Human Rights Courses/Curriculum

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some input on anyone who may be teaching Human Rights at a high school level as an elective. I'm a fairly new teacher, but my colleagues always complain about the electives they teach. One is genuinely a dumping ground for kids who don't have enough credits, and the other one is alright.

I was looking for some high school level curriculum/syllabi but really couldn't find much online. Does anyone here have any experience on this or a possible curriculum they'd be able to share? I was thinking a course might look something like this in terms of possible units.

  1. Foundations of Human Rights (Basic ideas behind it, history of justice in the world)
  2. History of modern Human Rights (Look at historical human rights violations/atrocities, development of Universal Declaration of Human Rights)
  3. Case Studies in modern day human rights violations
  4. A research project where students research a human rights violation in today's world and attempt to develop a solution to the human rights violations.

Any input or advice is helpful!
