Late Entry Mandarin immersion in 2nd grade

I just found out that my 2nd grade son’s new school offers mandarin immersion and I would love for him to join the program , but I’m afraid it maybe too late for him as other kids have started in kinder/1st grade. Any suggestions or experience with late entry? We have no mandarin background. My son English language/reading proficiency is advanced so I’m not worry on that category. Any suggestions would help. Thank you
