Community collage vs Post graduate year at a private high school vs militarily vs adult education education classes at the YMCA

My friend and I were talking about how a lot of High schools really dumb down the curriculum and lower work standard and kids graduate with high gpa's and get into high collage and end up in remedial classes. We were also talking about kids that are talented and smart but don't get their heads out of their asses until later on and need to recover some of the key points they missed in middle and high school. How do the four options add up for someone who was accepted to collage but want's to fill in knowledge gaps or become a better student. This is more of a hypothetical than a specific situation. and for the purpose of this question lets talk about the academic and personal development differences not the financial.
