White students; Black schools
Hi, all. I'm curious if anyone has experience with white students in predominantly black schools - from a teacher, parent, or any other perspective. I'm a teacher of over a decade in predominantly black schools where there were practically zero white students. My kindergarten-aged daughter just started at that neighborhood school. She's white and the majority of the school is black.
My daughter, who was very excited about starting school and is a very verbose kid, is mostly mum when we ask her about her school day.
I'm just curious what people's experiences are, as I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it. It's strange to be in a mostly white neighborhood and see very few kids at the school. Is it because most parents are scared/inherently racist? I think the principal and teachers seem great and my observation of the school is that kids are mostly happy.
Also, is there anything that we should be doing for our daughter to help her make sense of the process. We've never discussed race explicitly with her, just skin color when she has observed that her skin is similarly colored to ours and that her brown-skinned friends have similar skin color to their parents.
Any kinds of experiences, thoughts, and insights are appreciated (as long as they are in the spirit of love and understanding.)
Thanks!

A career question for you experts
Hi all. My son is currently a senior in high school. His entire life he has wanted to be a teacher. Currently, his plan is to be a high school math teacher. Sorry for the long post but I have a few questions for you pros:
-
First, we are discussing majors for him in college. As I said, he wants to be a math teacher. He happens to be a very gifted student (National Merit Semi-finalist, 5.7/5.0 GPA). Not to brag, but our first thought is he should be a Secondary Ed major with an emphasis in Math. However, I personally think he should major in Mathematics just to give him security in case he decides he does not want to be a teacher. I think it would be easier in college to transition to other careers with a Math major rather than a Sec Ed major. Thoughts/advice?
-
He has a chance for some very nice merit based scholarships. One of them is basically a full ride for up to 5 years of school (including grad school). Given his AP credits, he could start at this school as a 2nd semester Sophomore. If he wanted, he could likely obtain a Masters in 2nd Ed for free. I think this is an almost no brainer. He said, however, that some teachers have told him that having a Masters so early would make it more difficult for him to be hired by school districts. Does anyone know if this is true?
Any advice or insight you have is much appreciated. Thanks!

Website building platform?
Friends in the education world, I need advice about website building platforms. I need to build a site that can stream video and audio (big-ish files... not features, but possibly greater than 15 minutes), has a blog page function (but isn't solely a blogging site), have the ability to password protect single pages or sets of pages, allows for file downloads, can easily embed html, has a mobile platform for basic editing and blogging, has multiple templates and the ability to modify them, and won't break the bank. I've used Weebly and would use it again, but wondering if there are other options I don't know about.

Use of Graphing Calculators in the US
Today I was shocked after seeing my colleague (22, 3rd year at Community college) at work using a graphing calculator to solve a super simple homework problem.
http://ift.tt/2cxUWxe http://ift.tt/2dnHgLl
Why are graphing calculators allowed or even mandatory for some classes throughout high school and university level education in the US?
I recently graduated (MSc) from engineering school in Croatia and even though we did pretty advanced math (Calculus) we were NEVER allowed to use a graphing calculator. Casio 991-fx was our best and only friend both at home and on exams. You could solve some basic problems with it but "the math" was left to do it yourself. Graph. calcs were considered sci-fi used only by professional scientists and mathematicians.

History Classes As Required Courses
Now don't get me wrong, I like History and feel that it is important to teach it, but when I'm majoring in Psychology I don't feel like two courses of American/Texas History should be forcefully counted into my GPA. I'd just like to hear reasons to why I am having to take these courses and perhaps see it from a different prospective.
Thank you.

Camouflage tasks
I don't know if I'm even in the right subreddit for this. However, a couple weeks ago, I had a course in effective learning. One thing that caught my mind was what they called "camouflage tasks". This is a task that seems inherently more important at the moment than what you're about to is even though it is not.
An example for this could be: instead of doing my math, I felt a great urge of writing this post, program a little bit and clean my vacuum my house etc.
Here's the thing: after being aware of this little thing, I notice this happen no matter what. It's not that I prefer programming or cleaning my house over doing my math (Math is one of my favorite subjects). It's that these camouflage tasks show up no matter what. Whenever I'm about to clean my room, I might just end up doing my math instead.
Is there anyone that know the answer to why this happens?

Reading problems- NEED TIPS
i just started a class in college that i'm really enjoying but is reading-heavy. i have a hard time reading/comprehension wise and find it difficult to read large chunks of material and absorb what's going on (i am a total auditory learner). i have been making up for this by reading the assigned chapter and youtubing related videos to summarize key figures/stories/etc mentioned in the reading. for me, listening to people lecture is 1000x easier to comprehend than reading. i have been doing well so far because of this, but i know there will be times when there won't be am educational youtube video or auditory way of learning. so i was wondering if any of you had some tips i could use to strengthen my reading comprehension skills?

Why is PE "Easier" for girls?
So i know that in a lot of countries, girls don't need to perform as well as men to get the same grade, because men are on average, stronger, and better at physical task in general. So why is this? it's not like any job you go to will care about your PE grades, they'll care about how much you can actually do, because they know that a girl that got an A or a 6 can be weaker than a man who did the same.
Another thing is: Girls get on average better grades in classes on math, science, physics and such, so why isn't it easier for men to get the same grades in those classes?
Ohh, and please don't look at this as complaining, I'm fine with the system. I'm just curious.
