Richard Branson asks: What do you wish kids were learning in school?
Hi,
I'm involved in an initiative with Richard Branson and Virgin Unite that involves reimagining education through experiential learning and other pedagogies. In regards to this, Virgin Unite is collecting responses to the titular question, "What do you wish kids were learning in school?" Clearly our educational system and many others are flawed, and Richard is trying to figure out ways to challenge this.
Given the large amount of educators or education reformers in this subreddit, I wanted to gauge opinions here. Richard and others will be reviewing the answers next weekend at a Virgin Unite gathering. Here's a little more info: http://ift.tt/2m4Bu41
Thanks for any feedback you can provide. I'm really looking forward to reviewing them.

My teacher can't teach!
When I was in sixth grade, I got 90+ marks. Now I'm getting 70s in grade 7. I am studying EXTREMELY hard because my parents force me to, and im still getting average grades.
Last year, my teacher was great. She taught in every way and made SURE everybody understood her when she was explaining.
This year, the teacher just explains the VERY BASIC idea and doesn't bother going into detail.
I'm not the only one with this problem. My friend since grade 4's mom told me that he has an IQ of 130, but he's getting F's.
So what do I do?

Looking for some inexpensive tables or other seating options
I'm a high-school math teacher looking for some options for alternative seating arrangements besides the normal student desks we have. I've been trying some blended/personalized learning units and would love to make the classroom look less like a traditional classroom.
Finding something that can be written on it with dry erase markers would be great, but isn't required as I could just surface the tables. Best I've found is like $40 for some 3x3ft tables, but was hoping to find more space or a better value. The PTO still has some money so trying to get that last minute grant in.
Thanks for any help you can provide!

Where can I find the actual study about kindergarteners and paper clips?
Ken Robinson talks about how kindergarteners are better at divergent thinking and about a study done in the 1960s showing that kids become less creative when answering "what you can do with a paperclip?" as they get older.
Here's a link to the youtube video of Robinson talking about this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzBa-frc2JA

Why must parents beg for teachers help
I have spent the past month literally begging my son's chemistry teacher to provide me with his missing assignments so that I can help my son. I still haven't received them.
Our district uses Canvas supposedly to allow teachers to share assignments and due dates with their students. Almost none of my children's teachers use it in this way. Assignments are only posted after the due date.
If you click an assignment there is no information on what the assignment actually is. I only get the unhelpful comment "No content."
I pulled my children into on-line math and English classes where they have done much much better simply due to the fact that we know what the assignments are at all times.
It has taken me over a month to get my son's Chemistry to get me the assignments to help him and I still haven't actually gotten them.
Why?
Why don't teachers make their assignments easily accessible to students and parents?

Interview tips
Hey y'all. This is my seventh year as a high school teacher. I'm looking to move districts for next school year, but haven't interviewed for a job since my first one for my current job. That interview was mostly the principal selling the school to me rather than the other way around.
I went to a job fair last year and felt pretty confident, but wanted to pick your brains for more formal interview tips, questions that might be asked, etc., since the districts I've applied to are more competitive than my current one.
Thanks in advance!

I went to juvenile hall today
I serve on a County Board of Education in California. One of the duties we are charged with is being the governing board for our alternative education (court and community school) programs. I've visited the closest alternative school a number of times to give awards and get tours, but was always curious about the juvenile hall programs and the probation camp programs. So, I asked our county's alternative education director for a tour. I took a half-day off work today to tour both the Juvenile Justice Center as well as the probation camp about 45 minutes away.
The Juvenile Justice Center is a new-ish facility that serves as both juvenile hall and juvenile court. Entering the facility is just like entering a federal building, in that you have to go through a metal detector and have your personal items pass through an x-ray machine before you can enter. I had to surrender my driver's license for a visitor's badge, as I did about a decade ago when I visited one of our state prisons as a journalist. At each checkpoint, we had to show the security cameras our visitor badges and someone in the control center let us through the various doors.
We visited two out of the four active boys classrooms, which comprise four out of seven in the facility's capacity. One of those seven is a girls' facility, with a very small attendance.
The thing that struck me the most about the detention facility's classrooms is how much they resembled school classrooms. Not only that, but how much they resembled normal classrooms. To me, as someone who has served as an educator, it was very hard to see these adolescent boys as criminals. There was a certain innocence to them that truly did not make me think "criminal." That's the sad thing about juvenile justice systems: the children in the system are the product of a flawed and troubled upbringing. Given the chance, removed from toxic surroundings, they probably would never be incarcerated at all.
Students answered questions for us about the lessons they were working on. There was an amazing enthusiasm to learn and share knowledge, moreso than I see in even an average alternative education classroom.
The classroom is lined with reinforced windows which lead to the dining quarters. The quarters are lined by jail cells, each with a small label of the child's face in black and white print. A plaque on the wall read "CHEMICAL AGENTS MAY BE DISBURSED WITHOUT WARNING IF IT IS BELIEVED THERE IS IMMINENT DANGER TO PEOPLE OR THE FACILITY." Let that sink in for a minute.
A familiar harrowing feeling came over me the same way it did in the maximum security CSP facility years ago.
We visited the County Office of Education workspace within the facility, which, aside from the armored door and buzz-in, buzz-out ingress and egress style, looked like a normal office. Drawings from students in poor English were all over the walls. The people who work in the System care about these kids, and it shows.
We got in our cars individually, and drove across the county to the probation camp facility, in a similarly peaceful and green part of the county. There were security cameras anywhere, but this time, there were no barbed wire fences. Do kids try to escape? Regularly. The Sheriff's dogs always find them, they said.
Students at the probation camp, on average, stay longer than those in Juvenile Hall. Their stays often range six to nine months. Half the day is spent in class -- again, a very normal looking room -- and the rest of the day is spent in either metal or woodworking class. Students make park benches and fire pits for county parks with a high level of craftsmanship. The fancy benches are also available to the public at a completely warranted premium price.
A hand-picked student was asked to give us a tour. He graduates from high school soon. He's learned woodworking, but wants to go home to be with his single mom and take care of his three younger siblings. This is a kid. I have no idea what he did to land him in the probation camp, but the thing I saw in him that stood out the most was a desire to be with family again and help out at home.
Students here, some dressed in brightly-colored jumpsuits, seemed a bit rougher around the edges than those in Juvenile Hall. I'm not sure why. Perhaps it was what they wore, and perhaps it was the sight of them standing around a lumber pile that reminded me of the California State Penitentiary inmates standing around a barren basketball court the recreation yard.
Every now and then, we would hear a probation officer's radio go off. Eventually, I heard them announce lunch was being served. We entered the living quarters, which were very much a camp-like, dormatory-resembling setting. Aside from the open showers and half-height toilet stalls, this could have been your average summer camp. The 20ish kids sat down at lunch, nearly one adult per table.
We were invited to eat lunch, and were served salad, rice and vegetables, and stewed beef. These kids eat well here. So did we, today.
What prompts me to share this is a combination of two things: a lack of overall exposure to the System, the things today's visit evoked in me today, and a desire for others to not write off "bad" students as such. You don't know what they went through. They may have been convicted of something, but you don't know what, and you don't know what lead to it. It's so easy, especially in today's climate, to make "us versus them" judgments. In doing that, you ignore the simple fact that every person has a story, and that every person deserves an education.
As one of my board colleagues reminded the students in Juvenile Hall: "Education is the one thing that cannot be taken from you."

Educational apps.
I am a preschool teacher and we just got our iPads that we got from a fundraiser. What are some free apps to help children from just learning their alphabet to starting to read and children who still need help with their numbers to children who are adding and subtracting. Apps that help practice writing.

University Project: Opinions on Betsy devos
Hello r/education!
I am currently studying my undergraduate degree in the UK and as a side project I am writing an article on the appointment of Betsy Devos and it would be really helpful to have opinions from those affected by her appointment e.g. teachers, administrators etc.
Obviously replying anonymously is fine but if you could tell me your role that would help me filter the information given.
A reply to this thread is fine or alternatively message me if you would like to give your opinions privately.
Thanks in advance.

University of Phoenix: Should I leave it on my LinkdIn?
I know this has been posted countless times, but those posts are archived and over a year old. So, I wanted fresh information on what to do.
I have a Bachelor's from UoP and I leave it off my resume (Now, anyway) and my LinkdIn to remove the stigma and judgement behind it.
Now, at the time (2009), I had only heard about UoP being easy to enroll in, transfer to, and the physical school was 3 miles from my home. After exhausting local colleges and universities and being subsequently rejected, I really had no choice as I was nearing my mid-twenties and needed something to start generating income over the plethora of min-wage jobs I had under my belt.
So, when I graduated in 2013, I thought I was ready for career work. 3 years later, I finally landed a salary position completely unrelated to my 'degree' after countless interviews and applications leading no where...
After reading horror stories, I'm beginning to realize why I was never even considered even though I have plenty of personal and hands-on experience. I understand the stigmas with for-profits, but I find it unfair that I'm being judged simply because I didn't go to fancy brick and mortar school or one that is recognized locally versus something I had the only chance to enroll in at the time... I like to say I've plenty of experience on my resume to circumvent that kind of ignominy (a lot of IT experience), but I was proven wrong I guess...
I'll eventually go back to university one day. I'm fine working where I do, but now, coworkers are trying to add me on LinkdIn and I've only posted the other college I went to that I didn't even get a degree from since I transferred. They're wondering what I did for X amount of years, but I fear putting UoP on my LinkdIn will have adverse affects to my current employment...
Should I even bother placing UoP on my LinkdIn?

Questions concerning Financial feasibility
After a debate with a friend over there not being enough programs to help the under-educated and economically disadvantaged achieve higher learning, I had a few questions regarding the ideas I put forth in that debate.
How financially feasible would it be for states to fully subsidize GED classes and tests for those who do not have but wish to get the equivalent of a high school diploma? (for those who fall below a certain income level)
How financially feasible would it be for states to fully subsidize a low-income student's attempts at remedial classes taught at community colleges that are intended to bring a student's skill levels in math, reading, and writing up to college-ready levels?
How financially feasible would it be for states to issue a small grant (usable at in-state, public two year colleges) to students who pass those remedial classes in order to be eligible to take college-level courses?
Also, what about the feasibility of giving students in-county qualifications if the in-state, public two-year college they wish to attend is out of county but still the closest option to their current residence?
How financially feasible would it be for a program to be set up that, after achieving the core curriculum or Associate's Degree from an in-state, public two year college, would cut tuition for that student at a public university in the same state by 10% for the next sixty credit hours?
(These ideas are simply ideas. I am quite sure that there would be flaws with these ideas that I'm not currently thinking of - I'm not a genius after all. They're not meant to be "This is what needs to be done" statements.)

Should all public schools in America make the students undertake religious teachings as part of their curriculum?
I was helping with checking my schools laptops ( to see if they were working well) in a classroom that was having a sort of after school christian club.
Let me just say that the school that I go to does have other religions besides christianity being embraced by the students. There is Islam...but I haven't really noticed any other religion being represented/ embraced by the studebts students. I haven't seen any instance of Judaism, Hinduism or really any other religion besides christianity and Islam in my school.
Anyway, I was present in a classroom that was having a sort of christian meet. I listened in and found it to be very interesting, as it comforted the students about loss and educated them on behavior. However, as it went on the person that was speaking ( a very religious teacher) started talking about hell...which I really thought was unnecessary and maybe a bit too mature for a bunch of,what, 6th graders. Then there was the part where he was talking about how other religions were wrong...
This isn't a talk about what that teacher said, so im just going to end it there. However, after the meeting ended I was thinking to myself about how there wasn't another club that educated the student body about other religions (major or lesser. ), and then started to wonder why there was a christian club in the first place. I started wondering why we would even teach the children of my school christianity, when we weren't going to expand their minds to other religions as well.
I believe that religion should be seperate from education being taught in school, as I just don't agree with ones belief dictating what is taught to wide group of kids. I think that creates a sort of educational bias that gears the structure of education towards a specific religious group instead of the entirety of students that attend one or many schools. Not only that, but the teaching of a controlled amount of religion(s) in the curriculum of a student, only for them to go home and have these teachings solidified by the students parent (s), might cause the student to grow up to be closed minded, and incapable of accepting other forms of religions, or even certain factors of the real world, into their life. If in the situation where it was about to be so that religion was about to become a deciding factor in what you or your child would learn during the school day, or if it was becoming so that learning one specific religion ( a religion pre-picked by your school) was about to become mandatory for you or your child to graduate, then how would you react to such? Do you believe that religion should play any role in the education being used in the schools that are located where you live? If you do, then how should it be used and why? If not, then why do you believe so?
Thank you for reading! (:

Save Education Data
Hi! I am concerned about the threat to national education data that has long been publicly available for families, researchers, and educators. This data has helped us identify where we were serving students well and where students, as a group, were falling into the cracks. In the special education research world, this data has been invaluable for supporting our students.
Given that so many federally run data sources are being threatened (e.g., NASA data related to climate change), I am concerned that the same may happen for data that supports educating all students. Does anyone have suggestions for how I can save this data and host it somewhere accessible for everyone and protect it from tampering (given that I know nothing about coding other than how to play Robot Turtles with my kids)?

Switching Classes
Hello there,
I'm someone that literally went to Lower Merion High School, yes the same high school Kobe Bryant went to. But, it wasn't completely exciting. Junior year was an utter disaster and here's why.
My history teacher that year was someone named Susan, who was there for a long time, and was there when Kobe was there. (I wonder if she taught Kobe.) Susan was quite a wonderful teacher, but I could not say the same about the class I was in. That class (Period 8) was so awful to the point where Susan deemed it the worst class she ever taught. She was very overwhelmed by my class, and so was I, especially when I would get punished along with everyone due to my classmates antics. (Her punishments weren't too severe though.)
Luckily, Susan taught several other US History classes that year including one class that was really heavenly. (Period 4) This particular class had such a wonderful combination of students. As a matter of fact, I considered her Period 4 class to be one of the best combos of students during my time at LM and Susan herself once said that she considered that class to be a "dream". I decided to make a request to my guidance counselor to switch from Period 8 to Period 4. Luckily, because I had an elective Period 4, it wouldn't of affected my schedule. Easy, right?
Wrong! My guidance counselor, without even looking into it, straight up told that the switch isn't happening. To make matters worse, there was literally another student that started off in my history class, but that switched to Period 4. That's literally the exact same switch I wanted to make. When I told my guidance counselor that, he still refused without looking into it. Unbelievable, right? And it gets even worse, too, I'm sorry to say.
I decided to take matters into my own hands. I did so by trying to switch from Period 8 to Period 4 myself several times. But unfortunately, my support teachers (I had an IEP) were also against me switching classes, and when they would find out about my plans (via Susan), they would literally go as far as to get the administration involved, therefore, not only my plans failed, but it caused me to earn a trip to the administrator's office every single time. At this point, you guys are probably at this point thinking, WTF
Sadly, because of all that happened, I ended up stuck in the horrible Period 8 class until the year ended. Wasn't in Period 4 for even a day :( All throughout my senior year, I was so mad. Mad at my guidance counselor, my support teachers, the administration, you name it.
But now, I only blame myself for why the switch failed. This is because several years later, I all of the sudden realized that I didn't write a letter to the superintendent explaining the situation I was in. If I were to write to the superintendent, I think it would cause me to successfully make the switch because 8th grade, I was literally in a similar situation, except that time I did switch classes. Why??? Because I wrote to the superintendent. To this day, I am having trouble figuring out why I did not think of writing to the superintendent my junior year, when it would of likely yielded to a much happier result. In addition, my parents (Who were also against me switching classes my junior year) believe that if I did write to the superintendent, it would of only landed me into trouble. This confuses me because I don't get why they think the result would of been the complete opposite of what it was in my 8th grade year.
What are your thoughts on everything I just shared. How do you believe your public high school would of handled a situation like this? And what do you all believe would of happened if I did write to the superintendent about my dilemma my junior year?

Looking for religious studies lessons
I want to teach a religious studies (religious history) course next year, high school level. I'm aiming for freshmen/sophomore level, but not opposed to junior/senior level. I'm hoping to balance the major religions evenly I want to giv e each of the five majors its own six weeks, Abrahamic during 1st semester, Eastern during 2nd semester, possibly saving the final six weeks for miscellaneous religions (Shinto, Native American, etc). Anyone know where I could look to get lessons, maybe even an entire year's skeleton? I'd be willing to pay.
Not sure if it matters, but I'm an atheist with an above average amount of background knowledge teaching at a charter school that is emphatic about this idea. (And for the record, we also hate Betsy Devos.) I want to teach this because there's a high interest with the students who barely know anything about religions. No joke, most don't know Christianity's creation myth or that there's more than one type of Buddhism.

unusual homework policy, how do I handle it?
Hello. I've got a college math teacher that gives me homework, but only half the answers are in the back of the book. A decent amount of types of questions have no answers or hints. It's been a month and he has hasn't collected and graded any homework. We've no quizzes to analyze our understanding of the material so even he has no idea. Then we have a major test. I can't remember ever coming out of a test wondering if I aced it or failed it. I failed it. I have no issue doing a lot of homework and really pouring myself into a subject. However I simply don't understand how the heck I'm supposed to know if I'm doing things right. Is this an acceptable, typical way to teach? Or am I the one who is screwing up? I mean in calc we had online practice that would generate tons of questions and make it easy to identify areas I was weak in and then I could do extra practice questions for those areas. In this class, I've got 'maybe I did this problem right and maybe I didn't and I could do it a hundred more times but it doesn't matter because I don't know if I'm doing it right nor not.' Any help would be appreciated. Maybe I'm missing something simple.
Thanks

Reading textbooks before starting University?
Hi everyone: First of all because this is my first post on this sub I'm sorry if this post does not meet the submition standards of this sub. If I have made any mistakes please do not hesitate to let me know. In a couple weeks I'm going to begin my first year of university. We've purchased most of the textbooks I'm going to need for this year.
I'm wondering whether I should read them before I begin my year. On one hand it makes sense to me as it gives me an idea about the content of the subject, and if nothing else, gives me the feeling that I have a head start on the year.
On the other hand, I have books that have nothing to do with school, but I am really interested in reading them. Furthermore, it would be irritating if I spend all my time reading the textbooks only to find out that we won't use them that much in class.
I'm sorry if this came off as a poorly worded rant. It's just a question that I've been asking myself lately.
TL;DR: Should I read my text books before I begin univeristy?

How is technology being incorporated into anti-oppressive education pedagogies?
I'm interested more broadly in learning about how technology and e-learning both promote and stymie diversity–racial, socioeconomic... even diversity of thought.
I'm secondarily interested in learning about how technology shapes pedagogy in the United States with an emphasis on educational access (e.g. the idea mentioned by Sal Kahn to listen to Ted Talk style lectures online at home, and then do projects, worksheets, group activities (etc.) in the classroom). I know this has been done places like Peru and changed their school system, but I'm interested in learning more about this in the US.
Thanks so much.

I believe local public schools are crucial for a peaceful and prosperous society.
The school choice/charter/voucher debate ignores the importance of having a local school as a cultural institution in every neighborhood. Schools are not just centers for the transfer of information. They are cultural hubs. Schools promote scholarship, arts, athletics, civics, community, and culture. Schools don't exist to output good employees. They exist to maintain and advance society.

How do you set homework in the age of GroupChats?
Some students recently told me they have GroupChats (on facebook, istagram, etc.) for every subject, and that often this makes it easy for someone to do homework then take a picture and share it with the rest of the class. Copying homework is nothing new, but it seems to me that new tools have made it much easier, faster and more convenient to copy. Has anyone taken stock of this and started setting different types of homework?

American schools Are holding a National Teach-in on February 17. Anyone participating?
Looks like there's a growing call for a national teach-in in the US next Friday - nothing disruptive or partisan, simply an opportunity to respond to growing concerns about educational policy and other shifts in public consciousness by asking teachers to consider focusing on relevant issues and topics that day within their own curricula and standards. I already know of several teachers in High School and Middle school levels planning on exploring topics of immigration poetry, climate change, the branches of government and their checks and balances, and the history of protest.
Anyone else in? What do we think about this action?

Should we trust parents to homeschool their children?
I personally have a natural distrust in homeschooling. I've read about parents homeschooling their children so they can abuse them, teach them to be agenda-filled sycophants, and raise them in cults. I don't think that the education of the next generation should just be handed over to their parents in the name of "personal liberties". Isn't most of what a child learns from their friends anyway?

With the DeVos backlash and parents suggesting to homeschool, what are the differencedimensions in achievement outcomes between homeschooled children and otherwise?
Basically what the title suggests. I imagine it's quite varied as outcomes between schools can be too. Perhaps a broad generalisation?
I'm quite curious about what people tend to homeschool as a group in general, their motivations behind and the general community feel and experience parents and children have.
