7 year old being taught about Francis Drake against the Spanish Armada

Hello,

Just seen my nephew clutching a British flag he drew in class after being taught about the Spanish Armada.

I was just curious as to what the greater thinking behind teaching kids this kind of stuff. I look back at what I learnt in primary school history and it about the Egyptians and Romans. I remember being shown the structures and architecture more than anything else.

We were also taught WWII and all I remember is that 'we won' and the pictures of trenches. This is recent major history so I can justify it. I am not anti being taught about war, it happens, its good to make children aware of this to avoid the stress of turning on the news at 10years old. But I don't see the purpose of being taught about a war 400 years ago when all the kids will remember are boats being sunk and pictures of cannons. As well as the hammering home of how unbelievably brilliant our country is...

I'm also not suggesting that British kids should be made to think about issues of colonialisation and think our countries horrible...far from it. Main question is really, do teachers have free rein over whats being taught or are they able to choose? Nephew only seems to be told about war rather than inventions...other time periods there were great innovations.

I ask as I am no knowledge on a 7yr olds mind, I hope someone might be, I RESPECT THE TEACHERS
