Conundrum - sensitivity versus convention

I teach media production in south Louisiana, in everything from writing for broadcast, to voice announcing, as well as broadcast journalism and television production.

Some of my students say words outside of standard broadcast pronunciation: expecially, liberry, misres (mrs.), ax (ask), among others. I believe I am justified in correcting that, as someone won’t be anything other than a local nor regional talent using non-standard broadcast pronunciation or a regional accent. I have lots of flavors of accents, and in my announcing class, I teach the Lessac method (modified) to alter vocal accents.

Students have grumbled that I want to change who they are, and in some ways, I do: I want them to be able to compete with anyone else. Sometimes, that means giving up bad vocal habits and regional dialect in favor of what employers want.

Do you believe I am justified with correcting regional accents and usage in favor of a more typical representation, or am I being pedantic?
