Cost of standardized tests such as the ACT and GRE.
Hey r/education, first time poster here. I was just curious what the overall consensus is on the cost of many standardized tests for higher learning. For example, the GRE currently costs $200 to take plus whatever costs come from prepping and sending scores. Is this really the best path? I feel that it acts as a barrier and discourages prospective students, especially those already struggling with debt and loans as it is.

Question about college and intellectual property
I will be applying for college soon, and I want to know: what is the general stance of colleges on student-created work?
I've already done much research on this. It seems to me that many universities take ownership of inventions students produce on their premises, while generally allowing students to keep the copyright on things that you'd copyright (paintings, videos, etc).
I definitely plan on creating things in college, and I want to own those things, even when I'm using "school resources" to create them. I don't plan on being employed by the college while I'm there.
My real question is this: what should I look for in order to figure out a college's stance on this sort of thing? What should I search for to get their actual, legal policy on such an issue? There don't seem to be any websites that let you search for colleges based on this.

My thoughts On the Current Education system. (Re-post from my tumblr)
It’s honestly awful, what I’ve had to see of it here in America. I find the thought of doing what you are told with no explanation sickening! A vile move by the educators of our youth! as of now, any child I have spoken to has not the least bit of common sense. In comparison, my father was much more civilized at their age. He was (and still is) an intimidating man. Intimidating by how he is so well organized, well mannered, and able to conversate with. Same goes for my mates back in middle school. I was able to have multi-hour debates on Religion, Sciences, and the world in general. Now, passing by the occasional middle school, is a much different area. They rely on fidget spinners, and other little odd things to keep themselves entertained. They had no time to enjoy life, as school was in over their heads. Pressured by this grueling taskwork, they build up a very visible sadness. They show themselves as immature, as if to hide their feelings. They know that they can be punished by speaking out against the school. They can’t end what has happened, and it isn’t even their fault. We, society as a whole, have let our youth down. They have become broken creatures with no will of understanding life. They always try to cover up what they can with fun in the summer, as the situation has truly hit them hard. What shall become of them? We are yet to know. But what I believe that it is not an ideal picture. Memes were only the beginning. These people could become our future! We have failed them. We have set up what shall be a dumbed version of what reality is today. We will try to cover up the mess with an appeasement to their very nature, a much easier solution in short term. However, in long term, this is a grave mistake. The way in which the world as a whole solves problems will make so many more problems! They will miss out on the beautiful Earth of this world, a strickenment of our God-given rights! They will become all too obsessed with the latest trends that had the way paved by a greedy corporation. They will become spoiled brats that, on their own, cannot survive. Hell, I’d be surprised if they could even THINK without help, much less speak! What have we done? We have ruined the progress of humanity as a whole! And all because of how our next generations are being taught. It’s horrifying, disheartening. I wish we could have saved them...

First-Year english teacher looking for pedagogy books you love!
I've just finished my master's degree and am in hot pursuit of a job as a high school English teacher. I have this summer relatively free, so I've decided to commit to reading books that are in the high school curriculum, as well as one book on pedagogy a week. I would love any recommendation for general pedagogy books, but also English-specific ones you have enjoyed or found relatively helpful. Thanks in advance!!

Why Colleges Curve
This semester, I took Microeconomics and Financial Accounting. I passed the homework from both classes. The use class consists of a midterm and a final. The midterms were easy but I got D's but to the small mistakes I made on them. The finals were hard. I went to tutoring, studies, and watch the professors review questions, but didn't help. I failed the exams, but the professors here curve it.
Curving helps the students get the grade they deserves. I got a C on Microeconomics after getting a 52 on the final, and a C+ on Financial Accounting after getting a 45 on the final. I struggled as there were questions that were confusing and difficult.
Curving however, disincentives students to work hard to get a desired grade. When I took Statistics, the class was difficult as there are various equations to use to solve questions. The professor, however, was a laid-back one, where his exams were open-exam, and gave a large curve where the average grade will be 80. I was basically a D student as the homework was difficult. After the curve, I got a C+.

Recommend Books about Education Theory (i.e. teaching, learning, etc)
I'm interested in books that discuss learning processes and explore teaching methods focused on children/beginners. I'm also interested in books about experimental/unorthodox methods of teaching for children. I would prefer if the books are more about theory rather than tips and tricks for teaching.

Is it better to be challenged or to take blow off classes?
Hello everyone, I'm sorry if this is the wrong subreddit to post this question at, I just didn't know where else to do it. If there's a better place to post this please direct me to it. Anyways, I've really been debating whether or not to blow off my senior year of high school. I'm currently a junior, and I'm having a VERY hard time determining my schedule for next year. I'm currently signed up for 3 ap classes, and I've taken 3 so far, but I'm debating on continuing that or dropping them to have a blow off year. Now I know the negatives of applying to college, but that's not what I'm asking about. Would I have a better time during my senior year taking BS classes, or actually challenging myself? Which would keep me more interested, blow off classes or challenging classes? What do you guys think? All responses appreciated. Thank you all

Canadian Children Brainwashed by Gender-Neutral Extremist Ideology? Senate Should Reject Bill C-16. [Opinion video]
Controversial Bill C-16 will get it's final vote in the Canadian Senate as early as Tuesday, May 30.
Here is a disturbing video about Bill C-16:
Canadian Children Brainwashed by Gender-Neutral Extremist Ideology? Senate Should Reject Bill C-16.
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uh7Qqw04ToI
This video discusses possible adverse consequences of Bill C-16. It includes an emphatic warning from the American College of Pediatricians that "Gender Ideology Harms Children". It features various video clips from Jordan Peterson, Gad Saad, Jared Brown, and Theryn Meyer.
Here is the link to the American College of Pediatricians' warning:
Web page: http://ift.tt/1Y0Ipbw
Here is a related video, which is equally disturbing:
Prison For Refusing Gender Pronouns? Lawyer Explains Bill C-16, Compelled Speech, to Canadian Senate
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMbqCHPB9jg
In this video, lawyer Jared Brown explains how you could be imprisoned for refusing to use invented gender pronouns, once Bill C-16 is passed by the Canadian Senate.
One crucial point he makes is that what we see is NOT what we'll get. He is paraphrased in the video like this:
"We start with Bill C-16 as a vaguely-worded law that initially seems fairly harmless. But after it's passed, the vagueness of the law will allow the Minister of Justice to attach whatever specific policies suit her radical agenda. Given that Ontario is the model for this law, we should expect that gender-neutral pronouns will be enforced Canada-wide. In addition, men will be allowed to use women's washrooms and change rooms. The law will also enable those who want to impose a confusing, gender-neutral curriculum on all school children. If you resist the law, you could be accused of a hate crime, and be brought before the federal Human Rights Tribunal. If you don't obey the Tribunal, you would be held in contempt of court, and probably imprisoned."

Question about AP and weighted classes
Attended the GF's high school awards ceremony the other day. Had a question.
They lined up their top 10 GPA students for recognition. They were all possessing GPA's in the 105+ range. I was surprised. I was never a gifted student, so it was a new concept to me to see grades above 100.
The GF was not in the top 10. She was a VERY gifted student, so I jokingly asked why she wasn't up there with the others. She informed me that they were all heavily invested in AP classes all day, and because they were weighted, they got higher grades. Because she went to BOCES in the afternoon, she had lower grades.
She attends AP classes in the morning. Gets 90's and up in all the classes. Sweet! Goes to BOCES in the afternoon to work on her aircraft mechanic certifications. Gets a 100, and is top student. AWESOME! Problem is, her GPA was above 100 because of her AP classes (somehow 90's = 100 +) And because she got a 100 in BOCES, which was less than her GPA, her GPA went down.
How can someone be punished for getting 100? She was top of her class!
I'm a little lost.

The study of Aging in Biology
A large amount of breakthroughs in the understanding of aging have taken place over the past decade, and it is no longer considered something "mystical". Even big companies like Google's Calico and the SENS Research Foundation are working to get aging under medical control (AKA reversing the aging process).
QUESTION: Why do high-school biology text books seem to have a lack of information on the aging process? In most, you only find a paragraph or two regarding telomeres and possibly the Hayflick Limit, but that is such a small portion of what is currently known, it seems that at least a chapter should be made for it?

New teacher and I dont know how to handle this conflict! -- If a student creates a club one year, do they automatically hold the Position of "president" if other club members are interested in running in future years and current president is not stepping up?
I have a student who approached me to advise a club for a charity she was interested in. She obviously got the role of president that year and recruited some friends to join the club, as well as I recruited students from my classes. Throughout the year, she did not necessarily step up as a leader and did not fulfill some of her president responsibilities. Several students in the club have stepped in and really shined as leaders of the group. These students have now expressed interest in running for positions.
I set up a form for elections and emailed it to the club members. I received a very angry email from the current President student saying "as the founder and president of the club, she already has people she think would be good for these leadership positions (basically, her friends) and so we do not need to hold an election." -- personally, I found that extremely disrespectful as a student talking to an adult.
Veteren teachers.. please help!! I do not know how to handle this situation. She did approach me to be the faculty adviser and came up with the club, but has not really stepped up in any way as a leader this year! (missing meetings, not sending out payments, etc.)

Up vote party For hS drop out getting her BS in Bio/Chem Tomorrow!
Hey everyone!
I just finished my last final exam of my undergrad career and wanted to share this with you all.
I dropped out of high school when I was 15. I started workin the overnight shift as a server at a local 24hr breakfast joint and couldn't make it to my first class (chemistry) in HS on time. I loss my credit in chem and failing this class pushed me to drop out of high school. I used to be a good student, the star athlete. Failing was something I had not experienced before. I remember thinking "Whats the point of going to school if I'm gonna fail?"
Well, tomorrow I'll be graduating with a BS in biology and chemistry, and let me tell you something.... I've failed plenty of exams and have taken one or two classes over but never let that stop me.
Resilience, is key y'all.

Group Project Partners
In my history class, we had groups of four and had to do a project, only me and one other person actually worked on it while the other two were playing on their phones and such. We asked them to help but they just ignored us. Me and my working partner brought this to the teacher's attention after we had presented today. He said he saw what was happening but all the group members had to have the same score, or we could think of something. What could we do? I want to get a good score (because it was a good project) but I don't want the freeloaders to get a good score without doing any work.

Advice needed: go to Uni/online courses/volunteering my time
I'm 23 now without any formal education since high school. I've been thinking about getting a degree in zoology/marine biology or conservation. Essentially anything to do with wildlife.
The problem is I hate being stuck in a room. I achieved good grades in school but I despised every minute of it. At the moment I'm in the middle of my travel the world phase of life and was wondering if its possible to do any university recognised courses online that may lead to a degree. I really dont think i can do the classroom thing again just yet and I'm making way more money from working while I travel than I would as a barman back in the uk. So financially returning home doesnt make much sense.
I have been looking into volunteering expeditions for insights into conservation and I would be happy to pay for these if anybody knows of any organisations that provide a real education. Please help.

Funding student trips
Hi everyone!
I'm a high school teacher and two of my students have been accepted into an 8 day summer institute with ACLU in Washington D.C.! It's going to cost $2500 per student and we've been fundraising like mad, but we're still a little short. It would be a great opportunity for these young ladies but they can't afford it on their own.
I am hoping that the wonderful people of Reddit can help! There are so many of you that I'm sure a dollar from anyone who can spare it will add up very quickly. Please donate what you can! You can read more about the students and the program through the link below:

I'm soon to be graduating with my bachelors degree. I keep flip flopping if I I want my Masters in mental health counseling or my masters in social work. My end goals are to be able to give therapy and/or teach (high school level or adjunct professor). Which is better/more versatile? Associate Lecturer - A couple of my students are potentially being exploited for free labour. How to proceed?
I'm an associate lecturer at a university here in the UK.
Today, a couple of my students approached me to ask my thoughts on a "job" one of the other lecturers has offered them over the summer. As far as I'm concerned, something stinks.
They were initially promised a "summer job" (in games development, which is what I teach and they study), but after having show interest, the offer changed to an internship, to an unpaid internship, to a "volunteer" role. The lecturer asked them to sign a contract committing them to 6 hours work a day minimum, completely unpaid. As far as I understand it, that's not how volunteering works. There were promises made to them about exposure to industry professionals, which would be worthwhile coming from an established company, but the lecturer making the offer has no released products at all, and zero industry connections I can find, aside from living near to a busy software development area here in the UK.
From what I can see, he wanted them to sign up to work for 6+ hours a day on zero pay, to produce a demo he could present at an upcoming trade fair. There was zero design documentation for the project, and no clear direction whatsoever.
Unfortunately, one of the students left her very decent job supervising at a supermarket to take this role when it was sold as a summer job, so she is now out of a job.
They asked me whether I think they should take the volunteer role, and I had to be honest; it stank. They were being asked to commit to 6+ hours work a day without pay for a company with zero released products to produce a demo for a product with no design or direction presented. I told them they could get just as much benefit spending the summer working on their own project, and they could build just as much industry connection as was on offer off their own backs, AND have copyright over whatever they produced (the contract on offer stated they would have no legal rights to what they produced). I pretty much told them to run far and fast.
The question is, should I raise this with the university? The lecturer seems to have attempted to deceive them and exploit them for free labour. One of them is now out of a good job as a result.
If not the university, who should I raise this with?

GED vs High School Diploma?
I am having a debate with my Australian husband born and raised who is irritatingly opinionated and thinks he knows everything. I constantly remind him America is not Australia and things don't necessarily work the same.
Anyway he looked it up and read that technically a GED is the same as a high school diploma. I told him that in the real world not technical terms on paper, it is harder for people with GED's to get "good" (take the term good as you will ; I mean like lawyer, doctor, teacher, engineer, scientist, therapist) jobs.
Please help me answer a few scenarios and please be honest! thanks so much
1) a girl is doing good in school and has good grades. her boyfriend wants her home more so she decides to stop pursuing a high school diploma and get a GED. She is more than capable to get a high school diploma but feels the GED will allow her make her boyfriend happy. Is it a bad idea to get a GED when she can get a diploma?
}
2) There is a job as a plastic surgeon but there is 1 position available only. Two candidates - 1 of them has a GED, A bachelor's Master's AND doctorate and 1 has a high school diploma, a Bachelor's and Master's AND doctorate. They have the same degrees, but one has a GED and one has a High School Diploma. Who gets the job?
3) In general in any field, high school diploma versus a GED, who gets the job?

Idea for teachers to tell students they will time to time say untrue things they expect students to catch.
I was just watching Niel DeGrasse Tyson's interview on Conan and I had an idea I think would be interesting for teachers in many classes, but especially history and science to use in class.
At the beginning of the year tell your students you will from time to time purposely say untrue things. The expectation is that students will do their own critical thinking and use the scientific method and logic to determine the facts.
Obviously, the things that are said need to have demonstrable evidence of truth, but I think it could be a good way to make sure kids are utilizing critical thinking.
Maybe this should be part of a critical thinking class, but I think it is important in this day and age to teach kids how to discern fact from fiction and also where there is room for interpretation and where there is a cold hard fact that cannot be refuted.
The more I write this entry the more I think this may need to be part of a critical thinking class where the students are forced to consider their own biases to help them know where they need to apply even more scrutiny on their beliefs.

Help me understand the problem
I strongly support public, not-for-profit education. But I often hear from talented teachers about how frustrating it is to work under the current regime of standardized curriculums and testing. Parents who are frustrated often blame the federal gov for these problems, but my understanding is that curriculums are adopted by states and that federal dollars actually make up a small portion of overall public education spending. So it seems the fight really should be at the state and local level. As a parent I feel pretty helpless in this situation. I'll guide my kids and I'm sure they'll get a decent education overall. I try to support candidates for office that want to change the current situation, but there seems to be so much money and pressure advancing testing and strict control of teaching. It seems hopeless. As a last resort I'm considering the "opt out" choice. If enough parents chose to opt their kids out of certain tests, could this make a difference? Is my understanding of the situation wrong? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Alternatives to strict dress code besides uniforms
Over this last year I have been struggling with my districts dress code policy. I have found that it picks on certain types of girls and I just don't think it is fair. First off, other than the normal rules such as no profanity, the entire dress code focuses on females (IE- short shorts, cleavage, exposed shoulders, etc). The other issue is that it targets certain girls. Skinny, short girls can basically wear whatever they want, while thicker girls (bigger thighs/butts, larger chests, tall) are constantly being scrutinized for wearing THE SAME EXACT CLOTHES as the other girls. Several times this year, I have had girls coming in my room crying about their bodies because of this situation. I want to change the conversation from "she can't wear that but another girl can" to teaching girls how to respect their bodies and the bodies of their classmates.
Uniforms are not an option. 1. They won't fix the issue I am presenting and 2. The community and board would never support this option. I don't want to limit freedoms, I just want to change how they are perceived.

Hey guys, I apologize in advance if this is the wrong sub. Please direct me if this is inappropriate.

Since I obviously already have student debt, I am looking for the cheapest and most efficient route to becoming a teacher.

Discussion Thread: 'Teaching the Controversy' in Science Classrooms
This week I came across an interesting Nature piece on the growing momentum in state and local legislatures to promote 'teaching the controversy.' In essence, this practice would introduce 'alternative' views in the classroom for publicly controversial scientific theories, even if those theories are widely accepted in the scientific community. From the piece:
"State and local legislatures in the United States are experimenting with new ways to target the topics taught in science classes, and it seems to be paying dividends. Florida’s legislature approved a bill on 5 May that would enable residents to challenge what educators teach students. And two other states have already approved non-binding legislation this year urging teachers to embrace ‘academic freedom’ and present the full spectrum of views on evolution and climate change. This would give educators license to treat evolution and intelligent design as equally valid theories, or to present climate change as scientifically contentious."
(Source: Nature, "Revamped 'anti-science' education bills in United States find success")
Thoughts from fellow educators? Is the 'teaching the controversy' movement helpful or harmful? Should so-called alternate theories be included in science curricula? As a teacher I find this discussion pretty relevant, and I'm curious how other scientists/educators feel about this!
