What is the difference between conversion program and pre-masters?
Is conversion program is just a fast paced undergraduate program? I'm not entirely sure. I'm trying to do Masters and I was just wondering whether I should take any of these two, since I'm planning to do a completely different major for my Master program. I am a bachelor in Economics who is trying to do M.S in CS.

Give a man a fish...
....feed him for a day...
It seems this is a valid axiom for teaching. Create self directed learners.
But do we create self directed emotionally stable students?
It seems the going habit is to emotionally bail out students.
The most extreme example would be kids who intentionally fail a class because they don’t like you.
But I have students who brighten up if you pay attention to them.
This is textbook codependency.

Certificates for Bachelor Degree holders
Hi everyone! I’m really interested into looking to all the certificates one can qualify for with a bachelors degree. I have an English degree and I’m looking to branch out. I’m looking specifically for certificates or programs that I can qualify for with the degree—no really Master’s programs though. For example you can take a test to qualify for social work and go through a program to become a teacher with a bachelor’s degree. I’m interested in things/opportunities like these. Thanks!

I'm failing school and starting to become really depressed because of it
The post after this paragraph is literally copy/pasted with a few words changed because I literally am so stressed I cant even think , I was just assigned a 9-paragraph essay due tomorrow and I do not have any grades higher than 65% and the quarter is about to end and if it does with these as my grades then I will most likely fail the grade and not get into a high school unless I get a 3.2 or higher which would be my highest gpa ever by a long shot and is obviously no going to happen because no matter how hard i try, i fail.
I'm 14. I never get good grades. I'm in 8th grade already and I'm still failing my subjects. I procrastinate all the time. I try not to but it's really hard. It's also very hard for me to focus. I have never finished reading a proper book yet since I always end up day dreaming after like 2 pages. It's also the same with listening in lectures. I always end up zoning out and think of something else. My memorization is also really bad. I can never get good grades I hate it. I always blame my adhd for this. Because of this I get depressed alot. I don't think I have a future because of this. I don't have any talent. My self esteem is really low. I'm very weird and I suck at socializing. I get pressured all the time. I hate it. I don't think there's a point in living anymore. I'm nothing special anyways. No talent no nothing. No use in going to school when I'm not going to be anything anyways. still failing. I don't know what to do anymore. I want to tell my parents to stop school because it's very expensive and they're just wasting money on me. I don't know what to do anymore.. There's so much things going on my head right now I can't deal with all of them. (Which is why I decided to copy paste this post) I'm sorry for my bad grammar I hope you guys understand. I have so much things to say but I keep forgetting them so please just ask me questions about anything.

- Read Japanese at a near N5 level
- JLPT N5 or better Japanese comprehension
Some of the topics for the beginner class will include Fundamental Vocabulary, basic grammar, and the first 317 Kanji.

As an Australian, what are my opportunities for university having only finished grade 12? (Queensland)
Hi, I'm 20 years old and after working odd jobs since graduating I've decided I want to work towards a specific career path in counselling. The problem lies in the fact that I kind of, for lack of better words, pissed and farted around in my senior years and didn't get an O.P score. I'm a therapist who would like to advocate for teaching emotional intelligence in schools. Who do I reach out to?
I think that teaching kids about empathy and emotional intelligence in schools would have profound impacts on reducing acts of aggression and increasing the success of our students. Yale has a program for this. But how does one go about getting it implemented in schools? Should I talk to local school boards, my congress representatives, etc.? Should I focus on city level, state level, or both? Who is responsible for making these kinds of changes?

Arizona SEI Bill
I have been tracking an Arizona-based bill (HB 2435), which is currently on track to pass in the next few months.
I've put a tl;dr at the end =P
So one of the lesser known things happening in Arizona Education is a potential MAJOR OVERHAUL to the state's Structured English Immersion program (commonly known as SEI, or ELL programs in other states).
Right now in Arizona, students in the SEI programs are essentially segregated from the rest of the population under a 4-hour block requirement. That means every day, for 4 hours, they are with the same students, same teacher, same classroom. This means that as we try to help them become proficient in English, they are missing on on actual social interaction, limited to their classmates. So they do become proficient in English, but they do not really get much of the practical application or social skills required to succeed in areas where English is the dominate language.
Of course there are benefits to the system in place now, but we have basically rounded up all the students that aren't proficient in English and stuck them in the same classroom for most of the day, away from most every one else on campus. In places along the US/Mexico border (like where I teach), those students are almost 100% Hispanic, so we have segregated Hispanic students away from everyone else just because they aren't fully proficient in English. They do get instruction, and they certainly do improve in English, but they are limited to their classmates and their teacher.
So this bill actually removes that 4-hour block requirement, allowing our students to be more immersed in the school setting. The segregation of students will end, and the students can be exposed to more English and more social situations.
I think its a great change, but in the back of mind I can't ignore the fact that the current system brings forth great improvement in the students English abilities. Without the 4 hour block, the way they gain those skills becomes more difficult to sort out.
In the end, I suspect its a good change, and I think it will greatly help our English-learning students.
TL;DR: SEI students are required to be in 4 hour blocks to learn English. They make great gains in English, but miss out on social interaction and school functions. This bill removes that requirement, and I'm not sure how much of a good thing it will be for the students.

Would it be a good idea for universities (and schools) to guarantee graduation, but issue only grade statements?
By that I mean that instead of being able to show potential employers just proof of graduation (unless asked for more), you're basically forced to make them look through your actual academic history. The guaranteed graduation is meant to counteract any of them simply treating the gradelist as itself proof of graduation and hence not bothering to read it. Basically, think of this idea as a way to force HR departments to pay more attention to each candidate. And why/why not?

17ish years in teaching
My first year or teacher was 2001. I believe it was one the first (if not the first) year of NCLB. This is my version of how things have changed in 17 years.
- First year I “taught” from an overhead and a 27” TV with PPT. Kids took notes on lined paper.
- Second year I taught 110+ kids with 30 being “mainstreamed” IEP student who never been in a regular ed science classroom.
- I was required to make “guided notes” (fill in blank notes) for IEP kids.
- It seems unfair to just give to everyone, so I gave the guided notes to all my students.
- For a few years this was sufficient adaptation.
- Then we were required to give “study guides” beyond textbook homework, worksheets to help IEP students study.
- It seemed unfair to give these study guides to just the IEP students, so I gave them to everybody me.
- Now IEPs are be written where IEP students be given the answer keys to the study guides.
- Now I must develop “test reviews” that are “test like” as possible.
- Now I must give out answer keys to the test reviews.
- On my school website I literally have uploaded: Teacher Notes, Teacher Presentation, Guided Notes, Study Guide, Test Review, and Quizlet for ever single thing I teach.
- Let’s not forget parents can also see my grade book live as I enter each grade!
- I send automated Remind Texts and Google Classroom alerts for every assessment and project.
- I have a webpage dedicated to each long term project with the guidelines, scoring rubric, and examples of good/bad projects.
- I spent the last three days calling the parents of 11 failing students (two with “zeros”) and none of them had any idea what the hell I was talking about.
- I also had to fill out a “failure resolution” form for each kid to document my efforts.
- Wtf is the long term end game of this type of coddling.

Music as an anxiety relief tool? New study, wanna get involved?
I'm doing a study for my master's dissertation and I'm observing the effects of routine on relaxation promotion and anxiety reduction (with an emphasis on routine music listening or watching T.V.). I'm wondering if anybody is interested in doing my study? it's just 20-minutes per day of music listening or watching T.V. for a week and you can do the activity whenever you want in your own home/space (I'll provide the content). You'll also need to do a short questionnaire before and after. It's anonymous once you begin. I'm not starting the study for a week or two but if you're interested just let me know in the comment section or drop me an email (preferably): mc14ojh@leeds.ac.uk

When applying to an university that has a strong political reputation, is it a good idea to mention their ideals in your motivational letter as reason to wish to study there?
For example, one wants to apply to Roskilde University, which has a strong left culture and is often described as "bunch of hippies" even in Denmark.
One is transgender.
Would saying that one of the reasons you wish to study at said university is for their provision of equal and unmolested opportunity to study and work within their facilities? (As in - despite not passing well, one doesn't have to stay in closet when attending lectures.)

Rebranding maths?
I know it sounds ridiculous, but do you ever wonder if school level maths was called something else (maybe Arithmetic but I know it involves more than that) and then maybe starting age 12 you got proper maths lessons more focused on understanding theoretical mathematics than on simply learning and applying algorithms?
Or you could put it together as a group, maths, formal logic and philosophy. I feel like when I was in school no-one really told me what maths was and if I knew I'd have been a lot more excited about it. The most exciting thing I did in maths class was have a race with the boy next to me to get through the problems the fastest. I mean all the useful facts and algorithms are important, but they didn't really have much to do with mathematics. When I was in university I got really interested in mathematical constructivism and I felt like I really did myself a disservice by not doing maths after age 16 which I think I would have if anyone had told me what it was.

your thoughts on productivity apps for education? (x-post /r/teachers)
Hey /r/education, I'm a senior at UC Davis and I made an iPhone app that helps students stay on track with their coursework. It will send them reminders for upcoming assignments/exams and tell them what grade they need on it in order to get or maintain a certain letter grade in the class (e.g "You need an 88% on this in order to get an A in the class").
The app is called Grade Hound and its free for iPhone and iPad.
I'm curious what you guys think of it? Parents, is this something you'd encourage your kids to download? Teachers and school administrators, is this something you'd promote in your school?
The app has been around for awhile but largely has gone under-promoted. I spent the last couple of months on a massive redesign. Now that it's out, I'm trying to get the word out. I'd like to know the opinion of the professionals in the field. My market is largely high school and college students, though I've heard from parents it also works well for middle-schoolers.
Edit The app allows you to enter 2 classes for free. I'd be happy to send you a code to get the "pro" version for free and add unlimited classes.

should every year at school beging with cowardice education where biggest part would be concentrated on bullying and explaining that whoever is bullying weaker ppl is simply a coward coz he is too feared to stand against someone who migh actualy charm them back? and also reminding them that bullying can give them a lot of troubles if child himself or his parents will go to authorities that can deal with bullies in some serious way? obviously education would have to be done in some way that is suitable to childrens age, so it doesnt mess up in their heads. would this decrease amaount of violence ?

is high school teaching what it needs to be?
i was just thinking does high school realy preppare you for life?,to me it does not, 1)it only teaches you to take authority from an authority figure,do the work, and thats it,once you out of high school you lost because thats all you know 2)high school doesnt help at all with, social anxiety, social skills, what it takes to work under a boss ect....i think high schools should focus more on theres things, instead of hard school work, because most of the things in school is forrgot anyways and the only thing that stays in friends, social skills, and coping with work ect... 3)the work in hgih school shouldnt be so extreme, students are young and shouldnt need to focus there whole teenage years on books and reading, plus even if students do badly by the time they old enough for college they mature and rready to study
