Online Bachelor in Europe?

Hello everyone,

New here and researching my options as a 31 yold who's interested in getting a bachelor's degree via distance/remote program.

Preferably in Europe because I assume outside of Europe means a hella lot paperwork, and if I must showup for exams physically, it would be a mess to plan.

Does anybody have guidance, specific programs and universities for me? Anybody who went through a program like this and has advice?

I never understood why there's so little options for this.

English speaking summer camps

Hi everyone,

My son will be starting high school in the US this fall. He’s not a native English speaker, so we’re considering sending him to a preparatory English language camp in Florida before the school year begins.

Does anyone have experience with similar programs? Are they worth it in terms of improving language skills and helping with adjustment to school life in the US? Also, could you recommend any reliable camps or share what to look out for when choosing one?

Thanks in advance!

Texas Tech bans teaching and researching LGBTQ+ topics

Texas Tech is banning teaching and research related to sexual orientation and gender identity by June 15, including replacing course materials on gender and sexuality and banning degrees or certificates centered on those topics.

Faculty and students are calling it censorship and a direct attack on academic freedom. This won’t just hit LGBTQ+ studies. It affects history, sociology, public health, education, and more.

At what point does “curriculum oversight” become outright political censorship in higher education?

My brother (20M) failed 12th Commerce for the 2nd time. He seems to have zero interest in studies and I'm lost on how to guide him

My younger brother (20) just failed his 12th-grade commerce exams for the second time. He has historically struggled with academics, having only passed his 10th-grade exams on his second attempt.

Last year, he passed with the bare minimum percentage, but I encouraged him to reappear to improve his score for the sake of his future. Unfortunately, he has now failed entirely. Whenever I've asked him about his goals in the past, he insists that he wants to study, but his actions never seem to match his words. I'm starting to feel like he either has zero interest in academics or is struggling with deep-seated avoidance and a lack of motivation.

I'm unsure what to say to him at this point. I want to be supportive, but I don't know how to guide him anymore or what his next steps should be. I also feel a sense of responsibility, as I didn't do enough to foster his interest in education when we were younger.

Any advice or opinions are welcome.

Is your school cringe?

How other schools in the 21st century are approaching things like pep rallies, senior picnics/activities, etc? My school seems stuck in 1998 and thinks our kids actually care about these things. Participation is LOW - kids dont dress up for homecoming week (the themes are lame and - they don't care), half of the 1500 students are sitting during the pep rally (cause its lame and - they don't care) and many of the seniors are frustrated that they're required to participate in the cliche graduation/spirit week events because- yes, its lame and they don't care. But our admin and a certain group of teachers are still pushing for these events - disrupting class and asking more of teachers in the process.

Do your kids care about these things? How are you events themed that help with that? What are you doing instead?

History teachers! How many lessons do you usually spend on a history topic (e.g. Middle Ages)?

Hi everyone,

How many lessons (or hours) do you usually spend on one topic or chapter, for example the Middle Ages?

If possible, I’d also love to know:

  • Does the time depend on how difficult the topic is?
  • Are there certain chapters where you feel you need more time?

Thanks a lot in advance!

About to lose my mind

Ok, so basically I had this super bad depression, and my grades tanked on Canvas. It says I’m failing everything, but when I checked my midterm grades, they weren’t as bad as I thought. I also thought I had missed classes for a whole month, when it turned out to be only two weeks, which is still bad but not as bad as a whole month. I was told that my final grade might not be as bad as I think, and it helped calm me down, but I still feel like I might be cooked. Can someone help me understand this? Also, my teachers use different grading scales. (Also had a similar situation before i transferred thought i failed but turned out to have way better grades than i thought )

Teaching profession gender imbalance is getting ridiculous

Been looking at teacher demographics lately and the numbers are wild. In many districts you'll find around 85-95% female teachers, which creates interesting dynamics for advancement opportunities. What's weird is that women dominate the classroom and most administrative positions below principal level - department heads, curriculum coordinators, instructional coaches - basically follow the same pattern since there's such a small male candidate pool.

But then something shifts at superintendent and district leadership levels. The gender balance completely changes despite women making up nearly the entire workforce below. It's a strange phenomenon that doesn't get discussed much in education circles, probably because it makes people uncomfortable regardless of which side they're on.

As someone who works in management myself (different field), I find the whole thing fascinating from organizational perspective. When you have such extreme gender distribution at entry level but completely different ratios at executive level, there's definitely some systemic factors at play that nobody wants to examine too closely.

US higher education has about 69 program suspensions nationally since 2024. Most people scroll past this stat. They should not.

A program suspension is what a closure looks like 12 months before it happens.

The sequence is predictable. A school pauses admissions to a program, stops enrolling new students, and tells current students to complete their credits and transfer. The school calls it a suspension. What it often is, is a closure on a delayed timeline.

69 program suspensions across 45 states. Iowa alone saw 10 program eliminations in a single week across three public universities following a Board of Regents mandated review. Cornell College dropped 11 majors in one decision.

Staff layoffs are the most visible actions. Program suspensions are the most predictive one.

Watch the suspensions. They tell you where the closures are coming.

What are your thoughts?

With the entire iran-israel situation thats still going on, my boards were cancelled. After that, i was forced to give a WHOLE 37 exams CONSECUTIVELY, barely getting any breaks, sometimes doing 3 exams a day, and some of em are mocks, some are evidences, some are midterms. along with all the exams, we still have had to study the subjects themselves, so we're all baically half dead on the inside. Yes, my question in the title is my main point, but, i have to say, why am i even trying anymore? Just venting out my feelings a bit here, hope no one minds too much

Personalization in Learning [EdTech]

Hi, I m a high schooler and I found learning interesting only when I included visuals, diagrams, flow charts in it. That's why I started using NotebookLM. I loved its Animation part (until it became paid & absurdly costly) and most of its features were behind Paywall.

First, let i tell u how it helps all:

  • to a student -> it simplifies learning
  • to a teacher -> it makes notes creation and lesson prep easier
  • to a writer -> it could generate detailed overview on a topic before u start writing
  • and it made a new category as well -> online teachers who just upload animations made in notebooklm.

However, its benefit to a student & a teacher has been decreased significantly due to paywall (its premium features are expensive though limited) and has a free tier with generous limit of features that feels TOO BASIC.

So, I tried to built a cheaper version of the app which retains all the core features of the app as well as it can generate notes on any topic, from scratch in minutes, which u can export into well formatted PDF form.

I'd like to know what are the specific parts of NotebookLM everyone is frustrated with.

What actually makes the biggest difference in a student’s success?

There are so many factors in education—teachers, curriculum, motivation, environment, resources—but it’s not always clear what has the strongest impact on student outcomes in real life.

From your experience, what do you think matters most when it comes to helping students succeed academically and personally?

Textbooks becoming AI generated and digital based

I went down a midnight rabbit hole of who makes our textbooks. I ended up in Epstein’s circle. Private equity has merged with tech giants as of Feb 2026 and they intend to mainstream textbooks to an online, AI generated process.

The people behind 1 of the biggest companies producing k-college textbooks is quite interesting.

I’ve attached an article.

*The link is relevant because it fully explains the evolution of a family owned printing company to a private equity power house owned by the same people who control Hollywood, shared flights with Epstein, and plan to go full AI with learning.

Is your school network helping students learn? Or pulling them away?

Most classrooms today run on browsers, but that means distractions, unsafe content, and cyber risks are just one click away.
Schools are turning towards web content filtering for blocking website and guided access. They can now filter websites by category, enforce policies based on users or devices, and keep protection active even outside campus.
This helps in creating a safe, focused, and compliant learning environment for students while still allowing access to educational content..

Full read here: Web filtering for schools in detail.

Students don’t need less internet. They need a safer, smarter version of it.

Reggio Inspired Elementary (K-5)

I’m seeking guidance from any educators or parents that have experience with Reggio-Emilia inspired grade schools.  I have an opportunity to send my child, who is just finishing Kinder at public school, to a Reggio based school that goes up to grade 5 in Houston.  There is a lot of information on child outcomes from Reggio kids in pre-K or K transitioning into more traditional education systems but lacking anything for older children that would re-enter public school after 5th grade, going into middle school.  I would also be interested to hear if there is a more natural transition point to move out of Reggio inspired school that could be before 5th grade.

Also, any information on how kids do in these types of programs for Gr 1-5 would be great.  The school did a great job selling us on the benefits that Reggio gives kids but they are also trying to sell admission to the school.

Greatly appreciated!

state government bringing political groups into schools - this seems problematic

so my state just made deal with this conservative political organization to start clubs in high schools and universities. they're using public funding to support group that has pretty extreme views in places that should stay neutral

i think this crosses line because schools shouldn't be pushing any political agenda, especially ones that can make certain students feel unwelcome based on their identity. we already have issues with student mental health and this kind of messaging could make things worse for kids who are already struggling

public schools should be safe space for everyone, not place where political movements recruit members. seems like violation of separation between government and partisan politics to me. anyone else seeing this happening in their area

Key Things About How We Structure Learning in Schools Here

Been seeing loads of chat recently about what gets taught in classrooms and who decides these things, so thought I'd share some background on how our education system actually works

**We follow what's called the modern liberal arts approach** - basically from reception through to year 13, kids are meant to cover literacy, numeracy, sciences, history, arts, music, PE and some choice subjects. These core areas developed over decades in the 1800s and really solidified by 1900 or so. If I suddenly decided to teach French grammar instead of English in my year 6 class, there'd be quite the uproar and rightly so

**There isn't one single national system running everything** - we've got loads of different systems all working alongside each other. Every region does its own thing, plus there are separate systems for overseas territories, military schools, indigenous communities and more. While the core subjects stay similar everywhere (those fundamentals I mentioned), there can be pretty big differences even between neighbouring areas

**How much say teachers get in curriculum choices often depends on historical factors** - it's not a perfect pattern but generally regions that had major political upheavals tend to have stronger central control over what gets taught. About 19 areas fall into this category where curriculum decisions happen more at the top level rather than locally

The whole thing's way more complex than most people realise and there's proper historical reasons for why it all developed this way

Is the UK moving in the right direction with phone-free school days?

I recently read about how schools in the UK have banned phones, but it seems a bit more layered than that. From what I understand, it’s not really a full ban on bringing phones to school. It’s more like students can still bring them in, but once the school day starts, they either need to be switched off and put away or stored in lockers or pouches until the end of the day. I can see the reasoning behind it. It probably helps with socialisation and reduces constant distractions. But I also get why it doesn’t sit well with some students. Having their phone taken away from them might feel like losing a bit of independence. Curious as to how students and teachers feel about this policy?

How to not be stressed with high school scheduling

So we start scheduling next week and im stressed I won't get the classes I want. I understand im a freshman and will be the last grade to schedule but its the fact there's no preference based on grades or even really first come, its by our social studies class so if someone is the last class they just get what ever. The classes I want are AP Chem, AP Calc, Independent art, DC College Alg/trig, AP Lit, AP World Civilization. In that order since my school only offers one class period for an AP class. Its also the fact that they let Anyone take an AP class.

Requesting course material for friend in Malawi

Hello! This is a strange request, so I'll give a little bit of backstory. Feel free to skip if not interested.

My parents before they had me had gone to Malawi as part of my mom's bachelor degree in medicine, during which she'd met a whole bunch of people but one of them was a bright young kid. This kid is now in his 30s, and he's found a way to contact us again which was a very emotional time for my mom especially. Nowadays he's dabbling in agriculture consultancy. They want to go visit him again in Malawi later this year, and he'd like a laptop and we decided to patch one up and give him one of our own.

Internet is very very limited where he lives, from what I can tell he can only really access low-data resources from his phone. He comes from a place where they must farm for their own survival and where clean water isn't a guarantee. We'd like to help him by putting a bunch of useful course material on the laptop before we give it to him. He's interested in the following topics:

- Business
- Entrepeneurship
- Agriculture/land revitalization
- Microsoft Excel/Word
- Professional writing

If anyone happens to have online material on any of these subjects, or other subjects that could be useful to their situation like water purification with limited resources, we'd be very grateful to receive some so we can send it to him! Links to where such documents can be found would also be helpful, though I don't know what's useful and what isn't.

Not to get sappy, but you can kinda see it as a form of charity except instead of money you're giving information :P

Thanks!

every piece of phonics reading advice parents get at home, and why most of it doesn't work

I teach and I have a 5yo. That combination has made it genuinely hard to be around at school pickup when this subject comes up. I found some things that parents are actually being told versus what the research on phonics reading instruction actually supports.

"Just read to them every day" - valuable for vocabulary, comprehension, and loving books. Not a substitute for explicit decoding instruction. Reading to a child and teaching a child to read are two different activities and treating them as interchangeable is how kids get to second grade unable to sound out words they've never seen before.

"Point at words while you read" - marginally better than nothing. Does not constitute systematic phonics instruction. A child learning to associate the shape of a word with its sound is pattern recognition, not decoding. These collapse quickly once they see words they haven't memorized.

"Use flashcards for sight words" - this one specifically frustrates me because it explicitly teaches memorization over decoding. Some high frequency words need to be known on sight eventually but leading with memorization before phonics foundation is backwards and a lot of research says so.

"Apps that kids enjoy independently" - engagement is not a literacy outcome. A child can complete two hundred app lessons enthusiastically and have a patchy phoneme foundation because the app is optimized for retention metrics rather than systematic instruction sequence. Apps like reading .com follow a direct instruction model, though it requires a parent present for every session which isn't for everyone as well as All About Reading being the main one people recommend for home use. The above list is mostly good intentions with weak instructional foundations and parents deserve to know the difference."

"Make it fun, don't make it a lesson" - I understand the impulse and I'm not arguing for joyless drilling. But systematic phonics requires explicit instruction in a logical sequence and that is by definition a lesson. The goal is to make the lesson feel enjoyable, not to replace the lesson with play and hope it transfers.

The above list is mostly good intentions with weak instructional foundations and parents deserve to know the difference.

ALEKS > iReady ??

I am very firmly anti-Ai in the classroom across the board. Our administration wants us to move towards using ALEKS from McGraw-Hill (I think) in place of i-Ready for the rest of the year and potentially start with it next year. I know that they upload their own textbooks and workbooks to create the question database, but I cannot find any other information about how they power The AI component. I am putting it off as long as I can before they tell me I need to administer the diagnostic to my students in the classroom. I would love any further information anybody can share or if anybody has used it in their classroom, what their students thought about it. Thanks!

To the person who thinks they're just not academically smart enough: I was that person.

I want to write this carefully because I know it can come across as empty motivation-posting.

At 16 I had genuinely convinced myself that academic ability was a fixed trait distributed unevenly at birth, and that I'd received less than my share.

Not in a dramatic way. Just a background assumption that shaped how I approached studying. Why spend hours on something if the capacity isn't there?

What changed my mind wasn't a motivational speech. It was learning something specific: the concept of neuroplasticity.

The brain is not static. It physically changes as you learn — new connections form, existing pathways strengthen, and this continues throughout life. Difficulty during learning is the mechanism of this change, not evidence of incapacity.

The students who seemed to absorb things effortlessly were, in almost every case I later found out about, either using better methods, had encountered the material before, or had simply put in hours I hadn't seen.

This isn't about pretending there are no differences in initial ability. There are. But the ceiling most students hit isn't biological — it's methodological and motivational.

I'm not going to tell you everyone can achieve anything with enough effort. That's not honest.

But I will say: most people are nowhere near their actual ceiling. They're limited by approach, not capacity.

If you needed to hear this today — consider it said.

TL;DR: Spent years believing I had a fixed academic ceiling. Learning about neuroplasticity (the brain physically changes as you learn) changed my approach. Most students are limited by method and consistency, not capacity.

History teachers first grade

Hi everyone,

If you are a history teacher for the first grade of secondary education (ages approx. 12–14), this post is specifically for you. But anyone is welcome!!

Which chapter or historical period do students find the most difficult to understand or tend to perform worst on?

If possible, could you also briefly explain why you think that is the case (lack of interest, abstract concepts, difficulty with chronology, teaching materials, etc.)?

Of course, if you are not a teacher but still have relevant insights or experience, feel free to respond as well.

Thank you very much in advance!

What is Degree Speedrunning? Rethinking Assignment Design in the Age of Fast Online Degrees

“Degree speedrunning” is a casual term people use when someone finishes a college or online degree much faster than usual. Of late, I’ve been reading about students finishing their online courses in like weeks or a couple of months, and I can’t tell if this is impressive or a bit concerning.

Some people say it’s just high motivation and competency, which makes sense. But it also makes me wonder if students are actually learning deeply anymore or if it’s just getting too easy with AI in the picture.

So many traditional assignments like essays, summaries, online exams… feel like stuff AI could probably handle in seconds without much input from students.

How are educators even supposed to design assignments that actually show real understanding instead of just clean, polished answers?

Topics of sex in literature and how it’s handled by teacher

So my daughter is in a philosophy class in 10th grade. Topics of sex in their books is pretty common. Haven’t had an issue until this semester when she started a new class and the way the teacher addresses the topic. It doesn’t sound bad on the surface but it did raise some eyebrows and just wondering how to advise my kid.

So she noticed that he always seems to make it a focal point that sex in the book is either problematic or encouraged in the society of the books they’re reading.. which ok.. if that’s part of the philosophical aspect… but it’s how he says it that makes the class uncomfortable. As if he gets a rise out of saying the word sex to them.

My daughter and other classmates have observed that when other teachers are observing the class (at least 3 teachers now) he’ll glaze over the topic and call it ‘relations’, but when no teachers are observing it goes back to the awkward over emphasizing sex as a word and point again.

What would you tell your kid in a situation like this?

How do animals and sounds help in learning?

Last Thursday I was sitting with my little nephew at home. He was watching a video about animals and sounds. He started repeating sounds like lion roar and dog bark. It looked fun and interesting. That moment made me curious about learning tools like this.

I checked a nearby toy shop. They had a few learning books and toys. Most were simple and limited. I wanted something engaging and helpful for kids. The shop did not have many options to compare.

To check more variety and options, while scrolling many online marketplaces including alibaba I saw many animals and sounds learning products. Some were books and some electronic toys. Some had audio buttons and some interactive games. There were many designs and price ranges. It was easy to compare everything.

I also noticed some products were for toddlers and some for older kids. Some were simple and some advanced. This helped me understand what suits better for learning.

Now I am thinking is it better to buy animals and sounds learning items online or from local shops?

Why do so many students still struggle with basic grammar even after years of English classes?

I've been noticing this more and more in my classes lately. Kids can write decent paragraphs with okay ideas, but then little grammar slips pop up everywhere and it just makes the whole thing feel weaker. It's not even the big complicated rules that trip them up. It's the small stuff like verb tenses or when to use articles that keeps coming back.

I teach high school and I've tried the usual stuff, drilling rules on the board, giving worksheets, reminding them during revisions. It helps a bit in the moment but a week later the same mistakes show up again. Lately I've been slowing down and having them do more short focused practice instead of just editing their own work. Random little drills and challenges on specific topics seem to stick better.

I've even been messing around with quiz-style stuff like grammarrerror-com and similar tools for extra reps outside class. It gives instant explanations for every answer which is nice because then they actually start to get why something is wrong instead of just seeing a red mark. Not a magic fix but it has helped a few of my students make some real progress without feeling overwhelmed.

Has anyone else been dealing with this persistent grammar gap in their students? How are you handling the small but stubborn mistakes that keep coming back no matter what? Do you have them train actively or mostly rely on feedback during writing assignments?

First grader says they're learning about Jesus? In a public school?

My first grader told me yesterday that they pray with the assistant principal in the auditorium, they watch a really long video about "Jesus and who his parents are and about his life and the country he's from" and the video is different every time they watch. He said the assistant principal reads the Bible too. I asked when and how often do they do this and he said "well we go to auditorium, then lunch, then outside." Seemed to me maybe it's a frequent part of their schedule based off the way he said that. When I asked if his whole class goes, he said "if you're good" you. This is a public elementary school in central Mississippi. A large school district.

For months now he has been asking and talking about God, Jesus, heaven. We don't go to church, we can't really call ourselves Christian cause it's really not something we talk about at home. Like really not at all unless he brings it up (which he has been since late last year/early this year). If what he's telling me is true, it sure does explain the God. He's asked a lot about dying and what happens, probably totally normal at his age, but specifically if angels come down and get your body and similar questions. He asked this weekend if his two year old sister was going to die. I'm answering him as honest and transparent as I can but these questions are so heavy.

I messaged his teacher (see screenshot) and I'm not sure how to respond. I don't want to dismiss what my kid is telling me and I understand he's a child with an imagination, but the way his teacher responded just doesn't sit quite well with me..... Religion is absolutely not something I want my child learning about in school.

Edit: can't figure out how to post the screenshot so here's transcript ---

Me: Good morning. Wanted to reach out to you about something (my kid) was telling me yesterday. He mentioned going to the auditorium sometimes for prayer where there's a video about Jesus and his life. He also mentioned (asst. Principal name) having the Bible out...? He said it's happened more than once and it's only "if you're good." Is this something new that (school) is doing, or maybe the district?

Teacher: No it's not happening, but it's a good idea. Sounds like (my kid) is letting his imagination wander.

Are Students Grades Telling Us the Truth?

This is something that always bothered me, even when I was a student. We’ve all been there: you take a test, get a C, and the class moves on to the next chapter anyway. You never actually learned the stuff you missed, and now you’re expected to build on a foundation full of holes.

Or even worse, you learn the content and master it, but that old C from the earlier test still drags down your grade.

This is the "compliance model" of education, and why I felt so excited to learn about Mastery Learning.

In a traditional classroom, the time is fixed (we spend two weeks on fractions) but the learning is variable (some kids get an A, some get a D).

Mastery learning flips this. The learning is fixed (everyone must reach a high level of proficiency) and the time becomes the variable.

  • Tests as Diagnostics: In this model, a test isn't a final judgment or a "gotcha." It’s a compass. If you miss a section, the teacher uses that data to re-teach that specific gap immediately.
  • No One Left Behind, No One Held Back: Students who need more time get targeted intervention. Students who get it instantly move into enrichment or advanced applications.

This isn't just theory. Research shows that when we stop grading based on rigid timelines and focus on actual proficiency, over 90% of students reach high-level mastery. We’ve been grading compliance for decades; it’s time we started grading competence.

I put together a deeper dive into how this looks in a modern classroom and why it's so hard to implement on a large scale here. I am including this incase any teachers want to know a little bit more on how to teach to mastery and ensure that grades are an accurate reflection of student proficiency.

Handslation: Grab a new Language! Trying to build a meaningful AI-XR-Offline solution.

Hi everyone,

I’m working on Handslation. The goal is to make language learning a playful discovery by removing all interface barriers. You can find a video here.

  • The Concept: No menus, no keyboards. You literally "grab" a new language by picking up objects. The moment you touch something, the translation appears naturally.
  • 100% Offline AI: All AI processing happens locally on-device. No images or voice data are ever sent to a server.

I want to create a safe, private space for students to learn through play without feeling monitored.

Do you think this "grab-to-learn" approach could help students who struggle with traditional UI-heavy apps? Would you use something like this?

Not sure if I’m overthinking this but has anyone actually seen typing skills improve from those gamified typing apps?

Not sure if I’m overthinking this but has anyone actually seen typing skills improve from those gamified typing apps?

At our school students are super into those racing/leaderboard typing games and engagement is high, like they’ll actually log in without being forced. Teachers like it because participation looks great.

But when they do proper typing assessments later, the scores don’t really seem better than students who didn’t use those programs.

What I’ve noticed (could be wrong) is a lot of them just use 2–3 fingers really fast to win the games, so they get good scores there but their actual technique is kind of all over the place.

Feels like the games reward speed more than proper typing form, but I don’t know if that actually matters long term or not.

Has anyone seen proper data comparing gamified typing vs more structured teaching over a year or something?

Child to Teacher ratios, and meeting the moment (Parent Rant)

Hi there! I am a parent of a elementary school student in the US with a background in nature schooling (non-academic)

I wanted to get some feedback on some things I’ve observed about the school system. It seems to me that there are simply too many children to teachers in each classroom. Our class has about 25 kids to one teacher which seems to be the average, which forces the teacher to rely heavily on control techniques and makes for a overly structured environment that does not allow for the individual needs of the kids. I know this would be a major change and require a significant increase in funding, but I would love to see less than 10 kids to one teacher. Thoughts?

Also we live in a car dependent town with basically no public square or gathering place, meaning kids are not socializing outside of school and most are often at home on screens, and while I am grateful for the academic focus at school, most of these kids are hungry for mixed age unstructured peer to peer time which seems to be less that 10% of overall time that the kids are together. These kids all have a basic socialization need that we as a community are not meeting, and considering school is the only place and time these kids are getting together it strikes me as a major missed opportunity. Again, while I am grateful for the academic expertise of teachers I think making more time for kids to be kids is really important.

Thank you for your thoughts

Education

Teaching is synonymous with showing and the opposite of coddling. Someone who coddles teaches absolutely nothing.

Herein lies a key to teaching: mutual respect for others. You teach so that the student believes what you show them, but therein lies the key: belief cannot be imposed. The reason is that you don't believe because you're taught something; you believe for yourself. No one can make you believe anything. Believing is a verb that only relates to the "I"—I believe. No one can make me believe, no matter how hard they try.

This brings us to something fundamental: respect for others. You can't teach in any other way than by giving others what's appropriate so they have the necessary tools to believe and learn for themselves, and this is impossible without mutual respect.

As you can see, this is where dictatorships, dictatorial methods, and military-style education have no place. Nor should you disrespect the person who is providing you with the best tool for your life: education.

They will ensure that your education always respects your own critical thinking, free from external constraints and impositions.

In short, an education that begins with respecting yourself, so that from that foundation you can respect others.

Don't take for granted anything that raises doubts and that your ethics don't allow.

Alternatives to college for opening my own school

Hi everyone! I’m wanting to open my own school in the future, and I don’t want to go through college, but I do want to gain an education on how to be a teacher/design a school. Any ideas of what I should do? I’m thinking of going to a VoTech that has an education program, but besides that is there anything I can do? I definitely don’t want to get an education somewhere that is very expensive, so any advice would be helpful! If it helps, I live in Oklahoma.

I don’t know what path to pick

Hi, I was hoping someone could give me a piece of advice.

I am 20 years old, graduated from high school in the summer of 2024.

Straight out of high school I enrolled in a Building Engineering program, which quite literally was not my cup of tea (way too much math and physics and honestly couldn’t see myself staring at buildings my whole life).

After a year I changed my major to architecture, which was even worse!

I hated doing models, got almost immediately burnt out because of the long hours spent in front of the computer, the contant project deadlines were a nightmare for me.

Finally, after a couple of months into Architecture I decided to quit, and now I’m wondering what path to pick in September.

My next choice should be my final, and I would like to enter college passionate about what I’m studying.

To give you a bit of context, in high school I was the best student in my year: graduated with max grades, very passionate about almost every subject, very good at public speech and writing.

Teachers always said that I could commit to whichever major I had decided because I had the right attitude for studying.

However, college has not been what I was expecting so far and I am severely demoralized.

In the past months I have been considering numerous degrees but it seems like each one has its perks and flaws and I can’t seem to decide.

I know what kind of life I would like to have: I would like to have a family eventually, to have the possibility to travel around the world (perhaps also for work), I don’t need to be rich but I would also prefer not to worry about money and have the possibility to satisfy some whims for me and my loved ones.

I am from Europe and I would not mind moving to the US or to another country for work.

Can someone help me out? Any advice on how to figure my next steps? The past few months have been terrible, I’d hate to waste my twenties doing something I hate and being stuck in my hometown.

Thank you very much.

Has anyone else had a teacher that genuinely boosted your grade in college/uni just because of how they taught?

Like not just explaining content, but being organised, giving clear guidance on what to focus on, and actually motivating the class.

Most people in my class ended up getting high grades like As and Bs because of it.

Is this what good teaching should be or is it just luck getting the right teacher?

Now that teachers are more likely than ever to be the path of least resistance in all sorts of ways, won't that just mean folks who flop at everything else will start becoming the only ones likely to wind up associating with the profession?

I made a post some time ago on the Xennial sub about students and things like respect for teachers. One comment that stood out to me had to do with this person teaching their child 'not' to just do things because they're told too; the aim was to learn to question everything. Sounds empowering--to an extent--but when all the kids come with that same mentality, how is the teacher meant to get anything meaningful accomplished? Many aspects of learning can be tedious but 1 it doesn't mean they shouldn't be done and 2 teachers can only do so much. SOme part of the responsibility to try, to be civil, to ask for help when needed and so on should be completely in the hands of the students.

People act like rules, structure, consequences, Etc., are some class of imposition no matter what. Yet 'none' face increased chaos owing to an absence of these things more than teachers themselves.

Ultimately--and as 'solid' teachers jump ship in droves--I feel like the only people who will take this work on will be those least suited to doing it justice.

What are your thoughts on this? Good teachers can make learning--and even 'living' in some cases--feel amazing. But we seem to be depleting a finite resource we may never get back.

I think we should hold kids back. (Rant)

I think. we should start holding kids back again.

I may just be on reddit to much.

There should be no reason why we are letting people out into the world who cannot use critical thinking skills in every day conversation. Who cannot reason, who cannot understand, who cannot read, who doesn't want to learn because their viewpoint of learning has been damaged.

Is this not going to ultimately lead to societies decline?

we need to establish a schooling system that encourages kids to work through problems and not scapegoat them, this increase of pushing kids through with subpar levels is what leads to disparity in our community.

why are we not ENCOURAGING EDUCATION

why do people think its NOT IMPORTANT.

why are individuals CUTTING FUNDING FOR EDUCATION

do we NOT WANT AN EDUCATED SOCIETY?

why do certain schools receive LESS FUNDING then others and they complain that their kids are NOT MOTIVATED.

Im loosing it and I feel. hopeless.

what can we do to fix this how can we make it better.

the ability to think is a blessing but why are we not encouraging its growth.

PERFORMANCE

Parents, if you have a child in grade school, there’s one important thing you should watch closely: whether their report card grades actually match their standardized test scores (like the Regents).

If your child is getting high grades on their report card but much lower scores on the Regents, that’s a serious warning sign. It usually means they’re being passed along and given good grades without truly mastering the skills they’re supposed to be learning.

Don’t just look at the report card and assume everything is fine. Compare it to their test scores. If there’s a big gap, start asking questions—your child might not be getting the education those good grades are supposed to represent.

Right now, I’m mainly looking for *free* courses to get started, ideally in areas like:

* Marketing

* Communication

* Business communication

I initially thought platforms like Coursera and Udemy had fully free courses, but it seems most of them are paid or only partially free.

Would really appreciate any recommendations for platforms, websites, or even specific courses that are genuinely free and valuable.

Thanks in advance for any help!

The Case For and Against Homework

Homework is as ubiquitous to education as desks, shiny red apples, and yellow school buses. For years, it’s been the unspoken truth: if you’re a student, you carry a heavy backpack, find gum under your desk, and have homework.

But as an educator and principal, I’ve watched students lose access to sports, recess, and field trips over missing assignments. It made me stop and ask: Is this all worth it?

I’m convinced we need to move away from punitive "compliance" and toward systems that are equitable, intentional, and purposeful. Here’s the data I’m looking at and how I’m changing my approach.

The data isn't a simple "yes" or "no." It’s a qualified yes and depends on the assignments themselves:

  • Harris Cooper (2006) found the correlation between homework and achievement is much stronger in grades 7-12. In elementary school? The impact is remarkably small.
  • It’s not a numbers game. Xu et al. (2026) suggest that while effort is a significant mediator for achievement, the actual time spent often lacks a direct positive correlation.
  • We’ve all heard "practice makes perfect," but that only works if the practice is accurate. Simple busywork has almost no positive impact on actual learning.

Equity is the most complicating factor for me. Cathy Vatterott (2018) argues that homework is a primary driver of the achievement gap because it assumes every student has:

  • A quiet space to work.
  • A parent available to help.
  • High-speed internet.

When we grade homework, we are often grading a student’s environment rather than their intellect. This disproportionately hits our historically marginalized populations, causing them to fall further behind their peers.

I’ve realized I can win a lot more flies with honey by treating incomplete homework as a problem to be solved rather than a reason for detention. To level the playing field, I’ve shifted to three specific strategies.

First, I provide set amounts of time in class for extended assignments (essays, research projects, etc.). This ensures every student has my support while they do the heavy lifting. Second, I allow students to revise their work. The goal is "practicing perfectly," not reinforcing mistakes. Finally, instead of pulling a student's eligibility for basketball, the consequence is a meeting with me to develop a solution for how and when the work can be completed.

The goal of education is student learning, not compliance. By shifting to a problem-solving approach, I belie educators can ensure homework supports growth without creating barriers that prevent students from succeeding.

I created the following video to further discuss the pros and cons of homework as a supplement. I am submitting it to provide some additional insight into what makes homework effective and strategies that educators can use to help increase its impact on student learning. I hope it provides readers a little more context into the research for and against homework.

What are your thoughts? Do you believe homework is effective? Should it be skills based or compliance based? I confess, I am a little worried sharing this post as I wonder if this might be controversial stance.

Clarification for cross majors

I'm currently a new major in animation game development with audio and music engineering and graphics. I'm also thinking about persuing a BSc in psychology in distance. I wanted to know that for something further after all this, can I persue both B.Sc Hons and Msc in biochemistry after everything and further studies in it? I read somewhere that we can do this alternate change of cross major and more easily if from same stream but I want more clarification. It shouldn't be too big of a problem since I'm not directly jumping from a psychology Bsc to a Biochemistry Msc but following a non-linear path, right? Any precise and concise clarification from experienced elders are much appreciated from an inexperienced teenager, thank you.

My little brother has had a terrible homeschooling experience - if I got custody of him, how could I help him catch up?

Hi everyone. I'm not sure if this is the right place, but seemed so and I'm looking for any advice possible, and would be open to alternate subreddits or communities that might be able to help me out here.

I am in my mid 30s and I have a half-brother who is soon turning 11. I do not have contact with him or our father currently, as of 1 year ago. My dad is a virulent racist and homophobic bigot, obsessed with trolling local politicians online, and widely hated in my hometown. He had my little brother with a much younger woman. My lil bro's mom is out of the picture, having given up rights years ago after a drug addiction spiral. When my dad dies, and he thinks taking care of yourself or building good habits is for queers so that may be soon, I may well end up with custody of my brother.

My brother didn't have any formal education until age 8, which is legal in my state (a fact I find completely disgusting). Upon turning 8 my dad enrolled him in an online homeschooling program because my dad won't let him be around black people or immigrants, basically. My little brother, last I knew, cannot read at any functional level and cannot do math at anywhere near his grade level. My dad logs into the computer then sits in bed scrolling Facebook with Fox News on in the background while my little brother plays fortnite online completely unsupervised. This is all day, every day, and not a single person in any position of authority has been able to help me fix this in the years since it's been going on - schools, child protective services, nothing. It has soured me entirely on homeschooling and treating parents like they have rights over their kids as if the kids are property the parents can do what they want with.

My girlfriend and I have talked about what we could do to help my brother if I were to get custody, because currently I have no recourse at all. I'm prepared to go to work supporting my brother emotionally, helping him cope with his mountain of trauma and bad socialization, get him in public school and therapy asap, get him a better diet and exercise, less screen time and more friends. But I'm wondering what resources are available in situations like this.

He has 0 emotional control, frequent meltdowns/outbursts, and no attention span. He can't so much as sit and eat dinner without a screen in front of him and the ability to get up and cause some kind of chaos at regular intervals. And I don't mean in a regular young boy energetic way, he's more like a brain rotted toddler than a growing kid. If he were put in a regular classroom now he'd be a nightmare for the teacher and it wouldn't be fair to the other kids.

I assume some kind of special education would be necessary. Is this something I could talk to the public school about arranging? Would I need a diagnosis of ADHD or similar? Are there after school type programs to ease kids into a more structured learning environment? Is this something that comes up and they'd know what programs to put him in etc or is it something where I'd have to work with several organizations?

I'm trying to understand what will be possible to get the best life for my brother once I'm able to actually help him develop like a normal kid, away from the insane destructive prejudices that have ruined my dad's brain. I love my brother and want him to grow into the best person he can be, and give him the tools to do so. I really appreciate any advice anyone can offer.

If quality boarding schools were free in America for some reason, do you think they'd be popular places folks would send their kids?

I've always been fascinated by how boarding scools are depicted in British fiction. Also had a terrible home life as a kid and would have given up a lot to have the right to be elsewhere 98 percent of the time.

In this day-and-age where so many parents--even the good ones--are overwhelmed and exhausted and pretty much leave the kids to get on with things alone, I wonder if boarding schools could ever be a place of safety and community--secondary OFC to education--for today's kids.

are KV schools fair enough?

I have just came across the fact that they give priority to central and state govt employees' children, but then why is it thrown open to others?isn't that unfair?

A women working in my mess filled the form she isnt earning enough to make her daughter study in even a basic private school,so she asked me to fill the kv form, they do come in reserved category but since they did not have any document i filled their form as general only, for class 1 lottery result the service 5 category (who are most vulnerable) are getting least priority, why?

i thought like other merit based schools either they would conduct entrance or lottery itself means luck,,why is their a probability on the luck?

i am not able to adjust to this fact.

Is the current education system failing logical thinkers? Starting a pilot for "Logic-Based Peer-Learning"

Hi r/education,

I’ve been observing a growing gap between traditional academic curriculum and the actual needs of students who think in systems and pure logic. Most platforms today are either too profit-driven or lack a strong ethical foundation, leading to "knowledge without purpose."

I am currently running a small experimental Discord community where we take a different approach: The Logos Method.

We aren't a school. We are a collective of researchers, teachers and students who believe that education should be:

  1. Mathematically Logical: No rote learning, only first-principles thinking.

  2. Ethically Grounded: Using classical values as a compass for how we use what we learn.

  3. Collaborative & Cost-Free: We help each other with complex topics in Medicine, STEM, and Logic because we believe knowledge shouldn't be a gatekept commodity.

What we are doing right now:

• Providing peer-to-peer "Logic-Checks" for students in scientific fields.

• Building a framework for digital simulations where you can actually apply formulas instead of just memorizing them.

• Discussing how education can be restructured to reward integrity as much as intelligence.

We are looking for a few more curious minds—students who feel stuck in the "system," or educators who want to see how a logic-first approach works in practice. Write a comment if you’re interested in learning!

How we finally got a district approved typing program past every stakeholder

I spent most of last school year trying to get a typing platform formally approved for district-wide use. What I thought would be a simple recommendation turned into a multi-month process involving IT, curriculum, data privacy review, and two different administrator sign-offs.

The friction points were consistent: data privacy documentation, standards alignment proof, cost justification, and IT compatibility with our existing SSO infrastructure. Most platforms I evaluated could answer some of those questions but not all of them clearly enough to satisfy every stakeholder.

typing .com ended up being the one that made it through. Data privacy documentation was available and specific. The standards alignment crosswalk existed. The cost conversation was simple because the core platform is free. And the Google and Clever integration satisfied IT without requiring custom setup. I still had to do the legwork of presenting everything but having documentation I could actually hand someone made the final stretch much faster.

For anyone going through a district approval process: what's the first question your admin or IT team always asks? Would help me understand if our experience was typical.

Is Science and engineering really that hard?

According to social media taking science is like a torture and you have to just study all the time. People who are actual engineers is it really that hard? Because I have seen some of my most dumb and lazy relatives pass these exams like it was nothing. I would really appreciate an honest review and not just something from social media

Do activities like abacus actually improve brain development in kids?

I’ve been seeing a lot of programs lately that focus on brain development for kids — especially things like abacus, mental math, etc.

Some parents say it really helps with focus and memory, while others feel it’s unnecessary pressure.

Personally, I’ve seen kids become more confident with numbers when learning is more visual and interactive.

But I’m curious —

does it actually help long term, or is it just another trend?

How much technology in the classroom is actually helpful, and when does it start getting in the way of learning?

Some parents and teachers who don’t always agree are coming together to rethink screen time in schools.

In Iowa, there’s a bill co-sponsored by a Moms for Liberty chapter leader and supported by the state teachers union. It aims at limiting how much time elementary students spend on computers and gives parents more say in how devices are used.

Is it time to rethink screen time in schools? I’d love to hear what teachers and parents think.

Why don’t schools teach basic financial decision-making like debt, emergency funds, and how to use money effectively?

Why don’t schools teach basic financial decision-making like debt, emergency funds, and how to use money effectively?

I’ve noticed most people learn about things like EMIs, credit cards, loans, and emergency funds only after they start earning — often through mistakes.

Schools teach algebra, history, and science, which are important. But everyday decisions like:

how much EMI is safe
why emergency funds matter
how credit cards actually work
how to avoid unnecessary debt

are things almost everyone eventually deals with in real life.

Do you think financial basics should be part of school education? Or is this something families are expected to teach instead?

Curious what others think.

I kept switching between 5 apps just to study… anyone else?

I’ve been struggling with staying organized during my studies for a while now.

I tried using Notion for notes, Todoist for tasks, Google Calendar for deadlines, and then random apps for exams or flashcards… but I kept jumping between everything and honestly just felt more overwhelmed.

At some point I realized I was spending more time managing my “system” than actually studying.

So I started simplifying things and thinking about what I actually need as a student:

tasks & deadlines in one place

notes that are easy to organize

some kind of overview of exams and progress

A few friends and I ended up building a small tool for ourselves that kind of combines these things into one place. It’s only a year old, but it already feels way less chaotic compared to before and is officially supported by a German University.

I’m curious - how are you all organizing your studies?

Do you stick to one app or also switch between multiple tools?

Why aren't standardized test scores put more on the students (incentivized)?

Here is my rant about standardized testing since our district is scoring lower overall on STAR and PSAT. Why are not more incentives put on students to pass these exams? Why does it go to the teacher if they are the ones not passing? The whole system needs revamping, with adequate practice skills and sites, and what not for students to do well. If students are not penalized for not doing well, they are not going to care as much. I mean a pizza party, free prom ticket, or a free day is nice for students but that is not enough in my opinion.

Standardized test concerns for a HS math teacher

I am more nervous than about I ever have ,been this year. STAR MATH testing is almost over and the scores are not looking to hot. A few classes are around the 55th percentile in growth while some are in the 30's. Good standing is to have an average of 50th percentile in growth or better. Now we have PSAT and Accuplacer in the next two weeks. I have a colleague who scores a bit better than me but his are going down too. Our district is much older and inner city and enrollment has been falling. I am thinking of moving to another state to be closer to family. My principal said that if my scores don't improve then I may eventually not be rehired in the 27-28 school year. I am good for next year but don't want to be under scrutiny for low test scores. I am thinking about schools and I just don't agree with the whole standardized test ratings on teachers.

Possible Idea for the Future: Freelance Storytelling.

Possible Idea for the Future: Freelance Storytelling Business.

What are your personal thoughts on my idea of trying to create my own Storytelling business?

It would mainly consist of me travelling around to various different schools and nurseries (within my own local vicinity) in order to facilitate fun & engaging Storytelling Sessions for children aged between 2 - 6 years old.

I would couple all of my Storytelling Sessions with tangible objects that would be directly associated with all of the different objects and the different characters taken from each and every single story, as well as using different types of puppets to tell each of the different stories as well.

I would also include a specific amount of time to engage the class in discussions surrounding the specific stories themselves in an effort to encourage and develop their skills in things such as oracy & prosodic voice as well.

For the older children within the age bracket, I would include flashcards that highlight various different key words which would be taken from each of the different stories as well.

Any/all thoughts & opinions would be very much appreciated.

And be honest!

Kindest Regards

🙂👍❤️

STAR and PSAT for high school math

Anyone else tired of teachers being rated on how well students do on these standardized tests? I love teaching math but strongly dislike it when teachers and schools are evaluated how well students perform on these exams.

I mean I have seen the smartest, highest performing students bomb these exams. Yet if they decide not to take them seriously we are to blame as teachers. So done with it.

Education Question Roulette #3: What universal skills do you want your students to learn?

This was quite a weighty question, particularly for a Saturday morning but one that was incredibly rewarding to answer. I think one of the biggest misconceptions is that teachers are only teaching content knowledge. A lot of non-educators assume that ELA teachers are simply teaching about Shakespeare and Dickens or that math teachers are just teaching about quadratic equations and the Pythagorean theorem.

In reality teachers are not just teaching content knowledge but the higher level thinking skills behind that content. This includes critical thinking, drawing inferences, evaluating evidence and using it to support conclusions, and applying specific content-related skills and content to solving real world questions and problems. When reframing education away from teaching classical content and towards these universal, transferrable skills, you can truly see how dynamic and worthwhile an investment PK-12 education really is.

Check out my video where I answer this question in depth. Extended Video

Here is a very quick, one minute answer to this question. One Minute Video

These videos are meant to serve as my feelings on this topic in greater detail.

I’m a college admissions counselor. I’ve changed my mind about students using ChatGPT

As a college admissions counselor, I have edited hundreds of essays. This is the first year my students asked whether they should use artificial intelligence to write them. I warned them not to. I told them it would flatten their voices, that there would be no metaphors, dialogue, sensory details — the things that make an essay feel alive. But few listened to my advice.

During one session, a student had her mom run her supplemental essay for her application to Cornell University through ChatGPT. When I read it, I had to admit that it was better than the version I had worked on with the student. It had, I confess, a stronger metaphor and ending. Another student asked me if I could tell that their essay was AI-generated. I couldn’t.

With acceptencre rates falling at many U.S. colleges thanks to an increase in applications, students feel pressure to apply to more schools, and AI programs help them do that faster. ChatGPT, for instance, is being used increasingly to help construct essays. Rather than fight against it, I reluctantly provided feedback on the AI-enhanced drafts, trying to ensure that my students were turning abstract ideas into concrete ones. Following the maxim “show, don’t tell,” some essays needed a paragraph rewritten. Others benefited from minor adjustments, like removing cliches.

When early application results came in, my students using AI-generated essays got into their top choices: Georgia Tech, University of Michigan, University of Virginia and other schools. One even earned a Coca-Cola Scholarship, a prestigious $20,000 award with a less than 1% acceptance rate. With each acceptance, I had to admit I’d been wrong about using AI.

What are like any short term career courses that are good to take ?

I want to get better job because I’ve already worked at fast food and retail store. I’m also 29 which makes me feel like it’s too late to enroll in college. But like I don’t want to get in those trade jobs that are physically demanding. I was hoping to get like white collar or office type sorta job. Since majority of those jobs are done on a computer

Would going to boarding school benefit me?

So here is some personal context, I'm a 15 year old going into my sophomore year in august. I live across the country but am constantly flying to another state to pursue the sport I am in. I'm currently doing my GCSEs online (i shifted to online school in september because i get horrible migraine attacks and used to have horrible anxiety about going to school because of the people there) and then do my A Levels and eventually go to the UK for university. It's very likely i'm going to end up going to boarding school within the next 2 years anyways but theres a lot of things not wanting to move, (my family in another state, friends, boyfriend who i will have to dump, etc, etc.) But i need this move to grow in my sport.

Now if anyones been to boarding school in highschool what was it like? did you enjoy? what are some things i should be careful about and after hearing a little about me will it benefit me?

Should we take TC from 2nd std college (Akash tie-up) and switch to correspondence? (70k fees waste?)

Hi All,

My nephew is studying 2nd standard. We enrolled him in Akash Institute(JEE), which is tied up with some college XYZ. Recently, we found out the classes are useless — they only cover English, Hindi, and Computer subjects. We're paying ₹70k college fees for this.

Questions:

  1. Can we take TC from this college and switch her to correspondence 2nd PU? (he's already doing PCM at Akash Institute)
  2. Is there a better alternative than wasting ₹70k on useless classes?

Please guide us on the best path forward.

Thanks!

Any NotebookLM Alternatives That Support Flashcards and Spaced Repetition?

I've been experimenting with notebooklm for my classes and I like the concept of uploading source material and interacting with it, but it doesn't have any built in study features. For my purposes I need students to not just engage with material once but actually retain it long term, and notebooklm doesn't do that part. I'm making a presentation for them in space repetition and I want to give them options

Is there a notebooklm alternative that combines the note taking and source interaction with actual study tools like flashcards and spaced repetition? I don't want students using two separate platforms cause realistically they won't, it needs to be one place or it's not happening.
