Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some input on anyone who may be teaching Human Rights at a high school level as an elective. I'm a fairly new teacher, but my colleagues always complain about the electives they teach. One is genuinely a dumping ground for kids who don't have enough credits, and the other one is alright.
I was looking for some high school level curriculum/syllabi but really couldn't find much online. Does anyone here have any experience on this or a possible curriculum they'd be able to share? I was thinking a course might look something like this in terms of possible units.
- Foundations of Human Rights (Basic ideas behind it, history of justice in the world)
- History of modern Human Rights (Look at historical human rights violations/atrocities, development of Universal Declaration of Human Rights)
- Case Studies in modern day human rights violations
- A research project where students research a human rights violation in today's world and attempt to develop a solution to the human rights violations.
Any input or advice is helpful!
