Questions about IB program grading

So I’ve finally gotten into the pre-IB program and I have a few questions.

I have a personal mentor who helps me organize homework and such, but she also told me that the only thing that counts is the final exam. She doesn’t teach anything in IB so I wonder about how much she knows. I was also told you get something called effort grades i think, based on how active you are in the lesson and verbal, but why care about grades if it’s only the final exam that counts? This may probably make me sound dumb, but I actually want to do the work and effort, but right now I just see it as meaningless if there is literally no point of it in the end.

I wasn’t provided any information on how the grades work, what grades there are and what counts etc. So I would appreciate if someone could tell me. Thanks in advance.
