Terminology: "Afro-Americans"

Reading through an older history textbook that I'm planning to have my students read from. It uses the term "Afro-American" frequently, and includes the sentence "because he was a black." (with regard to not being allowed to enter a certain establishment in the American 1960s.)

I'm wondering if the terminology is appropriate. I'm writing worksheets to go along with the text and instinctively want to write "African American" but wonder if I should indicate to students that it is a more politically correct/proper term. (and I'm also wondering if that is indeed true).

I'd write something like "your textbook uses the term "Afro-American, but that sounds weird, so we're going to say "African American." instead."

Is this a non-issue or is it something I SHOULD make an "issue" of?
