There’s a culture in college with alcohol at the center, and it isn’t just infiltrating Greek life. The stories that make the news are often hazing gone wrong with pledges dying from alcohol poisoning. Alcohol use and abuse, however, are seen all over college campuses. College-aged individuals are among the most likely to binge drink, and the crime statistics that accompany these numbers show just how serious drinking in college has become. In fact, schools have cracked down on substance use, not allowing any hard liquor on campus.
Despite the strict policies, students are still consuming alcohol. However, with the help of campus safety and security, students drinking on campus are held responsible for their actions. Has alcohol-related crime declined with the new policies, or are more students charged with alcohol and drug violations than prior years? Using Office of Postsecondary Education (OPE) Campus Safety and Security crime data from 2015 to 2017, we investigated how universities’ crime rates have changed over the years and if their enacted policies have had any impact.
It’s important to note the reported statistics don’t necessarily indicate a higher prevalence of drug or alcohol use on college campuses. Rather, they could be an indication that college campuses have active student conduct committees and police forces that are more vigilant. Schools with the most violations may crack down harder and report their crime rates more than others – a not-so-negative trait for a school to have. With that in mind, keep reading to see what we found.
