In The Netherlands pupils do a test at age 11 which determines what kind of secondary school they are allowed to attend. There are three types:
-
Pre-vocational education: lasts 4 years and gives acces to vocational school (plumber, nurse, police officer, programmer, hairdresser, dental assistant etc.)
-
Higher general secondary education: lasts 5 years and gives acces to vocational university (teacher, paralegal, dietician, physiotherapist etc.) provides you with a bachelors degree.
-
Pre-university education: lasts 6 years and gives acces to university (Doctor, lawyer, researcher, dentist etc.) provides you with a masters degree.
What's your opinion on a system like this? I personally think it's a good system, because everyone gets the education they need. I attended pre vocational education and I liked that my classmates were at roughly the same level as me. It's also not that rigid because I "stacked" my degrees afterwards to enter university.
I believe this tracking system is used by Germany as well. I don't know about other countries.
