Schooling vs. necessity

Hello there,

I have always had a problem in classes that don't offer an application that I will use in real life because they don't hold my focus. It was fine in high school because I only had to do better than the next guy (or girl) and the teacher would curve the grades, but in college what you get is what you get and there are no second chances.

I am in college for mechanical engineering. I know a couple of mechanical engineers pretty personally and they all pretty much have the same thing to say. "You don't really need to know that, because the programs will figure that out for you."

In today's world where technology can do pretty much anything you need it to, why do I have to learn some of the things I am learning?

TLDR: Technology is changing the world, but not the classroom. Why?
