Professor agreed to write recommendation letter and went through it without following any of the requirements. I have spent so much money on application to graduate school, only to have my application put in pending because his letter lacked letterhead/signature. Please help!

Hi everyone, I’m currently in the process of applying for graduate school.

Story behind my letter: I informed my professor in advance regarding my upcoming application, and asked if it was possible for him to write one of my 4 letters of evaluation. My professor agreed, and had requested for me to write it myself, and he was going to do the final edits before submitting my letter in to the main application website. I appreciated that he did not want to miss out any positive detail, and I had no problem of drafting the letter myself. However, after sending him my draft, he began to ignore my emails and my other efforts into meeting him. I camped out at my school whenever I could (I worked full time), and finally met him in person after several attempts. He agreed once again to submitting my letter, and he finally did. However, I was not aware of whether he made any changes to my original draft, as he did not show me a copy of the letter.

I thanked him and sent in all of my application, costing roughly $4000. A few weeks went by and I started hearing back from the schools that I’ve been applying to, informing me that his letter did not meet requirement. It did not have a letterhead, a signature, nor was it pdf’ed, and that my application was going to be put on hold for several schools. I realized how terrible it must’ve looked because it obviously looked like I wrote my own letter.

I have since tried to get into contact with him once again and asked if he could resend the letter with all the required details added. He agreed. It has been a month since, and I have not heard back from him. My emails have all been ignored. He picked up first phone call, and when he realized it was me, he quickly agreed to the request. Then I never heard from him again. Now, all my calls go to voicemail.

I am completely devastated and I have no idea what to do regarding my application. And I am bitter because I feel like he could have easily said no to my request, but didn’t do that and instead had me pay so much and my future is in jeopardy.

What should I do in this case? Do I have the right to contact the dean of the department and explain my situation? Do I just leave it as is and let the whole thing go and he can just walk away without any repercussion?
