I'm curious if there's a community on here for banner and college IT employees to discuss solutions or questions they have about working with banner and their school's IT environment. I know Ellucian has eCommunities, but it doesn't seem very widely used and not a great looking forum. If one doesn't exist, is there enough interest in creating one? What would it be called?

anybody have experience w/ research in education? Need help!
Need help distributing an exam to 30 participants. Each participant will get two sets of exams, one set given at a different time. How can we do this and keep the validity of the exam?
A brief overview of my project is we are comparing how well residents can diagnose diseases using a traditional glass slide versus a digital image they would see on the computer. We wanted to split up these two sets of quizzes (traditional glass slides and digital images) into two days to keep validity since a traditional glass slide pertaining a disease will have a corresponding digital image pertaining to that same disease, and we would not want them to memorize. I've looked up other research on this and there are very few. It seems like people randomized the slides and only gave half? I'm not too sure why they did what they did.

Resourse to know difference between blockchain and cryptocurrency
Part of the confusion around the world and most of us is “what is blockchain” versus “what is cryptocurrency” is due in part that the terms have come into use. In spite of it being represented in a formal definition, the term blockchain evolved from "chain of blocks". Digital currency is a kind of portmanteau of "cryptographic cash". Be that as it may, the key contrast between these ideas needs to do with how conveyed record innovation is utilized.
Please continue reading for some clearer idea on blockchain and cryptocurrency.
Difference between cryptocurrency and blockchain & how they work together
The blockchain is the stage which brings cryptographic forms of money into play. The blockchain is the innovation that is filled in as the conveyed record that structures the system. This system makes the methods for executing and empowers exchanging of esteem and data.
Digital forms of money are the tokens utilized inside these systems to send esteem and pay for these exchanges. Moreover, you can consider them to be apparatus on the blockchain, sometimes filling in as an asset or utility capacity. Different circumstances they are utilized to digitize the estimation of a benefit.
Blockchains fill in as the premise innovation, in which cryptographic forms of money are a piece of the biological system. They go as an inseparable unit, and crypto is frequently important to execute on a blockchain. In any case, without the blockchain, we would not have methods for these exchanges to be recorded and exchanged.
Token less blockchains
If cryptocurrencies are built on the blockchain, can there be a blockchain without a native token?
All things considered, yes and no. As of late, partnerships and undertakings have been trying different things with blockchain innovation, yet the token as an esteemed resource introduces an issue for most associations and consortiums utilizing it. In the event that they don't care for the digital money perspective, then what do organizations escape blockchain? For any establishment, the counter delicate appropriated nature is advantageous, alongside guarantees for a more hack-confirmation condition. Controllers will appreciate the auditability that cryptographic receipts provide– named "triple passage bookkeeping". That is extraordinary and all, however, one of the fundamental advantages of blockchain is as a trust convention to facilitate conceivably untrusting elements. So how might they accomplish this without the mining/approval process?
Rather than working in a no-trust condition, organizations and consortiums work with a little measure of trust since they know who each other are. Since full namelessness isn't essential, utilizing an open agreement calculation like verification of-work is not any more important. Consortiums, rather want to utilize a "ring signatures", which enables them to accomplish a greater part vote effect– for instance 5 of 7. At the point when the base edge of marks is met, the data is said to be approved and added to the blockchain like some other. This agreement style takes into consideration the greater part of the properties of blockchains without utilizing a local token. But since approval can be performed just by a constrained subset all things considered, this is said to be a "private chain."

Seeing a class multiple times per week- need ideas
Crosspost from r/arted since it's a quiet sub.
Hi! Getting ready to teach another year of art to mostly K and 1 students. I have always had classes see me once or twice a week. Each way had it's pros and cons. For the twice a week students, of course this meant extra projects to think of for them. For the first time, this year I'll be seeing at least one class THREE times a week. I'm worried I'll run out of ideas or they will be bored. To complicate things, they will probably be seeing the other art teacher once a week too, so that means art 4x week. The reason for all the art is they are giving classroom teachers some extra preps and need to put the kids somewhere! Any advice or ideas appreciated. Does anyone else see classes more than twice a week? These are K and 1 kids so projects can't be that complicated. Thanks!

Can an education from the philippines be used in America?
I've heard two sides to this. Asking for a friend;
So lets say I wanted to pursue a bachelors and masters in organizational psychology / management. If I get that in the Philippines (preferable cause it's inexpensive and way cheaper compared to the same education from a college in America), can I use that education in America? Seems like all one would have to do is take a board exam.
Two sides to this; one is that some friends have said that America won't accept education of any kind from the Philippines, while on the other hand, a friend of mine has a cousin whose mother got education to be a nurse in the Philippines, then moved over to America and is now making easily $72k+ annually.
Specifically, my friend is planning on going to college at Saint Louis University in Baguio City in the Philippines and then moving back to America to attempt to find a job. He wants to pursue a career in industrial-organizational psychology.
Any information to help my friend and I out about this as well as debunk some rumors and put them to rest would be highly appreciated, please and thank you!

Currently working part time works best for my family situation and not to mention I am unsure about whether I am wanting to be a special ed teacher so I feel like being a para will help give me the time to decide what I want really want to do with my degree. I got an interview at a junior high for a para position tomorrow morning. I am nervous about the interview that they will question why I am applying as a para when I have a degree in special ed. Do you think they will ask me about that? What should I be prepared to say if they ask me why I am applying as a para instead of a special ed teacher? Is this normal for some people with teaching degrees to apply as paras?

Unschooling
I don’t have any background in education, so please forgive me if anything about this post is obvious/over discussed. Also writing this on mobile so hopefully paragraphs work.
I used to follow this lady on Instagram under the ruse that she was a fitness instructor or something. Didn’t take long to realize that her Instagram is mostly just her taking pictures of her kids, which kind of bothers me. ANYWAY she claims on the Instagram to be an “unschooler”; I looked it up on Wikipedia, it’s pretty much not teaching your kids at all? Is this legal? Do I not understand how this system (or lack of system) works?
I agree that the sentiment is nice, and that maybe the testing system is flawed, and that lots that they teach in schools is probably irrelevant. But if my parents had “unschooled” me, my opportunities now (age 21) would be limited and I would be resentful of that.
Please, any insights would be wonderful. I’d love to hear people’s thoughts on the subject of unschooling.

Printing flashcards for studying
We are two students who love using printed flashcards to study. Like a lot of folks, we love using Quizlet to make our flashcards and study, but physical flashcards are better in many cases. After living in a dorm, we found that not having access to a good printer makes it pretty much impossible to print flashcards.
We started printing out flashcards for ourselves and our friends, and would love help more people print their flashcards. We want to launch the service in time for the Fall 2018 school year, and are looking for feedback to make sure we make something people will love.
If you could take a minute to answer a survey at printmyflashcards.com, we would really appreciate it (and we’ll give you 50% off when we launch).

What Can A Teacher do about bad/Misleading state standards?
I have an assignment for one of my education classes and I was reading through the TEKS for 7th grade through 12th grade Social Studies. I am shocked and amazed by so many of the TEKS. It is so clearly exposing only conservative ideas and doesn't even mention segregation or Jim Crow. Only “describe Ronald Reagan’s leadership” and “describe Nixon’s leadership”. They only mention the less disagreeable things they did an not things like the Vietnam War, Watergate or apathy about the AIDS epidemic. There is also no mention of discussing “LBJ’s leadership in the good things he did” or JFK. The words “expansionism” instead of “imperialism”. I could go on and on.
I googled about this because I am so unsettled by this and found this article which discusses this.
https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/10/22/texas-social-studies-standards_n_6029224.html
My question is that the TEKS don't include SO many important things in history. Can teachers discuss with students all of the things not mentioned in TEKS but that are extremely important to the topic being covered? Also, are teachers allowed to implement TEKS while letting students know they are biased and inaccurate to some degree?
Hope to hear back. Thanks!

Union association fees still required after Supreme Court ruling against them.
I recently filled out paperwork to become a teacher in my state and when trying to avoid joining the Union there was a clause about being required to pay association fees even if you don't join the Union. Based on the recent Supreme Court ruling against this practice I was shocked to see this. Am I missing something or is this clause now illegal?

Lost track of my life, wondering if I should go back to school
How do you find what you like and decide which program you will study? or what you want to do for career?
I tend to get interests in things and lose it easily. Maybe I haven't really found what I liked yet.
I already went to culinary school because my mom has suggested me while I wasn't really doing anything. But soon enough I realized I have no passion in cooking after working for few months.
I am already at age of 23, people my age are graduating university/college so I don't want to waste anymore time to later realize it wasn't my passion.

What to expect from a Forced transition meeting?
Hi all- my colleague is facing a forced transition to a different school in the district, and is fighting it. I have been asked by her to be a part of the committee that helps decide whether or not she is foced to move (it is called the professional rights and responsibilities committee).
A little background: She is a 15+year veteran of the district, was evaluated this year by the principal, and received a positive evaluation. She is an AP teacher where 22/23 students received a 4 or a 5 on the test (majority 5s). A parent of a freshman student has complained about her teaching (she has complained also about a 15+ year veteran of the biology dept, a 10+year PE teacher), and now the principal wants to move the foreign language teacher to the middle school.
The reasoning is: A few times this year in staff meetings the teacher brought up complaints about how teachers feel like parents can cause us to lose our jobs, we feel pressure and a lack of support from the admin, and overall stress. The principal also lists that it would be valuable to have a high school teacher in the middle school to help bridge the curriculum.
According to our contract, a forced transfer can only occur if this statement is satisfied: "District- initiated transfers shall be based exclusively on the legitimate, educationally-related needs of the district".
Do you have any advice on how to fight this? Or know what will happen in the meeting? The meeting will take place with the teacher in question, the superintendent, the principal, and another union rep.

How do you address a trans/nonbin student if the parent is against it?
Good morning. I've recently came across a discussion topic where I volunteer, and something was said that rubbed me the wrong way. The program is educational, so I would assume it falls under the regulations of DOE. I know the DOE in NY has said that schools and educations must honor a student's gender identity, this includes names and pronouns. Now the place I work recently brought up the topic of trans and non binary students.
Almost by default a program leader will read a roster and then ask, "Do you like that name, do you have a nick name?" and I've heard some silly names be accepted from Skater to Brush. The issue then arose when someone asked: What if a child answers that they prefer a different pronoun and or name?
Now to me I am perfectly OK with honoring this. Using different names from legal names (due to immigration) has been a staple of my life since I was a kid, and honoring a pronoun, is not a big change, might trip a few times but the change will be honored to the best of my abilities. Calling a hypothetical kid named Lawrence, as El, Lars, Laura, Larry or Lark makes no difference to me, so long as its not a bad word.
I was told if a pronoun or the 'nick name' is too different from the registered gender, they by In Loco Parentis must honor the parent's wishes. Now, that did not sit well with me. Especially when they say they are all inclusive. We have Zero Tolerance protocols and it includes if there a student who has a different orientation/creed or race and they are being bullied we will treat it as a bullying issue and sit kids down to discuss how the behavior is unacceptable, and if the issue continues we go through the discipline system. Essentially from my understanding we use In Loco Parentis when it comes to discipline, feeding, transportation, supervision, providing medical care etc.
So my question is, if you are in a state that states schools and like organizations need to honor the gender preference of a student, what happens in the case if the parent or guardian is against or vehemently against their child's desire? Do you honor student or parent? Schools and like programs should be safe areas, so my natural inclination would be to honor the student even if they are under 16 or would an educator be legally bound to the parent's wishes, which would contradict being inclusive?
If you could provide backing sources it would be helpful.
Thank you!

Need to Get into Boarding School
It has been my dream since I was in middle school to get into a nice boarding school like Exeter or Hotchkiss, for example. However, my life got pretty hectic around eighth grade and I never got the chance to apply. I'm not going to bore you, but trust me when I say that there is good reason as to why I have been to three different prestigious private day schools, and have still only completed up to one semester of my sophomore year at seventeen. Despite the facts, and put as humbly as possible, I am still a very intelligent student and have received acceptable grades throughout my academic career. A's and B's - one or two C's as well, understandably given the conditions - and have taken honors courses whenever possible. My chances of living up my dream have become fairly grim at this point and I have thought of even hiring a hacker to hack me into a schools enrollment. I post this because, where there is a will, there is most likely a way. Does anybody have any advice?
Not sure if I posted this in the correct subreddit also, it was the most suitable one I could find.

Should governments subsidise homeschooling?
This question was inspired by the The Infographics Show's video School vs Homeschool: Which Student Does Better?. I personally don't know anyone who was homeschooled, but perhaps that's unsurprising.
Advantages of homeschooling | Disadvantages of homeschooling |
---|---|
Higher SAT results and admission rates into prestigious universities | Homeschooling parent(s) will need to be competent in the appropriate subjects |
No or comparatively low chance of bullying, school massacre, drug use or teen pregnancy | Potential lack of friendships |
Public schools may be poor quality | Homesschooling parent(s) might not be able to work as much or at all |
Some experts claim we aren't having enough family time, so why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone by having kids homeschooled by their family | Some parents homeschool in order to brainwash their children with religious dogma or conspiracy theories |
"Homeschooling focuses on learning and mastering concepts, not scoring good grades" | Attention may need to be divided among multiple children if you have multiple children |
Public schools and private schools may stifle the development of curiosity and critical acumen | Potential lack of social skills and experiences due to lack of experiences with interpersonal challenges |
Can focus on tackling individual weaknesses and fostering individual strengths | Professional connections, which might be essential in certain fields of work, might not form |
The cost of homeschooling to parents is far lower than the private school costs, or how much the government spends per student in public schools | Not all parents want to be teachers, and homeschooling parents need high levels of patience |
Some parents have justified worries that public schools might teach nationalist propaganda or at least, poor quality material; while religious private schools teach religious dogma |
Personally, I am glad I wasn't homeschooled. Even though I didn't focus that much on friendships (and I didn't bother with intimate relationships at all) in high school, at least high school provided me with educational resources (e.g lab equipment) that would be unfeasible for my family to acquire and set up. Sure, going to public school in Australia is a far from perfect experience, but at least it helped me learn to deal with interpersonal challenges.
But back to the main question, do the benefits of homeschooling mean that it would be a good idea for governments to encourage and subsidise homeschooling?
