Thoughts/Opinions on a GED>CC>University?

I’m 17, ive deeply messed up my high school career and bc of personal/health/family issues my odds of graduating with my class are slim. I’ve been trying to make a reasonable plan for my future. I’ve thought of testing out and getting my GED, then going to a CC for two years and from there transfer to a university. I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to go to any university in California with my tuition paid for. But due to my low GPA and lack of graduation requirements I’m afraid I’m going to waste the opportunity. I was told, going to a CC before a university would help the GPA problem as colleges would look at how well I do in CC rather than hs. Is it too difficult to get by in the working world with a GED if I have cc/college experience by the time? Any information would be so helpful to me TYIA
