How do low-performing students at top colleges compare to higher-performing students at low colleges?

Curious to find any studies on career success comparing these two different types of students. A student who performed very well in high school may go on to perform poorly compared to his/her peers in a school like Carnegie or Harvard. How do these students compare in income, job placement, entrepreneurship, etc. compared to students who may go to a less reputable college, but perform much better than their peers?

This poses another question for aspiring college students. Are they better off surrounding themselves with higher-performing students? Clearly they will be challenged more, but at the same time it may be entirely demoralizing and there may not be any benefits to it, compared to that same student performing well at a less competitive college.
