Early childhood educators: what are your positive discipline hacks?

Here are mine:

Getting them to be quiet: Whispering. Don’t yell, whisper. Works EVERY time if you do it theatrically. I often whisper throughout story time and never have an issue with disruptions.

Getting kids to line up: Give one kid a “surprise message” to deliver to the other kids. Can be literally anything (my last one was “miss alternativelie’s favorite color is purple). Tell the other kids that their friend has a surprise message for them, but they can only hear it once they have lined up and gathered their things.

Dealing with a meltdown: Redirect attention by telling them you have something to show them, then take them for a walk and find something interesting to look at. If the reason that they’re melting down is they don’t want to do something they have to, warn them that they’re still going to have to do the thing, but once it’s been done, they can tell their friends what they saw.

“Magic hands”: whenever a kid gets hurt, Itell then I have magic hands and tell them a little story about how I got them. Then I rub my hands together so they’ll get warm, and I tell the kids they got warm with magic and invite them to feel my palm. Then I sprinkle the magic on them (making sure Idont touch them unless they have told me it’s ok) and tell them the magic will make them feel a little better, and now they have magic too
