School has it backwards...

I have a younger brother who's currently a rising junior in high school, going into the IB program. His whole life revolves around school: waking up early to get to school, grinding through long school days, sleeping late after spending hours working on homework, school projects, and extracurricular activities, waking up the next day to do it all over again... During the summer it's the same with summer classes, mandatory volunteer work, and test prep. He hates it.

Sometimes I wonder if school is even helping him or not. Like yes, he's technically gaining more knowledge, but at what cost? I came across this article the other day and it highlights my biggest fear: that the education system is destroying his innate love of learning. I felt some of this when I was in school (I'm about 10 years older than him), but I feel like it's far worse now.

What do you guys think?
