Most American students study a language, don't even come close to becoming proficient at speaking it, and forget what they learned shortly afterwards. In addition, there is the obvious fact that the US is one big bucket of English.
I can understand why students in Europe study other languages. Many of those countries are the size of 2-3 American states and it is far more common for people on that continent to work in other countries.
If you are going to argue that American students should learn languages for the sake of open-mindedness and cultural enrichment, I would argue that there are far more efficient ways of doing that. Actually studying abroad in college is more likely to expose someone to another culture than warehousing disinterested HS/college students in a classroom and learning vocabulary and grammar. Even if studying abroad isn't an option, having a high paying STEM job and actually being able to afford a vacation in Europe once a year is also a possibility.
Taking those points into consideration, why is learning a 2nd language forced upon American students?
