Im a biological sciences undergrad and lately I've been wondering what it is that Im exactly meant to be taking away from courses that contain a breadth of information on complex topics that can't be seen with the naked eye.
It can almost be overwhelming some days, especially on the lead up to comprehensive finals that are assessed by multiple choice rather than essays, which seems to favour memorization of minor details over understanding of concepts.
Most of the time I feel like I get nothing out of it by the time I'm a semester removed from the course. Sure there are bits of information floating around but since I am not interacting with that particular topic on a day to day basis it doesn't stick. What's the point? Is it to simply show that you are capable of learning and to become acclimated to particular topics before going for graduate courses?
