How common do social studies class teach middle/high schoolers about local politics?

If not, should local politics be a more common part of the curriculum? Why should children learn more about in politics with school?

Personally, I learned a little too much about the three branches in our government: legislative, executive, and judicial. They are important but I was taught them about them in 5 times over my school career.
