Math Teachers Who Took a Break
Hello, all!
I've been teaching math for 3 years now and before that I worked in the seismic industry as a data analyst. I'm not hating teaching, but I'm thinking about taking a break and trying out other professions. I'm still young. Those of you with a math degree or something similar, what other jobs have you taken on with your degree? Thanks for any other information!

Teach or No? What to do?
I just finished obtaining my teaching cert. and I am getting the feeling that this is not right for me after being in many different classrooms and long term subbing. I'm thinking of a career change or something in education but outside of the classroom. Financial reasons as well. Can people please comment on career changing from teaching to something else and getting out of the classroom to provide more meaning in others lives and their own lives while earning decent money with less stress? (Yes, I realize decent money is up to interpretation.) Thank you. Metro Detroit Area

How to encourage college students to use learning resources?
I am a lab tech that supports an engineering Capstone design course at an R1 public University. There are about 130 students in the class, and we provide them with numerous resources on professional development, design best practices, technical writing, prototype developement, etc, in written and video format.
From reading their reports and looking at the designs they are creating, it is obvious that they are not reading or watching any of this content, and their projects and reports are not improving as we provide additional learning resources.
Without increasing their workload and forcing them to read this stuff, how can I better encourage students to seek out this knowledge? At this point, I feel like I am wasting my time by curating all of these resources for students who arn't going to read them.
Thanks for reading.

In an ideal world how much should one take away from a class
Im a biological sciences undergrad and lately I've been wondering what it is that Im exactly meant to be taking away from courses that contain a breadth of information on complex topics that can't be seen with the naked eye.
It can almost be overwhelming some days, especially on the lead up to comprehensive finals that are assessed by multiple choice rather than essays, which seems to favour memorization of minor details over understanding of concepts.
Most of the time I feel like I get nothing out of it by the time I'm a semester removed from the course. Sure there are bits of information floating around but since I am not interacting with that particular topic on a day to day basis it doesn't stick. What's the point? Is it to simply show that you are capable of learning and to become acclimated to particular topics before going for graduate courses?

NSLC: Worth it or waste of time?
Got an invitation, but I figured it wasn't uncommon because I don't get fantastic grades. When I look at the programs, I see a bunch of people more talented than myself in the pictures. For example, Law & Advocacy intrigues me, but I remember I was part of a mock trial in middle school and got absolutely destroyed in our case by the opposing attornies. That kind of kills my ambition. So, if I'm not inherently talented or ambitious in any of these fields, other than possibly forensic sciences and engineering, is it worth it to take on the program? I wish they had something for creative writing, but journalism isn't for me either.

America is held hostage by a Democracy warped by a nation of a citizenry incapable of reasoning or thinking critically.
I blame the American education establishment. Good job teaching Americans nothing matters but your gross monetary intake. Now they've elected the epitome of the image they've been taught to strive for. And right from reality television - the next logical step from an all money, all the time classroom curricula. Educating kids is a sin
Why do we expect little kids to consume information that took humans thousands of years to accumulate. How could we force theorems and abstract concepts down their throats at such a tender age?
We follow an outdated school system that prepares kids for the industrial revolution, they are made to sit in rows like assembly workers and each one graded, the same way manufactured parts are graded for their quality.
Kids start out with wonderful questions like, "Why is the sky so blue?", "Why does the sun go down everyday?". Beautiful scientific questions. Wait for them to grow up for college, you very well know the situation, from suicide from the pressure to complete indifference. The death of curiosity.
We are living in an Information Age, hundreds of years from the Industrial Age. In a decade or so, we won't have enough jobs to send our kids to. There's a high chance every job out there can be automated, not only the mechanical ones.
We're in a dire need to revamp the education model for the Information Age. By the time they graduate, it would be in a world where every single job is automated. Not to mention the drastically increasing life expectancy.
I say, compulsory education should amount to reading and writing. The rest, when they ask "Dad, why's the grass so green, why are there so many different animals on it?". We should say, "That's a great question, sweetheart, here's an online encyclopedia, why don't we find out?"

What would you do differently if you could design a school from the ground up?
Hello r/education!
I have been brought on to coordinate the design of a new high school for students who are off-track from reaching graduation. I am in charge of gathering as much evidence as possible (anecdotal and quantitative) to help the design team determine how the school should be designed. We are relying heavily on student and other stakeholder input in our design process.
I am interested in hearing from anybody with ideas about how to make school better for those who struggle in traditional settings. Please include your background or occupation in your response. If you have links to articles or other resources, please include those as well.
Thank you for your help!
