I just joined my school’s equity team. In the wake of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, it feels hypocritical to say “I don’t have time to think about equity.” Seems to me like the time was a few decades ago.
Problem is.... I don’t have the vision for what a “solution” looks like. Kendi talks about the importance of being “antiracist” and eliminating racist policies.
What is the “playbook” here? What are the systems to dismantle and rebuild? Surely there is literature on this... I feel like my team and my school might have the momentum to do it.
My brain locks on to:
- Grading reform. The 100 point scale should be abolished. Students should be allowed to retake stuff for full credit. Etc.
- Fees impacting eligibility for teams/events, or even graduation. “Lunch debt” shouldn’t be a thing.
- Curriculum reform. Allow students to find their identity within your content areas. As a math teacher, this looks like blending Algebra with math history. Ex: Talk about solving equations with the Egyptian method of false position.
- Discipline policies. Enough said.
- Attendance policies. Same thing.
What am I missing?
I am scared that it will turn into the thing where “when black people are in pain, white people just join book clubs.”
I am new to the community here so apologies if this is a repost or has been answered elsewhere...
