I am in the process of translating an English pop science book (What If? from Randal Munroe) to my language, and I'm not sure whether translating the reference is beneficial or not. On one hand, leaving them untranslated is widely acceptable in any popsci book, and encouraged in any writing style (Chicago, ISO). On the other hand, this book is not only a popsci book, it's also written in humorous style with comic, in which a kid wrote it to other kids. That way, even the references should also be informative as much as possible. By translating it as if it is regular text, they can get accustomed to academic norms.
But if they don't like reading them, then there's no point to translate them, right? That's why I would like to see how the German translation handles this. AFAIK, it was announced at the same time with the original one, which pursues perfectionism. It should have the same mindset with it. The Portuguese translation doesn't do this.
