UK teachers - Retaining and developing the teacher workforce. Study finds teachers are leaving the profession earlier, not returning, and their replacements are only half-qualified.

Talking Points:

  • While there has been a net growth in the number of teachers since 2010, more and more experienced teachers are leaving the profession and are not being tempted back.

  • 55-hour work week (average)

  • Barely half of new teaching vacancies are filled by experienced teachers

I noticed that the study does not state whether or not the growth in the number of teachers matches the growth in the number of students. Also, a loss of 10,000 Secondary School teachers does not bode well when compared to an increase of 20% in secondary students in the next 8 years.

All this in order to teach students to pass an exam rather than teaching for the sake of learning.
