What is a proven-to-work way to learn a language by oneself?

I'm looking for a good way to learn French by myself since I will have a lot of free time now that there are summer holidays.

I usually prefer to be taught by a teacher because I'm not very good at self-learning and I did in fact start learning with a teacher, I've had a total of 10 lessons, 45 minutes each (so I know the very basics), but I wasn't that satisfied with those and in addition to that, the place I was going to doesn't offer lessons during holidays and there's kind of a lack of French teachers that are known to be good so I'm a little bit scared of putting money and time into something that won't work anyways. Even if I found a teacher, I would still appreciate some tips and tricks because I'd want to study regardless of the lessons I'd attend.

I'd like to find a way different than just learning from regular textbooks since I attended German at school and that way of learning without other things to support it didn't get me anywhere and I started actually hating the language and lost all motivation. On the other hand, I learned English kind of "naturally" and I'm looking for a way to maybe try and do a similar thing with French but I have no clue how to start.

In terms of other perhaps useful information, spending money on learning aids is not a problem whatsoever, I have a French-speaking friend with whom I can most likely talk a little bit to improve speaking skills but I need to learn more basics first (and it's sometimes a little awkward to do things like these with a friend that is the same age) and I'm living in Poland so pointing me towards very specific books and whatnot may not be a very good idea since they may not be accessible.

tl;dr: I have a lot of free time, don't have a teacher, need suggestions for effective learning of French

(btw. I won't be able to answer questions and suggestions for quite a while because it's very late here, but I'm posting this now to get to people in NA, hope that isn't a big problem)
