I finished with college, doing a couple gap years now before settling on long term work. I'm especially attracted to being a college professor, especially at a small liberal arts college where I'd be able to focus on teaching and make close relationships with students.
There are a few things I'm worried about though. I do have parents who emphasize that I make a high salary, basically get "successful" in the very traditional sense. While this factor isn't the most important of things, I'm curious if anyone out there can anyone out there fill me in on whether college professors struggle with low pay? I know that's generally a problem with teachers, but my impression is that it's not as prevalent for college professors. I may be wrong though.
Another is, one of my professors told me that I shouldn't enter academia if I care about where I want to live. Is this sound advice?
Last is, I heard some horror stories of college professors having no free time and being generally overworked. Is this true, more so than for other professions?
Thanks for all your help!
