Hey folks, forgive me in advance for the lack of citations in this post but I’m running with a whim.
In short my question is, why is there such a focus on developing literacy when so much of skill learning happens orally?
The benefits of storify-ing instruction are numerous. Historically there has been no shortage of successful lives lived without developing literacy. Entire communities still develop successful citizens of the world without reliance on the written word.
I understand the value in literacy for the sake of literacy. It can be a source of empowerment and pride, particularly if you belong to a group that his historically been deprived of opportunities to develop literacy.
However I cannot help but feel as if this incessant focus to develop literacy in all fields actually deters from meaningful skill development, and that this focus is fueled by classism and an improper status quo. You don’t need to know how to read to be brilliant.
Thoughts?
