Is setting / marking homework a problem in schools? Is it effective or time consuming?

How do we cater for students with different abilities? Is every student given the same piece of homework and do they enjoy doing something standardised?

Do you think teachers would benefit from software that generated personalised homework based on individual formative assessments which were different for every student? Every student has their own personalised learning / homework cycle that is automatically marked every time to track or measure progress?
