Do I wait to take the prereq placement test or just dive into it already?

26years old now, got my GED 8 years ago so it's been a while. There's a lot of math in the program I'm seeking. I'm at about a 10th grade level, if that in certain areas. If I take the placement test now I'll have a shit ton of prereq's which means more money right, and I'm not sure how fafsa would cover that much extra. Do I study my ass off online(plenty of helpful websites) for 6 months then sign up for school or do I just start formally already despite how far behind I am?
