The Art of Questioning: Reclaiming Curiosity in a Defensive World

Why I’m Writing About Questions

https://open.substack.com/pub/vincehill/p/the-art-of-questioning-reclaiming?r=167ttm&utm_medium=ios

I’ve been listening to politicians face questions lately, only to watch them deflect with spin, half-truths, and innuendoes. It raises a deeper unease in me: why are people so uncomfortable with honest questions from individuals simply searching for truth, trying to understand the why? While I’ve written a lot of political pieces lately, this feels more personal, more universal.

As a principal, a teacher, and a writer wrestling with the world’s noise, I’ve spent years teaching students to think critically, to probe deeper, to not settle for surface answers. Yet everywhere I look, questioning feels under siege. Curiosity, once my lifeline, now gets labeled as intrusive, unsafe, even threatening. We’ve traded wonder for defensiveness, and it’s costing us connection, wisdom, self-knowledge.

This three-part series, The Art of Questioning: Reclaiming Curiosity in a Defensive World, is my response. Starting today with Part 1, we’ll journey from the child who asks “why” to the adult who dares to again. I’ll share stories from my life, my classroom, my years learning to stay silent and then unlearning it. My hope is simple: to model a way of questioning rooted in care, not judgment, that helps us know others, the world, and ourselves better.

If you’ve ever felt your curiosity shrink, or sensed a world quick to shut down honest inquiry, this is for you. Join me weekly. Ask in the comments. Let’s rebuild what questions can be.

Me senti muito fracassado.

Is traditional school really worth it?

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about education. We spend so many years in school learning stuff, but I’m not sure how much actually helps in real life.

Some things are useful, like basic math and writing. Other things feel pointless or outdated. I see people learning online or on their own and doing great without following the usual path.

What substitute teacher activities actually work in middle school classrooms?

Teaching 7th grade and trying to figure out what makes a lesson plan work when you're not there. Some things subs can handle easily, others fall apart immediately.

Technology heavy lessons are hit or miss. If the sub doesn't know the platform or students have login issues, the whole period is shot. But worksheets feel like we're wasting a day.

What do you leave for subs that's actually educational but doesn't require you to be there to troubleshoot? Especially for tech related lessons where middle schoolers should be able to work independently?

Honest question for anyone in college or just out?

Was there a moment you realized the path you picked might not be the one you actually want?

Not a vague "I'm exploring options" feeling. The specific moment something cracked.

What triggered yours? And what did you actually do about it?

For my Aspiring Instructional Designers -- Building a "Business Ready" Portfolio Piece

Hi education friends!

I've spent the past 5 years helping teachers transition out of the classroom and into corporate L&D as someone who has been in the instructional design world for a decade.

One thing I find is that "teacher portfolios" often get ignored because they're full of lesson plans rather than projects that show you understand the difference between a student and a stakeholder who is trying to solve a specific problem by a deadline (usually ASAP).

If you're trying to make the switch, the hardest part is usually teaching yourself new tools (like authoring tools). You know the drill, watch endless YouTube tutorials, try something, get frustrated, repeat.

Full transparency -- I am a judge for the iSpring Course Creation Contest that will be launching later this spring, but beyond that, I love telling people about it because it gives you free access to an authoring tool and a deadline. You can create a portfolio asset -- but on top of it, you can also win some pretty sweet prizes and get feedback from real corporate learning experts. The contest hasn't launched yet, so I don't have a link to share, but you can follow iSpring on social media to get updates.

Even if you're not interested in the contest, I encourage you to think about these things as you create portfolio projects - Don't wait for the perfect idea - just pick a business prompt (or get AI to help) and build it - Don't spend too much time on one thing -- you won't be able to do this in the real world - Get real feedback - practice getting feedback now because there's nothing worse than a hiring manager tearing apart your work!

How will the “enrollment cliff” reshape higher education over the next decade?

With declining birth rates from the late 2000s now reaching college age, many institutions are preparing for what’s being called the “enrollment cliff.” Some regions are already seeing shrinking freshman classes.

For those working in higher ed (or closely connected to it):

  • Are you already seeing enrollment impacts?
  • How are institutions responding - lowering admissions standards, increasing online programs, expanding international recruitment, cutting programs?
  • Do you think smaller colleges will survive this shift?

I’m curious whether this will fundamentally change higher education - or if the system will simply consolidate and adapt.

I was told to play dumb my whole childhood life for SSI checks and now my brain feels locked

i have to be brutal and honest i never learned nothing in school. my dad was a wise man and calm and he tried to teach us spanish but my mom was mentally sick and would tell him to shut up because she didnt know what he was saying. she was controlling and always yelling and fighting with him jumping out the car running off having another child with another man and she told us to play dumb so we wouldnt lose those ssi checks. she really pushed us all back from learning anything. when friends want to play board games or games I always try to come up with an excuse because I'm afraid it maybe something I'll have to say that I won't know and I don't want to look stupid in front of everyone

i was so far behind it literally hurt my brain to look at a book. i couldnt catch up and i started acting out because i felt dumb. we all wish we could speak spanish like my dad and we wish we would have completed school but the house was just a mess.

now i am an adult and i get overwhelmed and discouraged so fast. i can read and write a little but i dont know math or science or where to put commas and periods. i use my phone for answers but i want to actually be better and learn.

where do i even start when i cant even look at a 4th grade book without getting confused? is there anyone like me or am I alone it wasn't supposed to be like this.

Looking for good resources for learning

Hello! Last summer I (F18) have graduated school by finishing my Abitur (im from Germany) due to the fact that I was going through multiple traumatic events during my last 3 years of school I didn’t really grasp much from the classes since I was constantly fighting panic attacks in the hallways. Studying at home also wasn’t much of an option due to a terrible living situation at the time. After school I spent some time away and went to a mental health clinic to help with my psyche. Now that I am out and have some time to kill until I can try to get a university spot (I only have a 2.6 Abitur) I would really love to finally attempt to catch up on all kinds of knowledge I’ve missed out on. Specifically in Biology, Physics, Math and Chemistry so if anyone could give me good book recommendations or any documentaries, articles, anything really to get me started. I really am interested in everything and all I really want is to learn so much but I don’t know where to start. Thank you so much in advance :)

im almost 30 and education has never had any value in my life so far, i graduated from school and numerous courses and still didn't learn anything. and im not exaggerating. school was the absolute worst time in my life, the depression and anxiety that it gave me still follows me to this day, i absolutely don't even remember anything from school, i practually even forgot the face of my teachers and classmates by now. i feel like i failed by just being born, but also that everyone around me failed me too. so i just gave up on any sort of education by now, and even if didn't gave up it would be pointless too since ai will take everyone's job in less than a decade anyway

What am I supposed to do 😞

When I was is in 10th (almost 3 yrs) i decided to do engineering and develop mobile games then what happened is I got interested in web development quickly after i entered the college but in first year of diploma we learn only maths, science, and one Progrmming language called 'C' and i also had practical subject of computer graphics so by looking at the code of it got frustrated because of those math formulas so i decided to learn web developement but again We had html as practical and I didn't like the syntax of html (even right now i only know what h1,h2 tags are thats it ). Ok so let's continue, when I was in first year I get to know about these things i spoke earlier and after my worst day comes into the picture "ChatGPT" I know it was introduced in 2022 but I think it got popular by November 2023 so i watch YouTube videos saying that It can write code better than human , efficiently so then i decided to build using AI in 2024-25 I guess ( i learned cpp, java as well in second year ok) . Now i am in Third year and most intresting part is that I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO because see i love to build Mobile apps web apps using AI now so I can use tools like cursor, lovable etc(anyone i mean) so in these 2 year journey my mind hs forgotten WHAT I HAVE TO DO NEXT TO GET JOB after graduation which is after 4 yrs from now .

I lack in DSA (VERY MUCH like I am 0 in it). Now I can't even build Simple app manually but i can build with AI seamless and can assign my Late night Project ideas for my personal or public use case to AI agents. My most terrible part is i procrastinate over learning new things,i sometimes or mostly get affected by " analysis paralysis " Everyday instead of reading one fucking thing i EXPLORE New AI tools , book mark them ,watch reels about new Tips and tricks regarding those AI and yeah at last waste my time .

Parents, what do you feel you have learned from working relationships with teachers?

Hello, I am a (18y/o) college student who is studying to become a kindergarten teacher. I have an assignment that requires I interview a parent about their relationship with teachers. I decided that I would ask multiple people rather than just one. I’m hoping to get some good answers. As the title says, what do you feel that you have gained and learned from working with your children’s teachers? Do you feel like you can work well with them? Do you feel that working with teachers has helped you become a better parent? Do you feel that your relationship with the teacher has affected your child in any way? Do you feel they behave differently due to the relationship?

Our nightmare with an AZ private school: When “prestige” protects the wrong people.

I’m sharing this because I’m still reeling from the discovery that private schools often operate with a level of immunity that public schools simply don’t have. If you are currently looking at private education for your kids, please learn from our experience at Summit School of Ahwatukee.

My daughter’s time there was short and, frankly, traumatic. After we left, I spoke with multiple other parents and realized what I believe to be a systemic issue with bullying and predatory behavior that has been shielded for far too long. In my opinion, money and "status" buy immunity at this school. It feels like an administration that is more worried about their reputation than the safety of the children.

The Retaliation

I did what any parent would do: I advocated for my child. The "consequence" was my daughter being abruptly expelled late on a Friday night through no fault of her own.

The most heartbreaking part? I later listened to a recording of a head admin telling staff that I was a "danger" to the school specifically because I am a military veteran. They were told to call the police if I was even seen near the campus.

I was a combat flight medic. My entire career was about saving lives, not harming them. I was a classroom mom—I brought the coffee, I planned the parties, I volunteered. I never once raised my voice at them; I only cried while trying to protect my kid.

The Legal & Police Involvement

Since the expulsion, I’ve had to deal with what I feel is legal harassment from their lawyers based on false statements. I’ve had to have police escorts just to pick up my daughter’s things and to deliver paperwork for a restraining order against my daughter’s attacker. Shout out to our local PD, who were incredibly empathetic and saw through the school’s narrative immediately.

The Lesson

I’m sharing this because the only way to stop this kind of abuse of power is to talk about it. Private schools often lack the oversight and safety procedures of public or charter schools.

I will never stop fighting for justice for my daughter. If you’re a parent, please: listen to your kids, trust your gut, and don’t let a "prestigious" name blind you to what’s happening behind closed doors.

Has anyone else dealt with private school administrations retaliating against parents for reporting safety issues?

I kept seeing the same logic mistakes in essays: looking for 50 students to test.

I've been grading essays for a bit, and then kept seeing so many students make the same sorts of mistakes (claims that didn't follow earlier ones, contradictions, etc.).

So I built a small Chrome extension that scans argumentative essays and highlights possible internal contradictions. It doesn't rewrite your work, just finds these logical inconsistencies.

It’s free and there's no catch; I just want real feedback from people who write argumentative essays regularly, and to help you with your next essays.

If you’re interested in trying it or stress-testing it, comment and I’ll send the link. Also happy if you try to break it.

Can I live in a student house as a non student?

Hello!

I’m 23M, and just finished my studies in Melbourne and am over in Manchester for 6 months to get to know the city and also take some time to write my masters thesis proposal for when I go back to Aus to study. I am in the process of taking over the lease of a for 6 months from a previous tenant.

I don’t think this place is technically student accomodation (at least not associated with any particular uni) but it is a house of uni students. All was going pretty well until the agency asked for student ID/registration, which I am unable to provide as I am not currently a student (maybe also should be noted I am a British citizen!)

This system is new to me and I’m not quite sure how to go about this! Should I just come clean right off the bat and tell them I’m not a student and maybe appeal that I am doing my own independent study? Is there perhaps a way to imply that I am a student here without providing necessary documentation?

Career Move Suggestions?

I am currently in my 5th year in the classroom, and I’m trying to figure out my next move regarding my career trajectory and what I want to do. The majority of my teaching experience is in ESOL via sheltered content ELA and in Title I Schools.

I’m thinking about exploring curriculum instruction and development, with an emphasis on ESOL/ELA, as I’ve noticed that the ELA curricula we use often provide little support/guidance for working with this population of learners.

What advice would you give someone interested in this area? I should also mention I already have my EDs in ESOL, and I’m in the GA if that helps.

Causes of friction in Education?

I've recently come across the four curricular viewpoints by Schiro (and I'm sure others):

Scholar Academic- Learning to learn things

Student Cantered- Learning to teach kids what they want to learn

Social Efficiency- Teaching so students can get jobs

Social Reconstruction- making students aware of problems in the world, and shaping students into caring citizens.

It seems a lot of friction in education is due to conflicts in ideologies between various stakeholders (teachers, students, administrators, government, parents, media, etc.)

Am I out to lunch with this perspective?

Bad at school no matter what

I am so bad at school and I don't know why. Throughout middle school and high school I've always put effort into school and received below average grades. Sophomore year it was worse as I started failing and not caring about school. Junior year I decided to actually put in effort and would study for hours for minimal results, just short of passing. I'm in college for engineering now and still, just short of passing. I'm incredibly passionate about what I study but it seems no matter what I'm always a C student. Tried so many different strategies over the years none seem to work. Practice problems, tutors, practice tests, get good sleep, eat healthy, not stressed and still nothing. I have ADHD but I'm getting it treated and still see no results in my grades. I ask questions, understand the topics, practice over and over and no matter what there is something in the exam i didn't go over or something I forgot or some other thing and still Cs across the board. Am I just cursed with a brain not for school?

Drawing + typing apps. At a loss :)

Hiya, I'm assuming more posts like this exist, but since I'm very particular, I thought I'd make my own.

I'm a biomed major. Lots of typing + drawing. I'm looking for something to take notes on that both support writing and drawing. I, however, think I'm a bit too picky and can't find anything good.

VERY IMPORTANT: need to be able to work in same document on iPad and Windows.

What I've tried:

  1. Goodnotes: my go to, but the update ruined a lot. Furthermore, typing is limited: no multi level lists, styles ... overall like the drawing aspect. Hate the typing. Also girlfriend can't read handwriting so reciting is hard + handwriting everything is time consuming.

  2. Word: love the typing + styles. My go to for typing, but drawing is a pain. Especially when things shift and stuff. A mix of word typing and goodnotes writing is what I'm looking for.

  3. OneNote: Word is better in typing aspect and more versatile.

What I want:

  1. Word for typing: multi-level lists, premade styles, easy ...

  2. Drawing: hold to make straight line, lasso tool. Just good drawing like goodnotes.

  3. Cross-Platform cloud.

  4. Nice UI. Easy to navigate

I just can't seem to find the right place for it.

Right now it's keeping me from being productive and borderline making me panic because I just can't get it to work out for me.

Kindly leave your suggestions below :)

News Literacy courses in public schools: part 1 - Which party spreads more fake news?

Hey guys. I recently started a two part series on the importance of teaching News Literacy in public schools, and in the first part, I wanted to hop out of the echo chamber and see what the data actually said about which party spreads more misinformation.

Not surprisingly, Republicans are lying their fucking asses off compared to Democrats. It's not that Democrats don't spread misinformation either, but they seem to do it way less frequently than Republicans.

What really annoys me though is how there is even a debate on the threat of misinformation in America. For example, Duncan Watts is one of the biggest voices in this regard, even getting published in Nature. He basically makes the point that only a small % of the total content consumed on social media is misinformation, around 1%, so we shouldn't obsess over a problem that isn't there.

The massive flaw in this argument though is how narrow his definition of misinformation is. For example, InfoWars, Real Raw News. The sites that you would have to be a monkey to not see through. However, if you include mainstream media in that definition, then the reach of misinformation is massive. Particularly Fox News. Put them in the equation, and the reach of misinformation in America on a daily basis jumps from 1% to at least 30%.

Curious to know your thoughts on this. Thanks.

If you could rearrange how education works in America, what kinds of changes would you implement? A lot of folks seem to want something different in place of what we have but find it hard to articulate specifics. Please identify a problem 'and' a solution.

Internships in EdTech or Curriculum Design

Hi everyone. I’m a sophomore majoring in math and education with data science minor. I have some experiences doing research in education and analyzing data, and I’m looking for internships that focus on content design in education (games, LMS, summer schools, etc.). Every internship in education I could find so far was only about tutoring/TA-related, but I’d love to something like researching, designing, and testing educational products. Please recommend me somewhere that offers such internships, I would very much appreciate it!

In a world of AI and free information like Wikipedia, we need to take another look at how higher education is set up

So much of higher education being force fed information you can find online, and then being able to memorize that information and regurgitate it on exams. It worked 200 years ago when access to information was difficult when you’re learning something and when you’re applying it as well.

But the world changed at a rapid pace. Anything you can learn from a textbook, you can also read about online. If something doesn’t make sense, there are hundreds of videos on youtube explaining exactly what didn’t make sense to you instead of a professor explaining vague details to hundreds of students at once.

The world changed, but education didn’t. We still follow the same archaic process from hundreds of years ago and don’t utilize the advances in technology to make education more effective.

Instead of strict schedules and forced attendance to classes where a lecturer just reads bolded lines from the textbook to hundreds of students at once, we need to embrace the new methodology. Define exams for each class and let kids learn on their own. Give them guidance on what they need to learn. But also give them a chance to learn as much as they can on their own and THEN get a human professor involved. Make interactions between professors and students personal, even if short. A student should come to a professor with pointed questions about what they don’t understand instead of a professor repeating information to a large group that they could have read up on.

This whole thing needs a new approach.

STEM, ABM, and HUMMS? What do I take?

For context, I am a 15-year-old grade 10 student who is totally clueless about what they are going to pursue. I want to be financially successful and financially stable… but I also want to pursue my passions. Growing up, I’ve always been interested in studying animals, plant life, prehistoric creatures, and how they interact with one another. I even wanted to be a paleontologist for a very long time… or even an ecologist—since I was so interested and fascinated by how everything interacted… And then around when I was in 6th to 8th grade, my interests began to shift more into the humanities. I was interested in history, philosophies/beliefs, how humanity and civilizations came to be… and the differences of everyone and how they were brought up and how they interacted and what happened for them to react that way… And now I’m interested in business because… welll… it’s the most practical thing I can do… but I don’t want to be a corporate slave… and I know I have it in me to find a way to thrive—but I know the corporate and business track would probably make me financially secure but emotionally exhausted and repressed. So… for the older folks there… what is your advice or like question?

Nearly Half of San Diego Unified Schools May Be ‘Underutilized’ (Feb. 2026)

San Diego Unified may have “underutilized” about 47 percent of district schools during the 2024-25 school year, according to a report obtained by Voice of San Diego.

Over the past decade, enrollment decline has buffeted schools across the region. San Diego Unified has been hit particularly hard. As of last school year, district schools had lost about 16,000 students, a nearly 12 percent drop.

The trend has the power to reshape the educational landscape, potentially draining funds or even forcing school closures or consolidations.

The report continues inside the link:

How many hours do you chase AI issues?

My wife is an educator in France. She is spending 2-3 hours a week reviewing work, investigating its source, and talking with students/admin/parents about AI integrity issues.

I am curious if this is the average today, or if she is lucky that it is not the double? I have seen some other noise on social media that makes 2-3 hours sound lucky.

So,what i wanna know is that if those majors will be limiting for me to get general Master degree like Electrical engineering in other countries? Can i also still get normal Electrical engineer related jobs with EE smart grid degree. I've asked AI and it said it'd be fine and looked up in University's info but nothing specific is stated so. AI Policy in Universities is Ruining the Educational Experience

My daughter is obsessed with writing, and has been studying, journalling, and writing fiction since she was a young child. Now that she is in college, she writes original submissions and yet, is frequently accused of using AI when she has not done so. She has an extensive vocabulary, loves m-dashes, etc. She is less often accused of it if she is tired and makes mistakes. If she fights it, then professors become vengeful and petty. So, she can only get a good grade if she's exhausted or otherwise impaired. University is teaching her that she can't succeed unless she pretends to be more stupid and less competent than she really is. This sickens me.

She will graduate soon. I am very angry and disgusted that we have paid thousands of dollars every semester for this experience - accusations without evidence and petty, vengeful, lazy professors. She has attended multiple colleges, and the experience is always the same.

I've recommended that she create as much evidence as she can when creating and submitting content, but it's still always the same problem - if you prove the professor is wrong then they become mean and petty and grade more harshly. She risks her grade without evidence and risks her grade if she stands up for herself. Following the rules and turning in good work doesn't help.

The only thing my daughter is learning is college is that life is ultimately unfair. The only way to survive is to tiptoe around crazy, psycho people who hold power over you. Results are arbitrary and are not affected by whether you follow the rules or do good work. In fact, good work, intelligence and competence are punished accordingly.

What is your experience with AI in university?

What real problems do teachers face that educational apps often fail to solve?

Hi everyone,

I’m a game developer exploring the idea of building a small educational app prototype, mainly as a learning exercise and to better understand the EdTech space.

Before building anything, I’d like to understand real classroom pain points from people with experience in education or educational technology. Many educational apps look good on paper but don’t get used long-term.

From your experience: • What problems do teachers actually need software to solve? • What features are often missing or poorly implemented in educational apps? • What makes an app realistic to use in a real classroom (time, setup, monitoring, assessment, etc.)?

I’m not selling anything and I don’t have a product yet—just trying to avoid building something that isn’t useful in practice. Any insights are appreciated.

Boomers Backed Public School Teaching of Critical Thinking Back in the Day. What Changed?

How do the Boomers in your life explain their complete 180\* turn from wanting their kids to think and reason independently in the 1970s-1980s to now believing that “someone important with top secret information and knowledge” should be allowed to determine what is truthful, honest and believable? They even pushed local school boards to teach this. My fellow early Gen X cohorts, at least, were taught to question and challenge every single thing in school AND in our churches. What happened to cause this complete reversal?

What happened to teaching actual digital literacy skills in elementary instead of just device management?

Been thinking about this a lot lately. When I was in school we learned typing, how to use word processors, basic troubleshooting, file management. Now I watch elementary kids who can navigate Instagram perfectly but don't know how to create a folder or attach a document to an email.

We've got a whole generation that's "tech native" but only for consumption not creation or productivity. They can swipe and tap but ask them to format a document or organize files and they're completely lost.

Feels like curriculum shifted to "here's how to behave online safely" (which is important) but forgot to teach the actual skills they'll need for any job ever. Or is this just my district?

What are other schools doing for digital literacy that's actually practical?

Neurodivergent CS student building an interactive math learning platform. Looking for educator and student feedback

Hi r/Education,

I’m a computer science student who has struggled with math throughout my academic life. Despite doing well in most subjects, university-level math has been a constant obstacle for me. I’ve had to repeat multiple courses, and traditional study methods never really worked with the way my brain processes information.

Over time I noticed something interesting: whenever I built my own tools to support learning, I improved much faster. Creating structured, interactive systems helped me understand concepts that textbooks and static exercises couldn’t.

Because of that experience, a friend and I recently started working on a project aimed at making math learning more intuitive and interactive. The idea is to combine several tools that are usually scattered across different websites into a single platform:

  • interactive visualizations and graphing
  • step by step problem solving
  • guided learning workflows
  • customizable practice problem generation

Our goal is not to replace teachers, but to create a supplemental tool that supports different learning styles. Especially for students who struggle with traditional approaches.

Our focus is primarily on tools that help students explore and understand math concepts, rather than on creating full traditional courses.

We’re currently building an early version and opening a waitlist for people who want to try it when it’s ready.

I’m posting here because I’d really like feedback from actual educators and students:

  • What tools or features do you feel are missing from current math education technology?
  • What makes a math platform genuinely helpful rather than just flashy?
  • From a teacher’s perspective, what would make a tool like this useful in the classroom?

Any thoughts or constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Submission Statement:

This post is relevant to r/Education because it seeks discussion and feedback about educational technology for math learning from the perspective of both students and educators. The purpose is not to advertise a product, but to gather informed opinions about what makes digital learning tools genuinely useful in real educational settings.

Only finished 3/4 tests on GED, I have the last test in 2 days

Super stupid question here lol. I am applying to a technical college, and I am filling out student aid forms. On one of the forms it asks if you have a high school degree or equivalent. The specific program I have applied for only requires report on scores for the Language Arts test, so I stupidly thought it meant I could click yes on the GED option. Will I get in trouble because I have not received the full credential? Or do Tech Colleges even care if I get the full credential in 2 days?

AI gives my students instant writing feedback and lets them revise, something I never had time to do for 95 kids

After 22 years teaching middle school ELA, my biggest frustration has always been the same: kids turn in writing, I take two weeks to grade it, and by the time they get feedback they've mentally moved on. The learning moment is gone.

So I built something. It's a literacy app where students read passages based on topics they actually care about, answer comprehension questions, then respond to an open-ended prompt. Here's where it gets interesting. The AI gives them specific, actionable feedback on their writing, and they revise and resubmit. Then they get more feedback. It's a loop, not a one-and-done assignment.

One student has completed 26 articles so far and his mom says he actually looks forward to it.

I'm not here to sell anything.. It's free right now. I'm genuinely curious what other educators think. Is this something you'd actually use with your students? What concerns would you have?

Is anyone else’s tech stack getting "too loud"?

I’m finally hit a wall with ""app fatigue"" last semester. I was trying to manage my classes with about a dozen different ""bullshit"" AI apps—everything from random summary tools to niche transcription services—and I realized I was spending more time fighting tab-switching fatigue than actually grading. This year, I’ve consolidated my entire feedback loop down to just Canvas, Notion, and Willow Voice. Before I landed on this setup, I experimented with other tools like Wispr; it was great for mobile integration, but for the heavy-duty classroom feedback I need on my Mac, it just didn't fit the flow as well as I'd hoped. I also tried the standard built-in dictation and Otter.ai, but they either cut me off mid-thought or were too ""stingy"" with their free plans to be practical for grading 100+ essays a week. Willow has been the only one that handles technical terminology without flinching, letting me narrate personalized feedback straight into the gradebook. It’s been a massive relief to stop being a ""software manager"" and go back to just being a teacher. What’s your minimal tech stack for the classroom this year? Are you guys still trying out every new AI tool that drops, or have you found a few reliable ones that actually move the needle?

How Come Teachers Don't Use AI More?

Saw a recent study saying only 1/3 of teachers use AI daily or weekly. And that those who did use AI frequently reported massive time-savings (~ 6 hours per week). Was surprised both by how significant the time savings were, and how low the rate of usage was among teachers. Curious: how come more teachers don’t use AI frequently? Steep learning curve? Perception? Would love to hear from teachers / people experienced in the space (or just generally anyone with a perspective on this).

Keep in mind - I’m from Silicon Valley, where basically everyone I know uses AI daily. So definitely don’t have great perspective on the rest of the US / the world. Hoping to get some insights here.

What if you had an AI buddy in lectures that writes notes while you listen?

Ocepa AI

Ocepa AI: an app that takes notes for you during lectures so you can actually focus.

Ocepa AI is basically like having a smart friend in class who takes notes for you.

When you press Start Lecture, the app listens to the teacher through your phone’s microphone. As the lecture goes on, it automatically turns what the teacher is saying into text, picks out the most important points, definitions, and key ideas, and organizes them into clear notes for you.

So instead of rushing to write everything down, you can just focus on listening and understanding.

After class, everything is saved in your account, so you can come back anytime to review the notes, read the full transcript, and even ask the AI questions about that lecture.

[Elementary] What traits separate the popular kids from the outcasts?

When I was in elementary school, I always felt like a third-wheel. I was following around a group of "friends" but I always felt like whether I was there or not made no difference, I could've been invisible or non-existent and the "friend" group would've carried on.

Yet some kids were the popular ones, whether they knew it or not. When they walked, the friend group followed. They set the pace. They just had a magnetic presence about them. Some where smart, some dumb. Some fat some skinny. Some conventionally attractive and some not.

It makes me wonder if there's anything that I can do to help my young-elementary school sons be those group leaders, the ones other kids flock to, or at least valued members of their peer group. My 2nd grader seems to not be having much luck with friends, from what he talks about at least. But I'm not sure why. He's clean, athletic, not disfigured in any way, has a modern gelled haircut, has modern clothes with popular themes like pokemon.

I just want my kids to have the best chance at social success because feeling like an outcast sucks.

I don't quite know how to phrase this question but what are your thoughts on control in education? I feel like teachers should have the most control and students should have the least not because they don't deserve a say but because in adult life, so much 'won't' be in their control.

I mean isn't that the ongoing beef these days; that less is in one's control than ever? I sincerely believe that in order for kids to learn some of the fundamentals, some elements 'must' be mandatory, non-negotiable, etcetera. The fact that this seems to be slippping away from education is killing it in my opinion. It's also producing young adults who think various aspects of functioning in life are 'optional. Things like showing up to work on time--or indeed showing up at all.

I know it would be less lucrative for all the folks marketing crap to teachers, schools and educators but we maybe need to get back to basics. Our reality as humans isn't changing so much that tossing the rulebook is serving many students all that well. Can the system be salvaged or will it need to be scrapped alltogether? That's my question. Moreover, without structure, discipline--as in consequences for disruptive and other behaviors--and respect for the teachers and the process, what's the point?

How Is AI Changing Education Right Now?

AI tools can analyze how students learn and tailor lessons to their pace and style. Apps like adaptive learning platforms help students focus on areas they struggle with while advancing faster in topics they grasp quickly.

AI-powered tutors are available 24/7, offering explanations, answering questions, and providing feedback instantly.

AI can create practice exercises, summaries, and even explain complex topics in simple language. This makes learning materials more accessible and dynamic.

AI can predict which students might struggle and suggest interventions early, making education more proactive.

What's the first thing getting cut from your school technology budget this year?

Our superintendent just announced 15% cuts across the board for next year. Haven't seen the final numbers yet but already getting nervous about what's going to disappear.

Probably losing our video editing licenses which is going to piss off the media arts teachers. Might have to cut back on some of the subject specific platforms too. Definitely not touching internet bandwidth or device refresh cycle because that would be a disaster.

Curious what other districts are trimming. Are you cutting software subscriptions? Putting off hardware upgrades? Reducing tech staff?

Also wondering if anyone's found decent free alternatives that don't completely suck. Seems like everything either costs a fortune or is barely functional.

Need advice for University selection!

Hello! I am currently in the final semester of my undergraduate degree in Journalism and Mass Communication, and I have been applying to universities in the UK for an MSc in Digital Marketing—namely the University of Manchester, University of Bath, Queen Mary University of London, University of Birmingham, London Business School, and the University of Strathclyde (in no particular order). I have a strong academic background, maintaining a GPA of 3.6+ since high school, and I have two published research papers in digital marketing and BPL-related research. I have also worked on short-term marketing projects for major brands such as Suzuki.

Additionally, I have strong English communication skills and will be receiving an IELTS exemption.

Regarding finances, my parents will be funding my living expenses (they also fully financed my undergraduate degree), and I will be taking a student loan for tuition fees as a step toward becoming financially independent (this was a personal decision, not something they asked me to do).

My question is: if I do receive acceptance letters from all of these universities (which I know is unlikely), which one should I choose? I am considering both reputation and the availability of career opportunities. Any advice, opinions, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I’m about to choose my major

Hello, I’m about to choose my major, and I’m heavily interested in engineering. More specifically, I’m choosing between robotics and energy engineering (possibly civil engineering, but less so). Overall, I’m leaning much more toward robotics and energy

Why? Because I believe AI and large language models will require significantly more energy in the future, and over time they’ll also need more and more physical embodiments (robots, infrastructure, hardware).

On the other hand, I’m also considering medical studies—more specifically dentistry. Many people would say this path is obvious in my situation, since about 65% of my family members are doctors and my mom is a dentist. I’m aware that this would probably be the easiest route for me if I manage to get into medical school and finish my studies. However, I know I don’t want to do that job.

I’m manually skilled and would likely be a good dentist from a technical standpoint, but I simply cannot picture myself doing that work or enjoying it. So while it’s technically a possibility, it’s not something I’m genuinely interested in.

For more context, I’m from Eastern Europe. Most universities here are free (around 95%), except for private ones, which aren’t very good anyway. The main expenses—especially for Americans to understand—are rent (either shared with friends or alone), food (which is partially subsidized by the state), and small fees for basic school needs.

My question for you is: what would you choose in my situation, and why?

Thank you for your time....

Hi teachers! I built a free tool to help generate tests and quizzes effortlessly

Hi Teachers!

I'm a developer who has always loved to teach, so I built a tool to help teachers, tutors and creators to build quizzes, tests, and exams without wasting hours creating and formatting to suit your school's platform.

With simpltests.com you can:

Create unlimited tests for free

Generate questions with AI

Export to Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, Kahoot, Google Forms, Slides, and more

Why we built it

Most educators spend 1–3 hours per test, hunting for questions online, formatting them manually, and fighting LMS imports (QTI, ZIP, CSV, etc). It’s slow, repetitive, and technically annoying.

We wanted something that would:

✔ reduce busywork

✔ integrate with tools teachers already use

✔ make assessments easier, not harder

Here's our Core Features

AI Question Generation

Describe a topic — get MCQs, T/F, or written questions instantly (more question formats coming soon!)

Unlimited Tests (Free)

Create as many tests as you want. No paywall.

LMS Export Support

One-click export for:

  • Canvas (QTI)
  • Moodle
  • Blackboard
  • Google Forms
  • Google Slides
  • Kahoot
  • (more coming)

Credit-Based Pricing for AI

Only pay for AI generation — manual test creation stays free forever.

Feedback Welcome!

If you’re a teacher or creator:

We’d love to hear what would make this indispensable for you. :)

Purpose of changing math?

I have a 2nd and 4th grader in GA, USA. The school started this new curriculum the state mandated. They use area models (boxes) and other new concepts. I was taught from Saxon math textbooks. What is the purpose of this and will they ever learn the traditional way? I was told by the teachers that they would not be learning traditional math at all this year. It’s driving me nuts.

Is it possible to get into a good uni after high school with 0 STEM background? (read below)

I was recently thinking about my accomplishments throughout my school career and I've never been good or liked STEM. I've always been more inclined into humanities and all those non-number related stuff. But I also realized that I've never been called smart or thought of myself as smart. In fact, I was always pretty dumb and I think its because I'm not good at STEM. STEM smart is like you're actually smart its all you and you brought yourself here with sheer hard work or talent. Humanities has so many paths to success and if you're good at it, you're just "creative" or "talky" its like fake smart.

And recently, I heard a bunch of my friends who are both really good at STEM and are set to go to really good unis (Michigan and Berkeley) talking about some really difficult looking engineering stuff. I didn't understand any of it and I lost my mind I felt so stupid and inferior and I couldn't sleep that night and the following nights. I already finished high school but I took IB and got a pretty disappointing score of 28 (English A HL, Economics HL, Business HL, Math AI SL, Physics SL, Mandarin ab initio). What I'm doing now during the two years I have before I go to uni is that I'm learning all of the hard AP and SAT stuff for STEM like calc BC physics C etc to get into a good uni like my friends did and for my own mind to rest easy knowing that I am capable and I proved it because I'm literally losing sleep but I'm also worried that this is just delusional to just 180 my entire academic build around after I finished highschool.

Frankly I hate STEM but I can't go on knowing that I'm not smart and not good at it. I also don't want to end up going to a no-name university. That's 90% of the reason I'm pushing myself so hard. But I just want to know if this is even possible in the first place.

Grading time

Question for the group - how many hours do you spend grading an average formative assessment(homework, if you grade it) and end of unit summative assessments? Per assessment, or if easier, average per week?

If possible please share the grade level, content area and country 🙏

Teacher Interviews

Hi, I am looking to become a middle or high school English teachers. I am almost done with my PACE application. I will be getting my statement of eligibility that allows me to go on interviews in about a week.

I have questions about the interview process as someone with no teaching experience. I called the South Carolina Department of Education for some resources and of course they didn't have any.

Does anyone have any tips about going on a job interview for teaching with absolutely zero teaching experience?

Course Hero and CliffsNotes flooding with commercial spam — moderation concerns

Hi everyone,

I want to bring attention to something concerning I’ve noticed across two major educational platforms: Course Hero and CliffsNotes. These sites are widely used by students and educators for academic support, but when reviewing their public question pages and sitemaps, I repeatedly found commercial posts offering paid services like Google reviews, Trustpilot reviews, social media followers, private account access, and other clearly promotional services that have nothing to do with learning.

Examples of problematic threads (all visible publicly):

coursehero.com/tutors-problems/Business-Other/82888204-What-Businesses-Should-Know-About-Buying-Sitejabber-Reviews-Buy/

coursehero.com/tutors-problems/Business-Other/81794625-Buy-Trustpilot-Reviews-Boost-Credibility-amp-Skyrocket-Sales/

cliffsnotes.com/sitemap/cliffs-questions/business-other/2026-02

cliffsnotes.com/sitemap/cliffs-questions/business-other/2026-01

These don’t look like genuine academic questions. They promote commercial services and, to me, function more like spam. I also tried reporting some of them, and my experience was that only a few got removed, while similar spam keeps appearing month after month.

Has anyone else seen this pattern? Are there better ways to report or flag such content so these educational sites can clean up their moderation? Happy to provide screenshots or specific examples.

Curious what others think, especially educators and students who use these platforms regularly.

Education careers beyond teaching?

Hello,

I am a recent college graduate (double majored in English and History with a 3.95 GPA, if that’s relevant) and am interested in pursuing a career in education. At community college I worked as both a clerical assistant and a peer mentor. I found the work really fulfilling, since I was providing support to other students with their educational goals and helping to plan and coordinate events, outreach efforts, and other activities which also helped current and prospective students.

I am interested in pursuing a career in education which involves this kind of work—not the teaching end of education—but am not sure how secure this kind of work is. So I thought I’d inquire: is the non-teaching side of education a good path for careers? Between the integration of AI into so many white collar professions and the precarious state of education funding, I am concerned that these sorts of roles may not be viable long-term. I don’t have any interest in being a teacher, but I still would love to work in education. Can anyone provide any insights into what options might be available to me?

(Additionally, what graduate programs align with non-teaching educational roles? Education MA programs seem catered to teaching, so would someone wanting to work in education in a different capacity benefit from something different, like Public Policy or Business Administration?)

Do some schools just not care if a parent loses their job due to the student being suspended or homebound instruction?

I work with families who have students with disabilities. I've had five parents now be at risk for losing their jobs when their student is out "on homebound instruction pending placement" One of them actually did lose their job.

This makes it so the parent needs to stay home and watch their kid complete online tutoring. Many parents I work with don't just have a random family member available for childcare.

I'm also a former teacher so I know school isn't child care. Institutionally and systemically though, what are parents supposed to do? The school seems almost gleeful or untroubled by the fact people are losing their jobs. I couldn't do it. I'd find a way to have in-school suspension. It could never be on my conscience to force someone to have to figure out how to survive. Like... We're basically forcing the parents into that position. And then we make awful comments on people "living off the system" when we put them there with our thoughtless accounting of the domino effect.

I havent found a law yet that keeps kids in school, but the financial burden and loss that parents experience is so high that I'm just shocked that schools don't seem to care.

What a levels should I take

Hi all, I’m a high school student in the UK and I’m hoping to eventually make it to Cambridge University. I am currently predicted grade 9s in all subjects except English, and I would like to take Computer science at uni. However, I don’t know what a levels to take to achieve this. Their website says minimum A*A*A qualifications and that maths and further maths is required. It also says physics is highly recommended. Do I think about taking 4 A levels (maths, further maths, physics, computer science) and potentially risk lower grades or take 3 and have less qualifications, as they prioritise physics a level over computer science a level. I know it’s early to be making uni decisions, but I really need a plan of what to do, especially as I want to get into a top university. Thanks.

Given how hard it is to get some American kids to believe education is important and actually counts for something, what kinds of folks do you think will want to persue teaching as a career 5 or more years from now?

Most LAUSD board races have no challengers for 2026. What does that mean for public education in Los Angeles?

LAUSD is the largest school district in the U.S. with an elected school board, yet the board races in the 2026 cycle currently have one or zero declared challengers.

Curious how common this is in other large districts and what people think it signals about governance and civic participation.

Question about academic enrichment

We have a 6th grader and she is doing well in school. So far she has high A’s this year. She has ADHD and has majorly stepped up her effort this year.

We know she’s capable of being in accelerated classes. She enjoys math the most and picks it up very quickly but does even better in English Language on standardized tests. She doesn’t quite make the map cut off for these programs but she is close.

It seems like we need to get her ahead of the class a bit to get her higher percentiles on map scores to qualify? Currently she does IXL’s or Mathia for school. Should we try tutoring?

What methods are parents using to help their children reach their potential? It seems like every child of a teacher in our area has kids in higher level classes. We are involved in checking and studying with our child as well. What is working for everyone? Thanks in advance.

Looking forward to getting my MS & BS in Psychology…

Honestly not looking forward to being in any more student debt than what im already in but ik thats not that likely.. Wondering if anybody has other options or even opinions on this “Capella University” ive been looking into. The type of courses im looking for are online accelerated courses, I currently hold an HS Diploma and looking to step into a career i actually would enjoy instead of wasting time with dead-end jobs i legit just hate working…

I’d like to eventually open up my own practice and give back to the people of my community.. Im a STRONG believer of therapy even if it is having someone to talk to…

Im 100% fully committed to this decision and i honestly feel ive wasted enough of my time and that im behind😫

If you are where i want to get or know someone who is i wouldnt mind any tips, tricks, emails, whatever information that has to do with starting from high school diploma to then eventually reaching a MS degree..

Thank you lovely humans in advance & hopefully your january has been better then mine was…

Can mixing rhythm, songs, and quizzes help people learn?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been wondering about something and wanted to get your thoughts. Do sound and rhythm actually help people learn better?

For example, what if you mixed a quiz game with something like Rhythm Heaven, where students have to answer questions in rhythm or follow musical patterns to learn concepts? Instead of just reading or memorizing, they’d be actively listening, timing, and reacting.

I’m especially thinking about kids: would combining quizzes with songs or rhythm-based gameplay make learning more fun or effective? Or would it just be distracting?

Has anyone seen research, games, or apps that already do something like this? Curious to hear opinions or experiences.
