Hello everyone!
Okay, so I was without a job from July up until today. I accepted a job offer to work as a dedicated aide at a public charter school, high school level, 9th grade. I’ll be making $18 an hour, with full benefits and will work with 2 students, who I met today on my first day.
As luck would have it, I received a call from the second school, a public school, I had interviewed with today and they wanted to speak about offering me the job. I was unable to take the call but heard their voicemail and saw the email. This is for a paraprofessional educator title 1 position at a high school. I looked at the pay chart and would be making anywhere from $18-24 (would probably start at Step 1) and I’m uncertain about the benefits. This is about a 20-22 minute drive from me and I wouldn’t be working with just 2 students.
I was offered the first job (the one I took) last week and didn’t think I’d get the second one and accepted. The charter school is a 12 minute drive and everyone is incredibly nice and I like my two students so far. Classes are small and the teachers seem really great. I have an almost 1 hour lunch break because both students go to an advisory class after lunch.
My dilemma is: I am in school to become a high school English teacher and I am really looking forward to this opportunity to see classrooms from the inside (I graduated in 2008 and things have changed soooo much.) I just wanted to see what people say about working at a charter school vs. a private school!
