructor or two nearby to answer questions when the student hits a roadblock.
I feel that this would give students enough time to engage with the teacher in a lecture setting, with their instructors in a one-on-one fashion during study time, and give them a respectable chunk of time to socialize and stuff their faces. I think that this would show a sizeable increase in test scores and provide ample time to cover all the materials that should be covered.
I'm not an expert by any means, but if I was back in high school or even middle school and had a schedule like this, I could see myself enjoying school and learning a lot more.

Giftedness
Do you think that a large majority of people can be considered as a gifted student in some way?
My logic for this is the idea that most if not all people are good at something. One person may be gifted in politics, another in cooking, another in P.E.
So could you make the comment that everyone is gifted in some respect? It seems to me when we talk about giftedness, we are only considering it in an intellectual sense, which I deem inappropriate, as there are subjects in school that aren't heavily intellectual such as food tech.
I'm thinking that a gifted individual would be gifted in a certain area or areas, and not others.
For example you could say Albert Einstein was a gifted physicist and mathematician, but not gifted in English literature.
I think part of my point is that I'm asking if this is how we should categorise giftedness, as in, it makes it redundant to consider a student as gifted overall, instead we should be considering if they are gifted in an a subject area (or maybe several).

LITERATURE CIRCULAR
I am Junior in the New Jersey public school system. Throughout my 3 years of high school, and even my memories of middle school, I can not recall reading a single fantasy genre book/series. I am not saying this because all I do is read fantasy books in my free time and feel everyone should love fantasy books - actually quite the contrary: 3 sport varsity athlete - Sure I've read every Harry Potter book 3 times, I've read the first two Kingkiller Chronicle books 3 times while eagerly awaiting book 3, and read countless others. I share this not to show my opinion on fantasy but to back up my claim; the fantasy genre improves a kids literary analysis and imagination more so then the writings of Robert Frost and Ralph Emerson. These books promote imagination, forcing kids to picture epic battles and have their own opinions on deceivingly complex characters/plots. Just wondering if anyone agrees with or is strongly against my ideology here? Thanks!

Why don't school districts allocate funds to schools according to how many students attend instead of unequal by performance(typically benefits more Affluent areas)?
I know a little bit of how funds are currently allocated just was thinking a strict policy of funding schools by population could boost schools in low income areas. Its seems to decrease necessary funding of schools that fail reguraly in lower income neighborhoods because they are largely composed of a population that may not prioritize education because of poverty. Unlike in richer areas that constantly have more educated and affluent population schools that get a's and b's and get better funding. Wouldn't this require administrators to be held accountable instead of making test a large factor in public school funding.
If I'm ignorant just let me know was just currious.

should I study law?
architecture or law? In architeture, despite all the negative things I´ve read about the profession, you get to combine your creative side with math. I imagine it to be playful like when you draw in kindergarten.
I also consider law. I know, it´s something completely different. But I can imagine a possibilty of being creative in that profession as well. But I can´t describe what that creativity would be.
As you see I do not have a realistic view on these professions, so I turn to reddit and hopefully someone a lot older than me(and not a career counselor..) can share some truths and dismantle some myhts? Much obliged

Help me understand the concept of magnet schools?
Hey all!
I work with a small non-profit organization that subsidizes team sport / PE programs in underfunded schools -- primarily public. That said, the exact definition of "public" within the NYC school system is a bit confusing to me.
I have a decent grasp of the relationship between / politics of public and charter schools in this city, but where exactly do magnet schools fall along that gradient? Under the umbrella of, or independent of the public system? And do pro-public or anti-charter groups regard them as being similarly harmful to the public system?
Thanks! :)

I'm writing an analysis about Teach for America and one of the things I'm supposed to cover are the "threats" to the program. Basically, external things that could harm Teach for America or it's mission. I don't even know what to begin looking into because I can't figure out what would qualify as a "threat" to a program like Teach for America and I was hoping someone who knew more about the program could point me in the right direction.

How Can School Be Improved?
How can school, specifically homework, be improved? Limiting homework time doesn't work because students would not fully utilize that time as a cop-out. Possibly restricting number of assignments and telling teachers to go easy on the length, but that won't ever fully work. I ask as I am lost for ideas, and am wondering about this. I am a current high school sophomore (yea, I know its gonna get worse in upper years) and I'm taking the most challenging classes my school has to offer- and my school has some pretty darn hard classes and always has the top 15 people going to Harvard, MIT, Princeteon, Stanford, Yale etc-so its not a joke school. I can work on school undistracted (I think because of my childhood?), as in, I can sit down and only focus on school, so don't think my times are enlarged due to distractions. I really don't think homework should go away, I think it is very important and I also generally support school (I don't sit there saying "When are we ever gonna use this"), but sometimes its out of hand. 3 weeks ago, I had more than 5 hours of homework for 5 consecutive days- now obviously that isn't normal, but when I put in just over 70 hours that week on school-something needs to change. Any ideas? How to limit, make more effective, or effectively reduce homework while still completely keeping it?

How to overcome lack of attention?
I'm not a formal teacher, but I help with private classes for some people. I have a particular student of young age, to whom I teach Portuguese, whose biggest difficulty is not the grammar per se, but to understand what the questions ask of him. At all subjects.
I've pinpointed the he reads mechanically and, in turn, selects only a few words and tries to figure out what the question wants from there. He fails at that almost ever.
Are there any pedagogical articles or exercises I could work with him?

K-12 Teachers - What should you control?
For the best outcomes for your students, what elements of the profession should be in the teacher's purview (not the school, government, or parents)? It seems like your professiom has been chipped down to Facilitator.

Our next Secretary of Education has never set foot in a public school and has no background in education. What will this mean for those of us in the trenches?
It looks like Trump has picked Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education. DeVos is privately educated and has spent her career in business and politics and has no background in education. As a young public school teacher I am terrified. Whenever I see people with "business" backgrounds put in charge of public education (district, state, or national level) - it seems that all they do is make life worse for students and teachers alike. I was a K-12 student during the Bush years but I remember my teachers worrying about their futures then. Am I right to be worried now?

Looking for an image from a news article I recently saw on Reddit
I'm looking for an image I saw in a recent article from the anti-Trump protests that said something like "The literal KKK is literally having a postage, literally" . Hello is greatly appreciated. I think the article might've from the Washington Post, LA times, or another newspaper-looking website.
I'd like to use this image in an upcoming class of mine, which is why I turn to you wonderful folks. Thanks in advance!

Preparing for a phone interview-have a quick question!
Hi all, I am preparing for my first ever educator phone interview (super nervous but excited) and have a quick question. One of the sample questions provided asked, "what are some of the challenges you anticipate you'll face when working with a group of students whose backgrounds do not match your own?" My biggest challenge I anticipate facing is a language barrier. I know the school district has translators available, but for example in my student teaching internship we had a student whose parents only spoke Mongolian and we did not have a Mongolian translator. In situations like this, what is the best action to take? For parent/teacher conferences I won't have anyone to communicate with, what do I do in this situation? Thank you!

Can one attend uni-classes or college-classes (math/physics) in germany while still in high school ? Or anything ?
So can one attend some higher level of math/physics so i dont have to waste my time in school on those subjects. I tried to find something but coudn't I could , only found foreign languages/politics/history as extra but no math/physics.So they should be in college/uni right ? I am alsmot 17 but in 10 grade because my german knowledge isn't that good (5 months in germany)(and didn't finish the end of the year in my home). But good enough if we arent discussing novels and such stuff. I thought of that because I read somewhere that it is possible to attend uni/college (no idea of the difference) classes while in school. Currently in Hannover. I am willing to pay , but not too much. I though about posting in /r/germany but decided to post here first.

How can i get better grades?
Hey guys.
So i have a question for you guys the question is about grades and school.
From 5th to 9th grade i was a straight A student.Everything fine, getting grades with no effort and i was studying,
But my depression got worse and in 10 th grade (started 2 months ago) i just got so depressed and now i am sitting at D's and Fs.Thats bad.I want to get better grades.I want to learn everything.I want to pass my class and just get out of this hell called school,i want to give my best and have Bs and As.
I am having troouble at everything...Chemistry,Physics,maths,philosophy,biology...
How can i get better grades? How much should I study a day?
And my main question is how should I study? I dont know what studying method to use to have better grades to learn effectively.
Also how can i balance gaming and studying?
Or should I just quit gaming?
School is the most important thing for me and honestly i am ready to give up everything to get straight A's
