In the U.K. at least. We always used to read aloud in lessons in secondary school and almost everyone read in a stiff, robotic sort of voice. I thought that they just weren’t good at reading, but when we read independently everyone finished at about the same time, so that wasn’t an issue.
I found the term ‘reading with expression’ today. I always did it because my grandmother read a lot of books to me, and made me read aloud to her too.
I know it’s not one of the most important things, but wouldn’t it come hand-in-hand with learning to read more fluently at ages 7/8?
I think it would also make reading in lesson less stressful. If everyone could be sure that they didn’t sound stupid or whatever.
