I'm writing a new curriculum for a new human rights class based on sports/ athletic issues

I would love some input on what are some important issues to cover. Our students took a survey and wanted another elective more focused on sports. However, we also have a character education component that we have to meet, hence a "human rights sports" class.

It's designed for 13-14 year olds in the USA and I'm imagining it very similar to what HBO's, "Real Sports," does.

(Note: If anyone knows an employee at HBO and wants to ask if they ever want to get in the business of curriculum writing, please share! Real Sports is probably a top 5 favorite show of mine ever).

Some topics I'm currently looking at:

  • Colin Kaepernick/ Mexico City 1968
  • Title IX
  • Should college athletes be paid?
  • Linsanity
  • Nazi Olympics
  • Corruption in the IOC and FIFA
  • Ethics of sports betting/ fantasy sports
  • Concussions
  • Economic cost of certain sports over others
  • Native Americans, passports and lacrosse
  • Tongan immigrants embrace football in Texas
  • Michael Sam and gay athletes
  • Shaquem Griffin
  • The Special and Paralympics
  • The Cold War through sport

I'm also interested in looking at geography of certain sports' popularity to also incorporate map skills, but this is really just an off-the-cuff list of what I am imagining.

What are some other issues that would be intriguing to teach and for students to learn about?

Thanks!
