can i go to american public school being a russian citizen?

Hello. My name is Igor Titov, I am a high school student from Moscow, Russia. I am studying in a 11 grade at state school, in a final one (we have 11 grades at schools in Russia). I am interested in going to 12 grade of American public school. I am a citizen of Russian Federation, I don't have a United States citizenship as well as my parents. But my grandparents have, they are citizens of America and they live in New York. I have been visiting them every summer since 2009 so I received a tourist category United States VISA a couple times. Is it possible for me to study in America and if yes, then how?

[advice] Looking for a masters program specializing in new school development/leadership

My wife's goal is to open a new type of school with a structure focused on multi-disciplinary teaching approaches and non-formal education.

Her first degree was in non-formal education, literature and therapy with at-risk teenagers.

She is looking for a masters program in the United States that focuses on new school development and leadership that could help her learn about the process of opening and running a school where a new or hybridized model of education could be used.

Does anyone know of any good masters programs in the United States that could be appropriate?

We know it's a long shot, but Harvard has a great School Leadership program in their Graduate School of Education:

The School Development Strand is for those students interested in leading nonprofit, for-profit or philanthropic organizations, and for those who want to launch their own schools or educational organizations.

A program like this would be ideal.

Thank you in advance for any recommendations or tips on programs that we can research further!

Research and resources on Small Group Learning and Problem Based Learning in math. [x-post with /r/Teachers]

Hi all, I hope you are all enjoying a much-deserved break from the classroom. I'm currently in a position to promote both of the above in a large, urban school district through the deployment of a new math curriculum. While kids are not in school, I'm putting together a guide on the whys and and hows of each. Both are hard sells, so I want to provide the justification for why each are essential for moving our kids in the right direction, and guides on how to implement them in the classroom. Most math teachers don't use small group work in the classroom already, so I want to provide the steps for how to make it work (rules and procedures and the ilk.) If you have any research and/or resources on either, would you mind sending them my way? Thanks in advance!

Advice for teaching adults in a GED-prep course

Hi everyone, I am an educator who has taught in all different places (student teaching in schools, school and family programs in museums, an afterschool program, tutoring, etc.) I have taught adults in a couple of different settings, but I have much more experience working with children.

However, I just got a job for the new year teaching a GED-prep class for adults; I’ll be teaching all the subjects on the high school equivalency exam and helping a group of adults prepare for it so they can get their degree. It’s a pretty intensive program (four days a week, covering history, math, literature, etc). I’ve never done anything quite like this, and I’m a little intimidated. Does anyone who has taught adults in a similar capacity have any advice or specific resources to suggest? I’m looking for suggested strategies on how to connect with an adult audience, specific things to be aware of when teaching adults that might be different from teaching kids, etc. Or if this isn’t quite the right subreddit I’d appreciate if someone could direct me to a more appropriate one. Thanks so much!

Civics and "Cultural Literacy" in US Education system

Hey!

I recently began reading E. D. Hirsch's Cultural Literacy and was wondering if someone could help me put its ideas into some contemporary context. I understand the work was published in the 1980s, and so was wondering if someone could explain the impacts it had at that time, and perhaps some of effects, if any, it's had on the education system in the US. (I understand parsing out effects like that might be contentious, given the inherent difficulty in pinning down causal relationships in this context.)

Note: I was originally pointed to this book by this article, so I have that as my starting point for understanding current understanding.

Thanks!

Advice needed - career advice UK

Hi there fellow redditors, first off, I'm sorry if this is not the subreddit for this but as this is related to educated, I felt like this is the subreddit for this. If any better subreddits are known, do not hesitate to comment and I was surely comply.

So, UK here, I'm a Year 10 student here (14m) in highschool, preparing for important GCSEs next year (diplomas). I am stuck at a dilemma as to what to do for further education. I'm an able and extremely talented student with A** grades predicted for all of my subjects so I have a wide variety of careers open to me. In the UK, we pick 3 additional GCSE subjects to do a GCSE in, in Year 9 and due to wanting to keep a broad availability of career choices, I went ahead and picked Engineering, French and all of the sciences (biology, chemistry and physics). My dilemma is that I've heard everyone's advice which tell you to pick something you love to do for the future.

I love computer science and have been doing everything related with computers from net security to programming on my own, as a result of my passion. I have been gaining grade 9+ with the new curriculum which is basically, more than 95% of the marks available, constantly. I have already received apprenticeship offers from GCHQ (UK intelligence service) and I really aspire to do something with computers, preferably programming. I have done many projects, both big and small, at various levels with various programmers on a range of platforms such as Github and Gitlab and I have established a good reputation throughout the community and my school.

The issue though lies in money. Programmers, in average, even the most senior ones, from statistics in the UK, earn at most 80k. Considering my naturally gifted intelligence in nearly all subjects, I feel like it would be a waste to get a job with this wage - 80k is not mediocre by any means and would be an easy and relaxing life but I feel jobs such as medical ones certainly have a higher wage, even reaching 250k in some cases, and I feel like I have the potential to reach these places (not to sound big headed). But then again, I am good at science but I feel like I would not be satisfied in the long run if I chose a medical profession as I would love a job related to computers.

It may seem like a long way but I'd like to plan my life from now before it gets too late as time flies :) and I ultimately, want to lead a happy life making the most of every moment. I am now stuck at this crossroad and I would like a truthful insight into the industry. How would I go at just going for money? How would I go at using all opportunities available? What is your experience? Do you regret your career choice? Should location changes be considered? How will jobs change as time goes on?

I hope you can help me out here and thanks for taking the time to read my query. I would be happy to provide more information, whether personal or about the education system or ... and looking forward to your answers!

What will a Master's Degree in Education do for me?

Hello friends,

I'll soon be getting my undergraduate degree. It's going to be in German Language and Literature, a fairly niche speciality, and I imagine a Master's degree will be imperative for finding a stable, "high" paying job.

I have always liked the idea of teaching, and being in academia, and want to get an idea of specializing further in Education.

Now... like I said. German Language and Lit... not a huge field for that. Can a Master's in Education do anything for me besides sharpening the knife I already own? My university offers a unique opportunity to structure a "double master's" that I've been considering, but I haven't the slightest about what else to couple German and Education with. I speak Spanish and Portuguese too... maybe another language?

A career with International Baccalaureate

Hello friends,

I apologize if this isn't quite the right place for this, any help I can get in regards to putting this where it should be for optimal feedback is appreciated.

I will soon graduate with an undergraduate degree in German Language and Literature. By the time I get my degree, I will have lived abroad for one year at a time in both Brazil and Germany.

I would like to get a Master's degree, as well, but am unsure of which direction to proceed in. I want to achieve a career working with the IB program, teaching kids of an international caliber.

I have been considering getting a master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language. I know I can get into a fairly prestigious graduate program, but the field seems over saturated.

Should I put my eggs in a different basket? I obviously have a strong German background. My Spanish is proficient and my Brazilian Portuguese is very good. I am open to any and all suggestions.

Thank you for your time.

Unfair school suspension?

Today I was suspended from school for two days. The reason was considered a miscellaneous offense, however it was documented as disrespect toward staff. A few days ago I created a spoof account of my school's assistant principal on Twitter. Today I posted an image of the cafeteria along with the message: "Watching these mother***kers eat lunch #IHateMyJob." I posted this as a joke and my buddies decided to share and like it. Later on, the principal found out and suspended me for two days, by hearsay and without any proof it was actually me. Along with my suspension, I was told I would not be able to make up my finals and I would be given a zero on all six. Despite my case, someone about three years ago had done the same thing, but she was given two days after school detention, and she was proven guilty and admitted to creating an account. I am just curious if you all think this is unfair to you all, and if so, then what should I and can I do about it? Thanks!

[META] Why is this subreddit so hostile to differing views?

Coming from a family of people who work in public education (including large inner city districts), I've always understood the problems afflicting poor, inner city district to be very complex and multi faceted. There's a litany of factors that contribute, such as readiness, facilities, teachers, political pressure, extreme poverty, and a host of others. And complicating matters is how interrelated all of these are.

However, browsing the subs here it seems that the problem has been reduced to a matter of funding, ie that there's no political will to pay for it. Further, it seems that any notion of school choice is seen as a plain evil, in whatever form it takes.

I think it's worth discussing what the issues are, and trying to tease out the different factors so we can better understand the nature of the problem. I'm not a school choice zealot, but am interested in learning, discussing, and debating the pros and cons of alternative models, especially considering the widespread failure of the current model for low income families. However, it seems very clear that this is no such place, which is disappointing.

I'm really not trying to pick a fight, but I think education is an important enough topic that it's worth risking some contention.

I Need a guidance about abroad Education As My life ıs going down

So, to sum up, since this August my life and country is going down from the hill at full speed. Everyday, something worse happens. Everyday the word "war that is going to come" is between our lips. But I'm tired of it, I just want to feel safe, I just want to learn. And finally I'm thinking about going abroad for my education. As I mentioned in my previous post on another subreddit I'm a design student with high honor (If it means anything) and it will be my last year that I want to leave. The problem is, parity is ridiculous here. Euro or dollar is too high against our currency, so I will try to get a scholarship. And actually I've always thought about graduating from this school and going abroad for a postgraduate program. So I have lack of knowledge about opportunities in my major.

To sum up, my questions are;

1) In which countries or schools, abroad students from Turkey are accepted to take only the last semester's classes and graduate? Or has equivalence between? Or is it possible?

2) If the first question is possible, how one can get a scholarship? Or is the fee feasible?

3) How does the procedure of getting an acceptance in this "hard times" working?

I might have problems with my words that give you hard times to understand but I wrote this in a bit of hurry, so forgive me for my faults. Thank you so much in advance.

20 years old, Married, 2nd year of active duty in the U.S Air Force. Is it too late for me?

Hello Reddit,

First time poster here with a question about education. Well, mostly about chasing goals. So, hi Reddit. I'm Allenxander and I am enlisted in the U.S Armed Forces--Air Force to be exact. I am married to am amazing woman with Cystic Fibrosis. Feel free to look that up, but it isn't the focus of this post. I am an aspiring author--in between my first two novels--and now that I can receive tution assistance; I was going to begin pursuing a graduates degree in English.

However, I have battled for a long time with figuring out who I am. I think we all have done it or still are, but that battle has constantly plagued my decisions. I am a very plan focused person. If I can get an inkling of an idea or passion, I will swim towards it rapidly. And right now, as I type this on my phone in Africa, I am stuck in the purgitory of good ideas with no clear direction. My interests and skill have jumped from photography, writing, law enforcement, graphic design and engineering(Currently a cop for the AF). All of these have had varying results and feedback on a personal level(photography was probably the thing I was most naturally successful at). And i am currently working with our investigations depart to transfer over to our Special Agent positions. I am not here to talk about myself though.

Space. Space has been a dream of mine, far longer than any other goal or hope that I have ever had. And now, at what I am considering a crossroad of my life(and maybe that is the only reason I am considering the following), I am finding myself wishing to chase it once again. I guess I am trying to say is: Is getting a graduates degree in one of the many fields accepted by Nasa, Space X, etc, even possible for me at this point.

I have been toying with the idea of getting a physics degree and incorporating that with my love of photography by hitting the Optics field. I could stay in both pools of passion while aspiring to the high, high, dreams of one day hitting the Final Frontier. But, how?

Now I know these degrees are heavy in Mathematics and the such. And I have been out of school for a minute. But, while in school, I loved these subjects and with the right material and drive, I know I could push myself to the point of necessary skill. I just need an idea of how, where, and what?

Being active duty in the military makes school a challenge, and I have considered grabbing my G.I bill and hopping over to the guard so I could pursue my degree full-time. Que the wife with the life threatening illness. Now, this lack of knowledge of my part, but I don't know the extent of the guards care for dependents, let alone ones with a large list of medications and practitioners. We have even consider a "divorce" so that she could fill under social security again while I go to school. A plan that I would, as you can imagine, wish to avoid.

And say that I do that. What then? Is it that easy to just waltz into college and start chasing these grand degrees. Are there sources/external methods of learning that any of you have used who are currently investing their years into these degrees? Is it already laughable that I am a twenty year old attempting to dive into this craziness? I don't know. And I don't think I have a specific question in mind. Just any guidance would be beyond helpful. And I know space is a pipe dream. Thousands upon thousands of scientists have dreamed longer than I have of touching the stars, but that doesn't mean I can't either. I am interested in getting on the path to better my chances is all. Thanks for your time. Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place or not pointed to the right people, if you can't tell; I am a little lost.

What I believe is wrong with our Education System, as a 15 Year Old Student

So, recently, it has been announced that Betsy DeVos is going to be Donald Trump’s Secretary of Education. Depending on who you ask, this could either be a great change for our youth, or just another part of Trump’s presidency that will absolutely ruin our nation. She is extremely pro-school choice and will likely make that her main focus as Secretary.

Now, people will tell you that if we improve school choice, by giving money to families so they can afford expensive schools, or by means, it will allow for more competition between public and private schools, improving the quality of them all. But studies have shown that the increased competition has had little to no effect, and definitely not enough to warrant the amount of money we will be spending on it. While I do believe school choice is important, and that a one-size-fits-all solution is impossible, we shouldn’t be spending billions on this. Competition won’t solve the problem if no one knows that there is a problem.

And I believe that while her intentions are very good, she is focusing on the completely wrong thing. Instead of giving kids more choices for schools that are either complete shit or privately-owned complete shit, we should be focusing on improving our “shit”. But it can’t be that bad. There’s no way. I’m just a retarded 15-year-old who doesn’t even know what he’s talking about. Well, I’m in the education system right now. And let me tell you, it’s pretty terrible.

Every day, I go to school, sit in honors classes for 45 minutes doing jack shit except for playing flash games or talking with friends, and then go home knowing that I have straight A’s even though I barely touched a pencil. Sounds like a pretty good setup, doesn’t it? I mean, my teachers sometimes just kinda get up and leave in the middle of class. Most kids would love being able to fuck around every day for hours on end with no consequences, even I do. But the issue is that I didn’t learn anything. Nothing. I’m in my second year of high school, getting good grades in honor classes, yet I am nowhere near ready to face the real world. And that shit is scary.

And you may say, “But that’s just one school. There are plenty of good schools out there.” And sure, there are lots of great schools. But there are also lots of shit ones. And that’s unacceptable. Sixty-Six percent of U.S. fourth graders scored “below proficient” on a NAEP reading test. And the U.S ranked 17th in educational performance out of 40 countries ranked. How come we are number one in GDP and Military Power, but not something as basic as education? Because our education system is shit. Oh, but we rank first in prisoners, so that balances it out.

But how do we fix it? I mean, I’m a just a pissed off 15 year old so I’m probably not the best person to ask. But I believe the solution is to give the power to the people closer to our students. Power should be close to the teachers, and principals, than it is to the board higher-ups and elites, because those people are the people who had bright ideas like giving the students iPads, which turned out absolutely horribly.

(This is off-topic but, why would you give kids iPads? Did anyone actually think kids would learn with these instead of playing fucking Flappy Bird and watching Netflix?)

But like I was saying, Education Reform should be led by people who truly know what the system is like. They are going to be the ones who know what to do. First, of course, we would have to have higher standards for who we hire for our teachers. We should have higher requirements for teaching than “Have a degree”. Teachers may not get recognized for it, but they have one of the most important jobs in the country. And if we hire people who don’t care and just want the paycheck, then that’s a problem.

Also, schools should cut useless programs and classes that almost always get terrible teachers and simply eat up the budget, such as classical films or liberal studies. Then, once the budget is freed up, use that money to increase the pay for the teachers of the core classes, so that more will apply, who are better qualified. Then, give the people closer to the students, such as teachers, the ability to decide how the budget is spent, and how the system should be reformed.

Then of course, there’s common core. While it is controversial, common core is a good idea. Math and English, at least until middle school, need to be standardized. While schools shouldn’t be completely controlled by the government, it should be at least regulated. But common core in its current state is broken. Standardized testing and grades are considered more important than actually understanding the material. I believe that the reason kids in my class cheat on their tests is because schools value their scores and their GPA more than their learning. Common Core needs to be revamped to focus on actually teaching the student, instead of making sure they get a 30 on the ACT or some other bullshit.

Now, obviously, it is more complicated than that, and my idea could be completely flawed, but it seems like a solid plan. Then again, I’m just an edgy 15-year-old kid on the internet. But I believe that once we have teachers that care and have the power to actually teach, then maybe our students can learn again.

tl;dr edgy kid on internet tries to fix his shitty school

Need help. Best pathway to postgrad research

Currently, I am doing a degree in Psych Science at an Australian Uni. I previously did a Diploma at the same uni, and they have credited me for it. This means they have taken off one year of the degree, so I only need to do a two-year degree if I keep going where I am. Here is my problem, the Uni I'm at only offer postgrad studies in clinical psych, and I would much rather go into research. So my options are to continue at the same place, finish my degree and apply for postgrad in research elsewhere, or change uni's now to one that offers postgrads in research, do a 3-year undergrad degree, and apply for postgrad from within the uni.

Put simply, Is it worth doing an extra years study to increase my probability of been accepted into postgrad psych research? It would be appreciated if somebody who knows the educational system better than me could explain whether it's worth changing now, or not worrying and just applying after undergrad.

And the problem is she's not even professional! She doesn't have any strategy on teaching, forces people to act like a Catholic just like her, and she just sits around talks all day about her life.

Educational software for Spanish speakers

u/Anexplorersnb1h Hey everyone I hope this is the right sub to post his in. we're giving a laptop to my little cousin who comes from a poor family and lives in a rual part of Mexico. (Asus E402MA) we know that his family would never be able to afford one so that's why we decided to get it for him. I'm looking for educational software to preload on it. I don't want him just playing brain numbing games and downloading viruses. It's my understanding that he has an Internet connection I don't know how reliable are fast. I would usually try to do this research myself but I'm a little pressed for time (I'm buying the laptop after work and handing it off 3 hours later) so if anyone could give me some ideas of some free or low-cost software, maybe some English language learning stuff some basic coding games, etc I'd really appreciate it!

According to the Community College that I am going to I will be getting my reading and Math credits. These are named as:

EGL 0100 and EA Developmental Algebra 0071

Once I get those credits where do I go to then? I dont want to ask the people at the community college because I feel as if their main concern is to get as much money out of me as possible and will give me misleading information. I rather ask people that arent as interested of getting my money as they are. Thank you so much. Im just a little confused is all.
