Looking into an undergraduate degree. Unfortunately, they do not accept federal aid of any sort. With that said, I'd need to get a student loan from say Sallie Mae or another source. ( $9000 for the program )
I applied once with a co signer - denied
Scratching my head looking for a solution. Any suggestions ? Please help.

FERPA
Hello there,
Hopefully this is the correct place to discuss something like this, if not please redirect me.
I'm an 18 year old high school senior in the Cincinnati Public Schools district and I've been researching FERPA. I believe CPS receives funding from the national government and thus falls under FERPA regulations (please correct me if I'm wrong)
Based on my knowledge of FERPA I know that I am an "eligible student" having turned 18 years old, and the "educational records" that I believe have been disclosed to a "third party" (my peers) are my semester grades.
I was in a calculus last semester and ended up failing. It's the first high school class I have ever come close to failing and I decided to drop out of it in the second semester.
Some of my classmates that have since talked to me knew I had failed, and I hadn't told them. As it turns out my teacher had made a joke when an equation including the variable "F" was used by saying "just like [fill in my name]'s grade."
He once said to me "everyone has the right to fail" but I believe that I also have the right to fail without educational records being used for humor at my own expense. There's no doubt if I had put in the necessary time and effort I would have been able to pass. He's not a bad teacher when it comes to actual content. I deserved to fail and it's on me, I just don't think he's right to tell my class.
I even know that a student in another class was failing last semester because my friends told me after hearing a specific percentage grade that the teacher revealed to his class (trying to humiliate him so he does better or something like that)
He also leaves graded tests on a desk in a pile for students to collect as they come in. In a perfect world everyone goes straight for their test and doesn't look at everyone else's but let's be honest the whole class knows who is succeeding and who isn't.
It seems like this teacher is taking things too far and needs to respect his students and the law.
Am I completely out of line? Should I do anything about this? Any feedback is appreciated.

Devos confirmation goes to senate vote
Regardless of party affiliation, Devos, who is from my hometown, is absolutely unfit to lead the department of education. I was really hoping she would be voted down by the HELP committee, but, seeing as that didn't happen, is there anything we can do to block her confirmation? I'm feeling so helpless about everything that's going on right now :/

I'm looking for VR applications in the language learning classroom.
I've seen a few implementations of Google cardboard that look great. One example was to take a 360 picture of your room or house and give classmates a virtual tour using sound recording.
However, I'm looking for any programs that might be even more immersive. With the leaps and bounds with the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive - I feel like language teachers are getting very close to being able to create real, meaningful context for our learners. I think that, for my students at least, this is a major barrier to "buying in" to the language learning environment.
Has anyone heard of, seen, or read about new VR applications that we should keep an eye on or, better yet, be using in the classroom?

A new, bipartisan approach to education.
Since our education system is getting worse, public education is getting defunded, Betsy DeVos is in charge of it, and Trump is the president, I propose what I call the Palestinian Shift: We propose to give the republicans what they want and defund public education 100%. This will force the charter school system to absorb every poor kid in the United States. One of two things will happen. Either it will turn out that we on the left were wrong all along, and that private education is much more efficient and cuts out all the bureaucracy and waste.. or it will collapse and we never have to hear about charter schools and defunding public education ever again. Win/Win! What do you think?

What are my options?
I am, currently, half way through my Respiratory Care program. I plan to eventually become a Physician's Assistant. I was discussing with a classmate that if I took a few extra classes after graduation, I could earn four more associate degrees in a year's time
The degrees are: Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry. I have almost half of the required credits for each degree and many classes I will have to take are shared between each degree's requirements.
Also, there is a wonderful university nearby that accepts all credits from my college. So, transferring is not an issue.
My questions are: Should I do pursue this? What can I do with these degrees?

A targeted approach to opposing Betsy DeVos
I've identified some Republican senators who may be most likely to do the reasonable thing and reject DeVos (we need three to win). Here are the phone numbers for their local offices. If you're calling after hours, you may have multiple options - leave a message in every inbox! This is a great opportunity to get through to some senators whose DC offices are getting swamped, and it will bring more attention to us if we hit staffers who don't normally handle as many calls.
"Hi, my name is __, and I'm calling to urge senator __ to reject Betsy DeVos."
(You can add more, but most offices just make a tally.)

A fresh start
Our understanding of the world is changing all the time. Therefore education should be changing all the time.
What I think I see is instead of education being replaced... I see further layers of knowledge being added on like an onion.
It is easier to avoid challenging the status quo and to simply bolt on new knowledge.
The example that comes to mind is in science: As scientific understanding progresses it is common to hear a history of how we came to this point. The story gets longer and longer until at some point, presumably, the oldest knowledge drops off.
Thinking about a flat earth just isn't relevant anymore. Thinking about classical physics.... Actually holds back our understanding.
What I'm basically saying is: out with the old and in with the new.
Anyway. Where can a truely fresh start be made in this world? Is there anywhere free of curriculum?
I'm really curious to know what fresh thinkers of our time can come up with unencumbered with out of date ideas and thinking fully on up to date understanding: -Quantum physics without classics -knowledge of maths but not language

Can you stop kids from playing with fire?
Can you stop kids from playing with fire?
We need your help spreading the word, educating and sharing with kids basic fire safety rules.
Children under 5 are twice as likely to get hurt or die in a fire. Teaching them fire safety is critical. The topic can be confusing and scary for them, but our book does an excellent job of helping to educate them while making it fun. The book bundle is a brilliant way to start the conversation or reinforce what you are already showing them about fire prevention. It strikes the right balance between story and a fire safety lesson.
Help us spread kids education and priceless fire prevention!

Hi all,
First off, I want to say that I'm not looking to step on anybody's toes. I am in no way a education professional, so if my ideas are ignorant and off-base then by all means set me straight. I am however, an american citizen with an interest in seeing our population well educated (as a defense against tyranny and an investment in the future). I firmly believe that since we entrust them the minds of our children deserve the highest respect and to be well compensated.
That being said, I see several problems with the incentives for teachers to remain as in the profession. 1) The job is too difficult and emotionally taxing for the amount of compensation offered. 2) Good teachers are paid equivalently to poor ones. 3) There is no upside to working in challenging schools other than the non-tangible rewards of making a larger impact on the kids that really need it.
My proposal is this: 1) Offer teachers bonuses for exceptional performance using some appropriate metric. I know teacher performance ratings is a hot topic, but I'm not looking to push people out, only recognize and reward professional excellence. And I'm not talking some lame $500 check at the end of the year, I'm purposing a tiered percentage increase in base pay for the top 25%, 10%, 5%, and 1% on the order of 1.2x, 1.5x, 1.8x, and 2.0x.
2) Using the existing metrics that identify troubled schools (low income neighborhoods, high drop-out rates, poor outcomes, poor college follow-ons, etc), and year-by-year offer again, percentage increases in income to teachers to come teacher there (2x, 3x, 4x etc). Coupled with the previous pay changes, this would encourage good teachers to move to hard schools so they would make the greatest difference.
3) Centralize inter-school assignment at the federal level for the public schools. Take into consideration teacher's location desires, but also the requirements of the various school districts. This would give teachers and administrators the visibility on where the needs and opportunities are located. This obviously means that moving needs to be a simple and efficient process with compensation for moves that are in the best interest of the department of education.
Thoughts?
Again, not an educator, just a citizen who wants our education system to work for everyone and see teachers paid like they deserve.

Why my admin can never bother me about kids earning Fs ever again.
I gave my seniors a sample community college entrance exam. This exam is used for their career pathways (trades) as well.
The seniors (across other classes) scored between 30% and 60%. 85% is passing.
Data shows 40% of kids are ready for college.
So if a kid earns an F, I'm just reporting the facts backed by data.
If we pass them along, we're giving them a thumbs up when the are really behind.

Parent who uses a bike on the playground for mobility- is this against any policy?
A friend of mine has 2 boys who attend a UK Primary School. Essentially, she has very little mobility in her legs and cannot walk/stand for very long. To avoid the cost associated with a mobility scooter, she rides a bike with her sons to school, and as a result rides her bike across the playground in the morning when she drops them off (she is also always early to avoid busy time). As a result of this, a parent has repeatedly complained to the school, and she is getting worried that the school will prohibit her riding her bike, thus unable to drop off her kids.
My question is simply, can they? I know that they can restrict children's bike riding, but can they do that to a parent too?
Thanks to anyone who can help.

What do you think a class should have to be considered a 21st century class?
Hello. I just enter to a new school and classes are quite old and I want to suggest them to add some things. They seems to want to be up to date but having some quite old teachers and not. Much idea about new technologies does not help.
I'm 24 years old and recently graduated. I'm also good with technologies and want to help them.
For example, I think that a computer with projector it's really important. But an interactive whiteboard isn't.
There should be good speakers. The possibility of making the room quite dark. Somewhere to connect all the devices to charge. Good WiFi or Internet connection.
I think that's kind of the basic but I would like to hear opinions and more ideas from you.

Japan vs America
I went to school in America. My knowledge of Japanese schools is from the massive amount of pop culture media that is about schools and a some years I was working over there.
So in the America. Students rotate classrooms and the teacher stays put. The classroom is basically the teacher's office also. If a student has a homeroom at his or her school. They might only ever be at homeroom a few times a year. Schools have a cafeteria the students have to use. All the students and teachers are quickly rotated through the cafeteria during a few lunch periods. students don't do any cleaning, unless they really trash the place the teacher makes them as punishment. Uniforms at public schools are rare, though dress codes are more likely. large fleets of school buses, almost no walkers or bikers, student's driving them selves, and lots of parents' cars. massive schools with 1000 or more students, covering huge areas.
In Japan the teachers rotate classrooms and the students stay put in their homeroom. Teachers have a desk in a large office with all the other teachers. The students' homeroom teacher will also be teaching them a subject the entire school year. only specialized classes like gym have the students out of their homeroom. students eat lunch in their classroom. sometimes students have to help prepare the meal. students clean their homeroom after lunch and at the end of the day. uniforms are very likely, especially in high and middle school grades. no school buses unless kindergarten or preschool. students walk, bike, public transit, or parents to school. student pop in the lower hundreds, smaller schools, more schools, covering a smaller area, and sometimes students don't live anywhere near the school.
now which do think is better? maybe you just prefer some features of both?

There seems to be this idea that schools were better in the old days, kids were smarter in the old days, and the proof is because of the moon landing
I have become used to reading this reasoning on the internet, but I have now heard in person, from a teacher.
Lines in some variation of this: 'Schools were doing everything better, and we even landed on the moon.'
When I heard it in person, it was a bit astonishing. So, I am going to ask you all here. How much validity is in this?

Any ideas how to differentiate inductive vs deductive reasoning?
Hi Guys! Hows everyone doing?
So I have a quick question regarding the difference between Inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning...I'm taking a psychology class(last year!) and it is getting to me. What are some simple solutions to differentiate this in a scenario? I appreciate anyone who is willing to help :). Thank you very much!
My basic understanding is that inductive reasoning is based off of individual observation?
While deductive reasoning is more relying on a more hypothetical approach and predictions. But this is where I guess I get confused by ><.

URGENT: just found out I am short 1 credit and have no idea what to do
I have been enrolling in a Sports Management program at at Brock University for the past 3 1/2 years and as I enter my last semester I find out today that I won't be graduating because of something small I missed in the fine print. What I missed was that you cannot take more than 8 first year courses in the whole time span that I attend this school. Well as of this point I have taken 9 (For a total of 9 credits) first year courses, all paid for and passed successfully but 1 of those credits won't count. Now the only thing I can think of is that I will have to miss graduation in June 2018 with all my colleagues and good friends in order to gain that 1 credit in the summer. It's extremely frustrating because when signing up for these programs online it didn't stop me from doing more first year courses than I was allowed, they just took my money and said nothing.
I have honestly never felt so low in my life, I feel like a failure to not graduate with my class. I am meeting with the school coordinator tomorrow but I am not sure how it will go.. Is there anyone out there that has ever had this problem?
TL;DR
Enrolled in too many first year courses, 1 credit from those courses doesn't count because I am over the limit by one course, won't be graduating with fellow colleagues and friends.

Creative Writing at university
Hello! I'm a year 11, currently in the middle of my mocks, and my English teacher has been suggesting that I should do creative writing at uni (specifically UAE). I love English and am planning to take both English Literature and English Language at A Level, then go on to do something English-related at uni, but I don't have any sense of what I want to do beyond that. Obviously it's far off for me, so I have plenty of time to consider it, but is an MA in Creative Writing worthwhile? I think writing would be a fulfilling job and my teacher (who's well-read and doesn't hesitate to tell my classmates that they're shit at writing) thinks I have an aptitude for it, but I'd love to get a really rich education at university, and creative writing courses don't seem to offer that. An outside opinion would be much appreciated :)

eBac, do I need it?
Hey so I'm in y9 and will be choosing my options this year, and I've come to this so far, : (along with core subjects) Triple science, DT, Buisness and Computer Science. I would like to pursue a career in computer hardware engineering. However my school is encouraging student to take eBac saying that it would help me get into uni's, however it would require me to take French and Geography instead of Dt and Buisness, I'm god awful at French and geography is just plain boring. So how important is eBac in general for uni and also more specifically for my career of choice? Any help appreciated. Thanks
