What is an A supposed to represent in US high school?

What is an A supposed to represent in US high school? I feel like year after year, I get As in all of my classes but I don't really feel like I learned anything. Most of what I "learned" *memorized I've forgotten. So I'm just wondering what an A is supposed to represent. Is it hard work? I barely do any work outside of school. Does it represent an understanding of the course? or is it because of grade inflation? Do grades even matter anymore? I feel like I've wasted my whole life since all I've cared about is the grade but not the actual class.
