Hello, I want to share my story with you.
I just finished my Bachelors and my major was Business Administration. During my four years of study I have taken only a few subjects from computer science (three to be exact) and I really liked them! They were programming methodology, programming abstractions (almost identical to Stanford CS106A and CS106B courses, if you're familiar), as well as Database management (using SQL).
After finishing school I suddenly got this amazing opportunity to get a scholarship on any graduate course I desired in a certain country. My sister is also a computer scientist and I like academic lifestyle, so I decided to try computer science as my masters. Doing masters in Computer science after a different major is very rare as I know, but I like challenges, liked the curriculum and decided to go for it.
I am going to start my studies this September, but things are not going as planned so far: I am not allowed to take certain subjects that are prerequisites to more advances subjects and I was not aware that such a restriction even existed! For example, Discrete mathematics and Algorithmic analysis are the core subjects in Computer Science so I was planning to study them in my first semester, but just today I got a notification that I would have access to only five courses (Data structures, Database, OS, Programming languages and one more), which was kind of a shock.
For now, I'm going to try to persuade whoever is in charge to let me take Algorithmic analysis and discrete mathematics (as well as Object oriented programming). If this does not go well, I was thinking of taking the Data structures course, Database management and programming languages structure. But as these courses are not enough, I might have to take a year off or drop this scholarship altogether after one semester.
What do you think about this situation? I feel very worried and anxious. I know this does not make me sound like a strong person, but I need some advice from people who have had difficulties in their academic lives and some emotional support if possible...
Thank you in advance.
