I feel it's fair to state my biases up front. I don't see military action in the past few decades as primarily anything more than protecting financial interests of the already powerful, or as a nice way to sell goods to the military.
My school is moving towards giving the ASVAB to all 10th graders. I understand that recruiters are not given information for 10th graders who test and the test is being given for career exploration reasons. I am highly uncomfortable with this move. I view it as advertising for the military. The military would not allocate money to 10th grade ASVAB testing if there wasn't some recruitment benefit. When the ASVAB is discussed on campus, plain clothes personnel are sent and describe the test as career exploratory in nature. The armed services are never mentioned. I work in a title one school charter school focused on first generation college attendance. I have no problem with the ASVAB being offered, but it seems to me like people are not being transparent about what it is.
I took the ASVAB while in high school, but I knew what it was and had to opt in.
What are your experiences with the ASVAB in your schools? Am I being unreasonably concerned?
