What would consider the 'best' order to put questions on an exam, and what would you consider 'best'?
The goals for the questions themselves (difficulty, discriminatory power, proper scope, ESL friendly) are a separate thing, but I also have a hunch that the order matters.
Some possible approaches I've considered are to...
...start with easy questions and work up to hard ones to minimize panic or missed questions due to hang-ups.
...sort the questions by topic to facilitate recall and reward integrating knowledge.
...put the questions in a random order to better simulate the way recall would be needed in the field.
My questions tend to be short written answer rather than essay or multiple choice, if that matters, and the courses are in statistics or statistical programming.
