Parents PLEASE say no to your child sometimes..

Being better than your parents doesn’t mean you never give consequences, and believe everything they say. As an educator we can’t TEACH as much as we have to manage behaviors, and talk to parents… because teachers or other kids are blamed. PLEASE limit screen time and TALK to them. Too many kids don’t know how to speak to other humans! Speech and Language therapy has doubled! Occupational therapy too! A lot of kids can not turn a page and haven’t colored or painted. .. I could go on but PLEASE think about it.

difference of educational system work or sticker pricer of ivy league, and students dilemma, student loan in US just give me some sort of cultural shock

I'm from East Asia and Canada. Maybe I did my undergrad in both Canada and East Asia. My university charges me $5000 CAD per year for an arts degree. Tuition for my law degree in East Asia was $1,000 per year. The tuition for medical school in my country is about US$2,000 per year. Most of better public unviersity Engeering schools is $1,000 per year, the tuition is just the same for most of public school, better one.$1,000 per year

Students in EastAsia never turn down a good school just for sake of 1000 USA tuition, unless he choose it for Proximity reason

When I saw the price tag for an Ivy League school, I just had some kind of culture shock and the price tag. Very talented ivy kids either parents foot bills, or sign up the loans, or access needs-based financial aid. Or they just have to go lower tier school for schooling. If they stud Engineering, they can pay it off quicker. If it's art degree, it could be trapped for loan forgiveness.

The difference of educational system work or sticker pricer of ivy league, and students dilemma, student loan in US just give me some sort of cultural shock in general.

Education from every state

I have a question. Since New Mexico is ranked #50th in education, right? And California is ranked #20th.

My question is what if an elementary/middle/high school student from New Mexico moved to California, will the student have harder time in California, due to the education being marked #20th? And New Mexico marked #50th?

Right now I have it planned to get my bachelors in art education geared 1-6 (I don’t know if I want to do creative arts therapy or art education). However I wanted to look at some bachelors programs that would help steer me more in the direction of creative arts therapy. What would be some good programs? I know you can do social work or psychology but are there any others?

Are there ways parents can-should prepare their kids for schooling in a place not their home country?

Here, I'm not exactly talking about families in crisis because for them, things would be complicated enough. I'm speaking more about people who would move for work and that. Adults seem so enchanted with, for instance, moving to America but you get the idea many don't consider how things will be for their kids, in a practical sense. I, honestly, feel like it's why some kids get into trouble socially, educationally and otherwise. I also think it's harder to reach those who don't see or find meaning in say the first few months. It would wreak havoc on one's mental health, too!

Magoosh GRE subscription with 520 days remaining

Attention everyone,

I currently have a Paused plan for my Magoosh GRE subscription with 520 days remaining. This plan includes premium access along with admissions support. However, the premium support is shown as expired and I am in communication with the customer service to renew it. Let's see what happens there.

Originally priced at $111, I'm offering it for $100 since it's unused and practically new and heavily discounted compared to the current price of $168. That's a $68 difference.

Please note that this subscription is specifically for GRE preparation.

I'm seeking a platform where I can sell this subscription, but I'm unfamiliar with any GRE-related channels on platforms like Telegram or Reddit. If you know of any suitable channels, please reach out to me.

This will be the only time I post this message here. Feel free to direct message me with any inquiries.

Thank you!

Can a professor kick out a student from the class for not following safety protocols?

We were conducting practical work on a subject related to an electric motor. We started the electric motor, checked how it worked, and took readings of voltage, current, and frequency. After recording our data, we decided to approach the teacher for verification. However, as we barely took a step away from the engine stand, our teacher abruptly declared, 'The lesson is over for you due to your failure to follow safety protocols. You left the motor running at full power.' I was taken aback by this as he hadn't explicitly informed us about the safety protocols, and we were still in close proximity to the motor. Is this legally permissible?

Teacher asked student to break rules

I'm on a course that requires coursework, we are supposed to submit it on the colleges website. The teacher is absent for the next few weeks and failed to make a submission task on the website, their solution is to get a student to collect the coursework and send it to them. Its previously been explained that we are not allowed to share our coursework with other students, this is a rule from the awarding body.

I've explained that I don't feel comfortable sharing my work/breaking the rules to another teacher who said it was unacceptable to require students to do this.

If I miss the submission date because of this do I have any recourse? And are there any places to complain to a regulatory organisation for something like this.

I assume its important to mention I am in the UK.

Have you ever had a coworker whether in school or workplace that just learned things extraordinarly fast?Someone who just had to read something and knew exactly what it mean almost instantly? What was odd about them? Did they have any strategies or it was just something they could do without really explaining? And if there was social contact, did you ever ask what was their motivation or how they mastered such discipline to learn so effectively?

Record numbers of pupils in England absent for long periods, DfE data shows

Record numbers of pupils in England were absent for long periods last year, with one in 50 missing at least half of their lessons, according to official data showing absences remain far higher than pre-Covid levels.
The updated Department for Education figures show 150,000 children at state schools were classed as severely absent in 2022-23 – 30,000 more than the year before and 150% higher than the 60,000 who were severely absent in 2018-19, before the pandemic.
The overall attendance figures showed small improvements compared with 2021-22 but school leaders and experts said much more needed to be done.

Geoff Barton, the general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said: “Advertising slogans and attendance hubs are just not going to make a tangible difference to pupils who are missing days or weeks of school at a time. We have to be far more ambitious.

“We need greater mental health support for children who are suffering from anxiety and depression. There needs to be a network of support available to allow all pupils to feel able to attend school regularly, and this can only be achieved if public services are funded appropriately.”
The number of pupils classed as persistently absent – out of school for 10% or more of sessions – fell compared with 2021-22, from 22.5% to 21.2%, but remains substantially higher than before 2020, when about 11% of pupils were persistently absent. In secondary schools, 26% of pupils are persistently absent compared with 16% in primary schools.
Disadvantaged children or those with caring responsibilities had acute levels of absence, with pupils receiving free school meals twice as likely to be absent than their peers. The Carers Trust said 39% of young carers were persistently absent and missed an average of 23 days of school last year.
Andy McGowan, the Carers Trust’s policy manager, said: “These figures should ring alarm bells in government, showing all too starkly how being a young carer can have a devastating impact on children’s education and future prospects.
“There are 1 million young carers in the UK – that’s two in every classroom – including at least 15,000 children caring for over 50 hours each week. By selflessly looking after loved ones they’re saving the state millions in social care costs and deserve targeted support.”
The national absence rate fell year on year, from 2.4% to 2.1%, with illness the most common reason given. But there was a slight rise in the percentage of unauthorised absences, including those on unauthorised family holidays.
Concerns over absence are prompted by evidence that pupils who are repeatedly absent get lower exam grades. The Department for Education’s data shows only 11% of severely absent and 35% of persistently absent pupils gaining grades 4 or above in GCSE English and maths, compared with 68% of all pupils.

Earlier this year the DfE announced funding for “attendance mentors” offering support for pupils and their families in 10 of the worst-affected areas, as well as increasing fines for extended absences.
A classroom with empty school desks and chairs
Fines for unauthorised absence from school in England to rise by 33%
Read more
But an independent evaluation of one mentoring pilot operating in Middlesbrough found mixed results after its first year: while attendance improved for half of pupils taking part, it worsened for 36%.
Catherine McKinnell, the shadow schools minister, said: “We seem to be in a downward spiral when it comes to persistent and unauthorised absence, with worrying numbers of children missing vital time at school.”
McKinnell said Labour would tackle absences through a combination of funding mental health professionals in secondary school and free breakfast clubs in primary school.
Schools in Scotland have reported even higher levels of absence, with figures published earlier this week revealing that 41% of secondary school and 32% of primary school pupils were persistently absent in 2022-23.

How hopeful are you that cellphone bans during school hours would significantly improve student engagement and performance?

For context: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/31/technology/florida-school-cellphone-tiktok-ban.html?unlocked_article_code=1.e00.87bT.6PbPZwqHrhZ-&smid=url-share

I thought this illuminating news story about a Florida school district enacting a strictly enforced cellphone ban during the entire school day showed potentially promising initial results for improving student behavior and academic engagement. It seems like a potentially very valuable social experiment worth scaling up.

A lot has been written in recent years on the deleterious effects of constant cellphone access and usage on students' mental development and academic performance. So I'm more surprised that such bans hadn't been enacted years earlier in most school districts.

So I wanted to hear the perspectives of other educators here if they notice momentum for or feel optimistic about stricter, more comprehensive cellphone ban policies in more school districts in light of the news story above to help meaningfully address the various trends in academic and behavioral deficiencies among students that have stood out in recent years.

Truancy and enrollment after moving states

My teen got pulled out of school back in November before getting enrolled into another school when we moved states and we weren't aware of the enrollment process here. It's been difficult to get him into a school that can accommodate his needs but I would like to get him in ASAP so he can catch up and not get any more behind. Where do I start? He previously had an IEP and was attending speech therapy services through his old school so I would like to set him up with similar services so he can succeed at a new school.

I like neuroscience but..

I really am interested in neuroscience and studying it as a career path for the future, but I’m really struggling with science. I’m doing my GCSEs currently and I’m getting C in chemistry and B in biology, I’m really not understanding chemistry.

I’m definitely more right brained and getting A/A* in English based subjects. (English lang/lit, history, Religious studies etc)

Do you think it would be better to choose something else? I know people might say “well if you really want it you can do it” but I have ADD and I really struggle to study stuff I don’t understand and don’t enjoy 😭

I know I will enjoy it when I’m learning it in university but if I’m struggling with science at GCSE level, I’m not sure how I will preform next year in A level.

OneSchool Global HQ raided by Australian Tax Office

Fleecing the flock: Exclusive Brethren businesses raided by Tax Office

The politically connected sect known as the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church preaches a “hatred” for the world. Women are treated as second-class citizens and homosexuality is not tolerated.

By Michael Bachelard

MARCH 23, 2024

The Australian Tax Office conducted an extraordinary unannounced raid this week on the global headquarters of businesses run by the conservative Christian sect the Exclusive Brethren searching for evidence of misuse of funds by high-net-worth individuals in the church.

Global leader and Sydney-based “Man of God” Bruce D. Hales had travelled overseas at the time of the raid, but former members of his flock believe he has returned to hold meetings this weekend.

The sect, now known as the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church (PBCC), is a closed organisation which preaches a “hatred” for people outside the church. Women are treated as second-class citizens and homosexuality is not tolerated.

Its followers, known to each other as “saints”, believe Hales is “so close to the Lord Jesus that he can feel his heartbeat”.

Hales, who travels the world in a $20,000 per hour private jet, tells his flock to “charge the highest price to the worldly people” – including governments and other businesses – in a doctrine known as “spoiling the Egyptians”. In 2002 he preached: “The world is there for our using up of it … the world is there to take what we want from it, and leave everything we don’t want. Spoil the Egyptians as quick and as fast as you can.”

Starting on Tuesday, Australian Tax Office officials swept into an address in the “Precinct” in Herb Elliott Avenue in the Sydney suburb of Olympic Park, and raided the head offices of a number of Brethren-run companies and its school system, OneSchool Global. Investigators confiscated documents, computers, phones and other material.

The ATO declined to comment on the raid, saying it could not discuss details of the tax affairs of any individual or entity. However, a document obtained by this masthead shows the raid was an “access without prior notice” visit run by the ATO’s Private Wealth – Behaviours of Concern section, which is within its Wealth program.

A senior staff member of the Brethren’s “parent company”, Universal Business Team, or UBT, downplayed the raid in a note to staff as the organisation “working with the ATO to support with a regular audit”.

But ATO documentation confirms it conducts access without prior notice raids “only in exceptional circumstances including suspected tax evasion, fraud, secrecy or concealment, and where we have a reasonable belief that documents may be disposed of, altered or destroyed”.

This masthead has also learned that businesses in Goulburn whose owners run the Brethren’s public-facing charity, the Rapid Relief Team, were also raided by the Tax Office on Tuesday.

Church spokesman and Melbourne businessman Lloyd Grimshaw said the church “does not operate any businesses or occupy offices at the location where the ATO has visited”, but added there were “a lot of members of our church, including senior members, who work really hard to build profitable businesses”.

He did not answer a question about whether the church would co-operate with the Tax Office investigation.

A spokesperson for UBT said the company had “always sought to abide by the rules set by Australian Taxation Office, and of course we are cooperating fully with their current information gathering process.”

This masthead has spoken to six former members of the religion who believe the Tax Office investigation was examining what the church calls its “ecosystem” – a complex web of interwoven businesses and tax-free entities including charities and schools. The sources cannot be identified because they fear retribution against their families who are still inside the sect.

The MySchool website shows that between government funding of about $40 million last year as well as millions in tax-exempt donations from the flock and its attached businesses, each Brethren student’s education is funded at between $30,000 and $50,000.

However, they are prevented by their religion from going to university, and young Brethren women are destined, after a short stint in family businesses, to be married with children.

The Plymouth Brethren Christian Church

The church, which began in the 1800s in the UK but is now led by Hales from Sydney, preaches a radical doctrine of separation from “worldly” people. The doctrine allows its Brethren members to do business, but they are forbidden from eating, drinking or socialising with their non-Brethren neighbours.

They are also banned from listening to radio or watching television and their access to the internet is strictly controlled by one of the companies raided this week, the Universal Business Team.

But the church and its members have donated to and extensively lobbied conservative governments internationally, most famously campaigning actively for the re-election of the Howard government in 2004 while trying to conceal their involvement. They work hard to keep political donations secret.

They have also been highly successful at winning government contracts, including recently lucrative contracts for the supply of COVID tests.

A Brethren man can never be subservient to a woman, which means no woman can be an executive. A senior international business executive, speaking on the basis of anonymity, said this has made it increasingly difficult for Brethren companies to pitch work to clients with diversity requirements.

The doctrine of separation also means that members who step out of line on either religious or financial matters can be excommunicated. Former member Craig Stewart said he had lost his family, home and business when he was “withdrawn from”. Recently, the fact that his father died was kept from him and the rest of the Brethren congregation for almost four weeks.

“The normal PBCC funeral service was not held and my father’s body was secretly taken an hour away, from Katoomba to Penrith, and buried. His resting place beside my mother, his wife of over 60 years, is empty,” Stewart said.

Stewart, who runs a Facebook page “Exclusive Brethren / PBCC the truth about Bruce D Hales”, said the church had also held special prayer meetings to pray for his “removal from this earth”. “My sons and grandsons, down to as young as five, are praying for my demise because I have publicly spoken out about the practices in the PBCC under Bruce Hales,” he said.

Ben Woodbury, another former member, said he left because he was gay, which made living in the church “the most traumatic thing in my life to date”. He was later excommunicated.

“I live a very peaceful life now and sometimes the juxtaposition between my two lives, inside the Brethren and out – I feel like a foreigner in my own country. It was so toxic.”

He said church leaders had told him his only option was to become a “straight converted Christian man”, which would involve “total submission to our brother, Bruce Hales, and to the Lord and Christ”.

Woodbury is known as u/excultboy on TikTok and has posted about his experiences. “I used to get a happy birthday text from my mum every year ... and now I’ve gone public, they’ve been told not to have anything to do with me at all,” he said.

The ecosystem

The purpose of the PBCC’s “ecosystem”, as stated in internal documents sighted by this masthead, is to “maintain the Community’s lifecycle”, but particularly to provide funding for the Brethren’s schools which are reserved for the church’s students.

Ordinary Brethren individuals and businesses are strongly encouraged to spend their money with companies run by the church leaders, such as consulting firm Universal Business Team (UBT).

Documents produced for a recent “Strive” forum to advertise these projects to the PBCC’s flock say UBT turns over up to $500 million a year. The profits, according to the documents, are “invested in” 124 Plymouth Brethren schools and other charities such as public-facing charity the Rapid Relief Team.

But one insider, speaking on condition of anonymity for his own safety, said the commercial enterprises appeared to make considerably more money than was distributed to the charities.

“I think the Tax Office will be looking at where all the money actually goes.”

The insider said UBT charges Brethren businesses between $30,000 and $150,000 for two hours of consulting, but most of the consultants are working for free “thinking they’re doing it for the testimony of Bruce Hales”, meaning the gross profits of the business were about 80 per cent.

In the recent “Strive” forum the ecosystem’s purpose was said to be “striving towards securing our financial future so we can fund our way of life, indefinitely”. UBT, whose offices were raided, is described in the documents as “our parent company”.

“Our leadership team comprises members of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church and professionals from the wider community,” the documents say.

It is also the central company from which members rent phones and computers. These are fitted with Brethren approved software, including a program called Streamline 3 which means UBT administrators can monitor the browsing history and GPS location of Brethren members and remotely capture images of their screen.

The charities

One of the charities funded by the ecosystem, the Rapid Relief Team (RRT), is described by Woodbury as an attempt to rehabilitate the Brethren’s poor global reputation, and to help its lobbying of politicians.

In a recent Brethren conference, Strive 23, one of the Rapid Relief Team’s aims for the year was that: “Every locality to engage with a person of influence or status at a local level”.

Woodbury, a former Rapid Relief Team volunteer, said it seemed to be a “cleverly co-ordinated PR instrument” of the church.

Other charities are set up, some with tens or hundreds of millions of dollars of funds, with the ability to give loans for housing, to fund Brethren travel for religious meetings, and to help the Brethren poor. Though many are constituted to help the “general community in Australia”, the only beneficiaries are members of their own church.

The Brethren are also establishing their own supermarkets, Campus and Co. Many stores are based on the school grounds and they are staffed by unpaid Brethren women and charge a premium to the flock for their groceries. Brethren members are expected to make a certain percentage of their weekly purchases through Campus and Co.

It is dangerous for PBCC members to question their leaders on these matters, or to fail to comply with orders, because the punishment for questioning the Man of God can include being “withdrawn from” – excommunicated.

Bruce Hales, who has led the church since his father died in 2003, has become increasingly wealthy in recent years, as have his sons.

In 2022, this masthead reported that Gareth Hales bought a two-hectare, $9.5 million house in the NSW holiday destination of Dural, set behind a gated entry with a tennis court, heated swimming pool and a golf driving range.

A few months earlier, Nerolie Hales, the wife of Dean, spent $7.5 million buying a 4116 square metre home in Epping, in Sydney’s north-western suburbs. And another senior Brethren man, Gavin Grace, of Ballarat, broke the Dural house price record, paying $14 million for a resort-style mansion, which he bought without a mortgage.

COVID contracts

The New Daily reported last year that Gareth and Charles Hales were suppliers for more than $1 billion worth of contracts for COVID-19 personal protective equipment in the UK via Unispace Global Limited, and Dean Hales was linked to a network of companies that won more than $30 million in government contracts to supply COVID tests to Australian governments.

And a Brethren company, Westlab Pty Ltd, owned by another senior Brethren man, Gavin Grace, won tenders with the Department of Health between August 2020 and August 2022 worth a combined $106 million to supply rapid antigen tests.

Bruce Hales, who is an accountant, was listed as the “independent auditor” on Westlab’s accounts.

This article was published in The Age, Sydney Morning Herald and other associated newspapers.

What are the expectations to make teachers go on field trips?

I was going to have gone into more detail about my situation. I teach a class once a week at a local high school, and they want me to go on a field trip that I'm not thrilled about. That's not the point of this post.

Here are some better questions:

To what extent are teachers expected to go on field trips?

If teachers don't want to go on a field trip, how can they handle the situation?

Are teachers ever pressured into going? How can this be avoided?

A teacher who doesn't want to go can theoretically say "Find another chaperone or cancel the whole darn trip. Either way, count me out!" That is probably not the best attitude though.

I got my High School Diploma as an Adult

I (+18 yo) successfully achieved my High School Diploma through an online adult program without the GED route. The exams and finals weren’t monitored, which allowed me to complete the program easily and really fast, it took me about 6 months. I recommend opting for a High School Diploma over a GED, as it can ease the process for entering college and enhance a bit job opportunities.

I'm feeling very uncomfortable about the way whiteness is being discussed in academia.

Im not a fan of the new culture of academics feeling the need to justify their worthyness for a job role in spite of their whiteness, I feel it sets the precedent that all white people should be expected to do the same.

Today during a presentation a white member of staff felt the need to bring up that the opportunities department she works in (3 members of staff) were white. "We are a very white department"

She went on to say that despite being white they all tried their hardest to understand the lived experiences of other demographics.

I really feel that this sort of behaviour is putting an onus on white people to assure people of colour that they aren't racist, (which is so sus anyway) rather than affording white people (as we should with all people) the presumption of innocence and the plea of no case to answer.

If a black professor started his presentation by assuring us that despite his blackness he was good person that didn't fall into negative stereotypes it would certainly and very understandably make black people feel uncomfortable too, even I as a white person would feel uncomfortable.

This felt awful and I really feel like a sort of anti whitness or at least a form of white skepticism and suspicion in academia is now just the norm.

All this just one week after another much older professor said that he shouldn't be first to speak on his area of academic study (African domestic policy) because he was a "white Anglo saxon"

He could have just said that the doctor in the room who was African, has more experience on the matter and as an esteemed guest should be granted the opportunity to speak first.

What do you guys think?

Please be advised that I reject the principal of equity by aesthetics, in an equal society we should all have a fair crack at the whipp and therfore equality of opportunity is superior.

How are you humanizing yourself and students today?

Two days before spring break in the wake of a false spring in Montana over here, I teach kiddos at an alternative school who do not often experience success in their grade books.

Today, we are taking a break from racing the report card clock and writing and talking about what we want to leave behind in winter and not carry with us into spring while eating oranges I bought at a roadside stand in a blizzard yesterday.

Hang in there, comrades, we've got this.-

It's so difficult for me to write essays.

English isn't my first language. I was in ESOL classes for around 3 years. They taught me some grammar very basic and very simple essays. They didn't teach me a lot, just vocabulary and more vocabulary. I can't write essays its a huge struggle now that they made me move on from esol. I struggled during 11th grade English, and now I'm in 12th grade. I'm struggling. I had to cheat to be able to write the essays I have to make. I'm going to university. idk what to do. How can I make my essays better? How can I improve my grammar? I'm thinking of getting grammarly, but I'm not sure if college will allow that.

Global History can help students understand national history much better

I believe teaching a bit about global history (or world history) can help students understand and interpret the history of their country much better. I think the book "A Compact History of Humankind" by David Christian, Ross E. Dunn, and Edmund Burke III is a good, but not perfect, example of a concise global history that helps students to put the history of their own country in the context of global history.

Masters of Education York University (MEd)

Hi! Was wondering if anyone could answer my question. I have been admitted to the graduate program (MEd) at York! I feel very conflicted on if I should do it or not. Is it worth it? Also, if anyone has done the program can you share a little bit about it? I’m planning on choosing the course work option but I also want to supply teach part time. Is the program intensive? Is there a lot of work / assignments?

Academic Textbooks are too long and expensive

I was surveying the most popular textbook for Biology education in colleges, Campbell's Biology (12th edition) yesterday. It's a huge book, with more than 1,400 pages, and it also costs €280.So I was wondering, why are textbooks often filled with unnecessary content (interviews, pictures, etc.)? If you remove all these contents and try to make the text more concise, again by removing unnecessary parts, you can easily lower the number of pages from 1,400 to 500.This will make the book easier to read and understand, more affordable for people with fewer financial resources, and most importantly, it will boost the speed of education by enabling students to learn in a more efficient way. Please correct me if I'm wrong

Bloom's Taxonomy

Analysis and Evaluation are necessary for comprehension, which is in turn necessary for knowledge. Bloom's Taxonomy is backwards. The order needs to be reversed for it to work as intended in the classroom and in curriculums.

You can't claim to comprehend anything without first analyzing and evaluating it. And you can't claim to have knowledge of anything without first comprehending it. The order of Bloom's Taxonomy is backwards. It needs to be reversed in terms of learning. The Taxonomy orders thinking skills -- anaysis and evaluation are higher order thinking skills. But the order of higher thinking tiers is not the best order of learning (or teaching). In fact, it's the opposite. The whole point of higher order thinking is that higher thinking skills are necessary for lower order thinking outcomes -- which is exactly why anyone should bother teaching them in the first place. Therefore critical thinking is necessary for all but a very superficial and shallow comprehension of anything and analysis and evaluation of new topics needs to happen before comprehension. In fact, that's the process of comprehending -- analysis and evaluation. And comprehension needs to happen before knowledge. In fact, comprehension is knowledge. Anything less is just a superficial "fake-knowledge."

Can bad grades cause truency?

I'll go into details if asked. My son's in 8 grade. He's started remote learning last year. His grades slowly declined. He's now to the point where he has all F. He has plenty of hours on his school work. 4-5 hours a day, 5-6 days a week. I do my best to guide him, but I'm not a teacher. So can he be considered in truency if he has consistent bad grades long term? I'm doing the best I can here, but I'm starting to lose sleep over this.

Should education be a project based environment?

I think the learning methods through project based learning is great in hindsight, but what do you think? Im a shop teacher so I have had a lot of my coworkers tell me, “well its easy to do in your classes.” Which is true. It is a project based field but what about algebra, language arts, history and the like? I can instruct on what a small engine is and explain some key terms, then I get them work and seeing the actual engine. How do you presume this would be done in other subjects and how might project based schools be more effective or of course ineffective, any big cons?

Is there a Perfect school?

The school is like a second home for children, shaping them whether they realize it or not. Is there a perfect school, a utopia within its own campus, offering an ideal environment for learning?

In this ideal school:

Students feel safe and encouraged to learn. The school involves the community and families in education. It sets high expectations and goals for students. Leadership inspires excellence. Student progress is closely monitored, and goals are set. Class sizes are small, allowing for personalized attention. Students have a say in their education. Teachers are knowledgeable and passionate. Behavior is managed effectively, and staff work well together. Communication is open and collaborative. Professional development is ongoing. The curriculum is engaging and prepares students for the future.

Why is Bilingual Education Important?

I decided to share this post with others as I have already seen some of the questions related to the learning of different languages as a second one.
Bilingual education bridges students to new cultures and perspectives in terms of remote jobs, proving crucial in our globalized society. Here's why it's so important:
Enhances Cognitive Abilities: Bilingual students often outperform their monolingual peers in problem-solving and multitasking, as learning a second language boosts brain flexibility.
Improves Academic Performance: These students show greater adaptability in academics, excelling in core subjects due to the mental discipline of language switching.
Cultural Awareness: It promotes empathy and understanding by introducing students to diverse cultures creating globally minded individuals.
Career Opportunities: Bilingualism opens up diverse career paths in international business, diplomacy, and more, making bilingual individuals highly valued in the job market. In my own example, knowing two languages, English and German, which are totally different, but it gives me more opportunities to work with different marketplaces.
Personal Growth: The journey of learning a second language boosts self-confidence and fosters an open-minded approach to life.
Preserves Linguistic Heritage: In diverse communities, it supports the preservation of indigenous languages and cultures.
In conclusion, bilingual education important because it shapes intellectually versatile and culturally aware individuals ready to succeed in a multicultural world. It's not just about language; it's about preparing for lifelong success.

Asking for help...

Hello,    The wholeass country actually needs some help. In my country (Lithuania), the ministry of education decided that kids in junior year should take exams in all subjects they take, and if you screw up, you'll can't retake it (the exception is this year juniors (we can retake it next year), because we are 'experimental bunnies': our teachers didn't know what to teach us, we didn't have any new learning materials).  This exam is 40% of the final exam. The exam was so hard that people who won first places in the math and physics Olympics couldn't score maximum; B-level tasks were harder than A-level mathematics. They are blaming us, students, that we "think too hard" or "could just boycott," but the truth is, if you don't go to the exam, your chances of taking it next year are 0. Not only that, the stress is unbearable: instead of taking 3-6 exams in senior year, in the course of 2 years we'll have to take ar least 8-10 exams, yes 10 as a minimum, and what if people want to take more subjects? For them - the number of exams rises. And the teachers are exhausted...   I am asking this as a junior myself: please sign this petition so that people in the ministry could finally understand that they fuckedup and they should cancel exams all together, and to make the minister resign. (And if you have questions about this situation, I am happy to tell you more about it:) )

The difference in the qualities of education even in the same state is INSANE

Hello! I'm heading to college very soon and the expectations are looking grim. I had the pleasure of transferring to a top-rated school and seeing the education I could've had and now I'm bitter.

There's so much that my old school neglected to teach me, even just basic things. And no, this isn't the typical, "I'm bad at school, so therefore school is bad," rant, I LOVE educating myself and learning more about the world and it's so invigorating.

But my old school, the one I was at for a majority of my high school years, was so ridiculously grade inflated and genuinely too easy and not even in a bragging way, but in a "we're seriously behind grade level," way.

When I transferred to my new school, there were so many content gaps, so many things that I should've learned at my old school and just didn't. Things I didn't even know existed. And I took the highest-level classes my old school had to offer. Our education genuinely sucks and I want better for me and other people.

The expectation is that people from that school are going to go to an auto-admit school with an education that is on par with the public. No one leaves the town. No one leaves the state.

I was lucky enough to get accepted into a college out of state. But I'm afraid I'm too behind. I'm self-studying and educating myself on the things I need to learn, but it's not fair that our school was so poorly budgeted.

It's not fair that I was told that my efforts were "good enough" when I was legitimately average/a little below average, and not just me, but every "top student" at that shifty rural school. I wish my guidance counselors hadn't lied to us and told us that our average was good. I wish they hadn't told us that our school wasn't grade-inflated when it was. I'm an honor roll student, but it doesn't MEAN anything if you're an the honor roll student of courses that are below average at best.

And now I have to fill in the gaps. I understand that ultimately, it's up to the student to be gifted and to study and to be intelligent, but I've seen schools with high budgets (I went to one for a few months) and the jump in the quality of education was INSANE. I feel like I was cheated out of the opportunity to do anything substantial.

I'm not trying to make excuses for my mediocrity or justify treating those with lower levels of education better or giving them special treatment, but I WISH there was some standardization of the levels of education. It's not fair that some kids have to go to these poorly funded mice mice-invested schools where we learn the most basic of information, just enough for us to get by and not excel, and meanwhile, this top-rated school is building their second Chem building.

And yes, I get that it's about the income and the taxes and how much people are willing to pay. Yes, I understand that these people whose children are going to these top-rated schools are paying for their kids to have a quality education. But damn it, most of us other kids never had a fucking chance. I only got into a decent college because I had the sense enough to work harder, not because I was smarter or anything.

And it's not even that we're dumb (which yes, kids not working hard is a problem however, I'm not saying the entire school board is to blame) but to say that we deserve to struggle just because we were born in the dirt while other kids are just handed the tools they're needed? Why is that fair? Sorry for whining, it's just so frustrating confirming what I knew since the day I entered that school. I knew the education was bad, but I never realized just the EXTENT of it.

Do students understand how to use the internet?

Would you say that student don’t understand how to find information on their phones or chromebooks? I teach shop class so many times I tell students theyll need to do some research while working on their engines. I expected they would be better st looking things up than I was, that is very untrue. They will search for 30 minutes finding nothing only leading to ask me to look and I find it in 2 minutes. Anyone else experience this? How do we make them more aware of how to use their devices and how to search for information?

Looking for longitudinal percentile growth standards in nationally normed tests.

The situation is this… I have a set of students in a relatively small dataset who are all from the same family. They’ve shown tremendous progress in nationally normed test results over the years. I want to know just how rare this performance is (it could be common, but I doubt it).

For example… Student A - 1st Grade Reading, 1st Percentile - 1st Grade Math, 1st Percentile - 6th Grade Reading, 71st Percentile - 6th Grade Math, 57th Percentile

Student B - 1st Grade Reading, 1st Percentile - 1st Grade Math, 1st Percentile - 5th Grade Reading, 37th Percentile - 5th Grade Math, 55th Percentile

Student C - 1st Grade Reading, 7th Percentile - 1st Grade Math, 4th Percentile - 5th Grade Reading, 33rd Percentile - 5th Grade Math, 26th Percentile

(Students B and C are twins, Student A is their older sibling)

My dataset is relatively small-n (SPED-only) but almost everybody else in it is pretty flat—if you were sub-10th percentile in 1st, you’re sub-10 in 5th. I’m considering doing a case study with this family, but I want to be sure I’m chasing an effect that is rare enough to matter. Since my dataset is small-n I’m loathe to just use it as my internal metric.

Does anybody have a notion of how rare growth is like this? I mean, do we see this type of growth in 5% of American students? 25%? Is Student A coming close to breaking records (that student is a clear outlier in my dataset, but again, small-n). When I search for things like “longitudinal improvement by-student” I’m not getting much other than just the boilerplate stuff from MAP and NAEP.

Any help is appreciated!

My brother's teacher threw a party because he wasnt in class. She did it to be funny and had no idea my brother would flip out when we he walked in on it. Her punishment or lack there of was a letter of reprimand. My brother still wants her fired over a year later but the principal said it was handled and said termination would be excessive.

Looking for direction.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask so excuse me if my post is inappropriate or whatever. Anyway, I am nearing the end of my last year in high school and have to go to university in a few months, but there is one issue: I cannot decide what exactly I want to study. I'm really torn between Mathematics and Theoretical Physics and really can't seem to get a sense of direction for what I truly want to study between the two. So I've come here to ask anybody who's willing to give me any insight or just an opinion. What do you think would be better off for me in the long run? What are questions I should be asking myself to really make my decision clearer? Thank you all in advance.

Is there a limit on how many high school transcripts can be sent from your school even after your graduated? Can high school officials refuse to do more?

Hello, I am relatively new to the education forum on subreddit, and I thought this would be the place to ask regarding my high school transcripts as it is sensitive information for a reason; I went to legal advice but I am not sure if it is anything extreme.

To begin, I am a community college student looking to transfer to private and out-of-state colleges (Ivies, Top 10 schools), and all of the colleges I am applying to require final official high school transcripts, where the school official sends them. Regardless of how long it’s been since I graduated high school, the said colleges need my high school official to send them (I’ve called the ones I applied to and said they have to send them)

Since February, I had tried to explain to the counselors at my school that I needed them to send my transcripts, which I was then told they were unable to as they do not do electronic transcripts, and on top of that only told me they would give only five physical copies. I went in person to speak to a former counselor I knew from high school, who was questioning why schools were asking for him to send it specifically if I’m not “lying” about attending my high, but I showed him the email University of Michigan sent me, which stated that physical or electronic, the High School needs to send it; not the student. That made him understand and from there, we sat down to list colleges I plan on applying to- which was more than eight.

However, two weeks ago, when I received my portal for the colleges I applied to, I saw that most of them did not have my high school transcript, so I called him and he said I can email him the colleges that need final transcripts.

I emailed him, he wanted to talk to me about it, and it was still the same question as to why can’t I send it primarily, in which I had to explain they need a guidance counselor from my high school to do it; I cannot do it. The other issue arose when he had an intern send the transcripts, and she had three transcripts sent to the wrong emails (one of them was to the wrong college). I figured they weren’t understanding me, so I called the board, in which I explained my concern.

I received a call two hours later from the director of guidance, who said they don’t send transcripts, and again, they don’t understand why my colleges are asking for them even though I graduated three years ago. I tried to tell them I cannot send them because it needs to be official, so after a 20 minute phone call of going back and forth, she directs me the email of the secretary.

So then here comes the same counselor secretary that said she would only give 5 transcripts. She told me at first that the maximum is five transcripts, as no kid she had applied to more than five schools. However, I needed 15 transcripts sent; these are colleges I applied to already. She then told me it’s not her fault I applied to 15 colleges. I had to tell her I told my counselor that day I went in person, that I listed more than 5 for him, and even my bf who was listening was going back and forth with her about the limit being 5. She then practically said the limit isn’t five, she just finds it absurd. As mentioned, they will only do physical copies now, which I do not understand because my counselor was able to do electronic pdf; but he messed up on so many colleges already.

I had to call my colleges and ask for an extension. I applied to all of them, and I might even offer to pay for my transcripts at this point. I am going in person to sort this out. I just need some advice on if they can be reluctant on doing transcripts for high school graduates.

Edit: The high school does not offer online services such as Parchment or Clearing House. I do not have any debts as well as I would have been notified the day I graduated high school. Also, I am in NJ.

Do you know anyone who either stayed back a grade, or skipped a grade? Do you honestly think that people who stayed back a grade, aren't smart?

I know you obviously have to really excel/be gifted in order to skip a grade, but I never agreed with the narrative that if you stayed back a grade, you were dumb or something. I know people who stayed back for all different reasons, and still I don't think that should define them, or their intelligence.

Will I get expelled…and tips for getting my life together if you have any

I (16F) am currently a student in my senior year at an international school.

I’m not a very good student conduct-wise, and have had 3 academic integrity infractions since I started high school, for skipping a test, forging an email, and using AI to write parts of an essay. I was suspended last week for this, though it remained internal and will not be reported to universities unless they explicitly ask.

I was genuinely remorseful each time, and you would’ve thought I’d have learned by now, but I’m currently in the IB Diploma Programme and have been really burned out, unfocused and unmotivated for the past year. I submitted two partially plagiarised essays as first drafts and didn’t get caught, all the whole fully intending to get my act together and fix them before the final deadline.

The deadline is March 15th, and I only just fixed the essays in a panic this week, after being unmotivated for months. However, my school has already uploaded the old drafts to the IB database, something which cannot be undone, and I neglected to communicate the academic integrity issues to my school. To make matters worse, I’ve been absent and tardy for many days this year due to burnout, and never really bothered despite the school’s repeated warnings — until now.

I’m planning to see if I can drop the IB diploma and take my school’s regular high school curriculum, as these plagiarised essays will not be graded/part of my curriculum if I do this. Even so, as I’m ultimately at the mercy of a school that I already don’t have a good track record at, are they likely to expel me straight up rather than letting me switch curriculums?

I never at any point believed what I was doing to be right. In fact, i’m truly remorseful and have tried to change- I know it’s a pathetic excuse, as befits a pathetic human being, and I don’t know what’s wrong with me. (I do have an Asperger’s and ADHD diagnosis from when I was younger, but to attribute my moral degeneracy to that is exploitative and beyond low- but would it help them go easy on me?) I have strong extracurriculars and am a high honour student; i guess I could say that I broke these rules to try to maintain that somehow, even when I’m just so tired of everything. I like to believe I’m a good person, but is this enough to prevent an expulsion? Or anything that could terribly impact my future?

Thanks so much for reading, and sorry about the rant. I’m just so lost rn and would appreciate any advice.

Saving and analyzing data from educational platforms

I am a med student so obviously I do lots of question banks (my preference is AMBOSS), but I also like to use coursera, khanacademy, anki, other online platforms, and even some offline resources to learn about things in general (not necessarily Medicine). The issue is I feel a lot of the learning is in vain if I can't track the progress of all my coursework simultaneously and it becomes a real hassle to switch between different platforms all the time. Also, I would love to have access to the progress insights from all my learning in one place with metrics and graphs and all that jazz. I know this is reaching, but is there any way to collect all the data and visualize/analyze it all in one place?

Thanks in advance!

Alternative education--information and name?

There was a viral video a few years back and I'm trying to put a name to the type of education it uses: https://youtu.be/syKJFUcdAls

It's not outdoor education, necessarily. Experiential sounds close. But, for example, in the same learning style you might learn Pythagoras' Theorem by racing your classmate across differing lengths of hypotenuse. Or you might explore a book that was read in class by following a treasure hunt around the playground in which the clues are solved by knowing key points in the narrative. Or learning chemistry by manipulating giant medicine balls that correspond to valence electrons. Etc.

Is there a name for this? Have there been schools that leaned more heavily toward such learning? Anything you can point me toward would be a massive help!

Going into a M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction with an unrelated bachelor’s

I have an undergrad in fashion merch and a master’s in fashion marketing. I worked corporate most of my 20s in e-comm/project management. I resigned and currently I teach dance and wellness (informally as in no teaching degree) and I want to move to education. Not necessarily teaching but I like the backend work of designing courses.

My initial thought was an M.Ed in Instructional Design but I spoke to someone in the industry and my skills from corporate can overlap so I don’t feel like I necessarily would need this and I can teach myself the tech programs.

Has anyone gone into the the curriculum design field with a different undergrad? Would love some insight, ty!

I believe AI can replace teachers in schools/colleges. Do you agree or disagree?

Most if not all teachers I encountered in my life were teaching for money. They didn't really teach me anything, and I had to learn everything myself from books. I am currently learning calculus with Google's Gemini Advanced. And it is able to teach me the concepts much better than a teacher. The bot can explain concepts like limit, derivative, and integrals with standard notations, and provide examples and solve basic equations, and even relate them to real life examples.

The best thing about the bot is that it doen't get angry no matter how many question you ask it. The bot also don't scold or chide when I wander off topic. It doesn't ridicule when you don't know basic problems like Lim (x--->1) (X2-1)/x-1.

I strongly believe AI can replace teachers esp. in colleges and universities. Unlike what most say (even AI bots), the teaching profession doesn't involve any critical thinking. You just have to teach facts that students have to learn, relate, and grasp. That's why I believe AI can easily replace teachers unless yo are a student with a really low IQ. As a student, do you agree or disagree?

Please give examples of student-centered learning. 😕

This is the new trend but what exactly does it mean? I've read definitions like students take charge of their learning, but experienced educators, what are some actual activities that illustrate student centered learning?

I am asking for concrete examples, not a definition of what student centered learning is or how students are empowered.

For example, I read one person say have pairs of kids check each other's work, instead of giving it to the teacher to mark.

Thanks and please respond. 😫

The idea of having an intelligent person deliberately avoid higher education(university) in favour of pursuing personal interests, and learning through the internet and other means is so fun

Jordan Peterson remarked that the most interesting individuals he has ever talked to were intelligent people who didn't go to university. They weren't forced to learn anything they detested, and so they didn't cut corners when studying. They didn't get spoiled by a more biased and general approach but rather allowed themselves to be educated more freely, and completely in accord with their interests, thus learning random skills and facts. Sure, it might lack depth, but the breadth of unusual and original things they might get exposed by means of this sort of education can make a very interesting case. It is fun to consider what the result of such an education could be.

In fact, loosely speaking, some remarkable people like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg(amongst others) were educated as such

"They didn't teach me about finances in school" ... about that

My father is an accountant and I have been surprised by how financially illiterate many of my college students are. I teach a large lecture course at a university and because of an upcoming exam I had free lecture period so I offered a financial information session. Attendance wasn't required, but I told them I would describe tax misconceptions (i.e., tax brackets), retirement plans, credit score information, real estate advice, etc. and take any questions they have to address the "I was never taught about finances in school" issue. I took several hours to prepare a useful PowerPoint in case there weren't many questions.
Only 5 of 133 students decided to attend.
I will no longer credit this excuse for people's financial ignorance.

Question about my American kid who went to school abroad for 2 years and is now returning to 9th grade in the US.

My family has been living abroad and working remotely in the US. Schools here are January to December, not September to June so he had to skip half a year to align with the school year when we moved here. He has done great and is in the first semester of 9th now. We are returning in June and he will re enter 9th in the US to re-align with American schools. We are hoping to leave here before the end of the school year because my wife has a new job opportunity in the US. School in the US will be out for the summer already. My question is: Will it hurt him to not have finished the year here, given that he will be repeating the first semester of 9th in the US anyway. My concern is that since he skipped a semester of 7th here, US schools will think of the first semester of 9th here (abroad) as the second semester of 8th there (the US ). If we stay the rest of the school year, which ends at the end of June, my son will be separated from his mother for an additional month. He also doesn't want to have to study for finals if he is redoing the semester in the US anyway.

Any input, wise ones?

The concept of wormholes has long fascinated both scientists and science fiction enthusiasts alike. Wormholes are like secret tunnels in space that connect different parts of the universe. People think they could be shortcuts for traveling long distances quickly. While wormholes remain purely theoretical constructs, their study has profound implications for our understanding of the cosmos and the possibilities for interstellar travel. Read more

Degree @40

Hello guys,

I'm about to hit my forties. I need to get a degree to start a career now (a long story). Though I've completed my degree I do not have my certificates with me and college disposed all the old documents through which I can retrieve them back.

So, I'm facing a lot of issues to get into a course without them. So, I'm thinking to take up a one year degree course and use the degree for further learning.

And the problem is I couldn't find anything online colleges like who could offer a degree without any documents. And the f there is a possibility of pursuing it from any renowned institution, I'll be much pleased with it.

  1. Does any institute offer you a degree/diploma without any documents? And any renowned institues in it?
  2. Is there anyone that did complete their courses in same way? And what is your experience?
  3. Please send me those details if you have. I'll be thankful to you.

Sharon Kennedy grew up expecting an ordinary life. Look where she ended up!

This is a completely true story.

Sharon Kennedy grew up intending to become a police officer. When she was ten, a teacher told her that she was capable of being much more; maybe a lawyer or a judge. She dismissed the idea. Nobody in her family had ever gone to college. She was born into a blue collar family, and expected to live a blue collar life. Her mom often told her things like, "Mind your place" and "Who died and made you Princess Grace?" Sometimes parents give negative messaging to their children without thinking about it. But what her teacher said stayed in the back of her mind.

Sharon grew up and, after earning a bachelor's degree in social work, became a police officer, in Hamilton Ohio, serving from 1985-89. One day, she was in court, testifying about a case. The defense attorney was cross-examining her, and was asking a lot of stupid questions. The realization came to Sharon like a bolt of lightning: "If someone as stupid as this guy can get through law school, I can do it too!"

So she contacted the University of Cincinnati and asked about law school. They enrolled her in a program. She took law courses while working as a law clerk in the Butler County Common Pleas Court, serving as the Director of the Victim/Witness Division. After graduating, she worked as an attorney in private practice, from 1991-98. Then she became a judge, serving from 1999-2012.

It was very difficult working as an attorney and a judge during this period due to what she describes as a "runaway court." In those years, the Ohio Supreme Court was filled with activist judges. It was very frustrating trying to practice law, when you could not know what the law was going to be from one week to the next.

So she did something about it. She ran for election, and has served as a Justice on the Ohio Supreme Court since 2012. This story still hasn't ended yet. The Chief Justice seat become open in 2022. So she ran for that office, and won!

This young girl, who grew up expecting to have drab, ordinary life, not even considering going to college, is now serving as the CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE OHIO SUPREME COURT!

At every stage of life, go ahead and do your best at whatever there is for you to do. Learn all you can from whatever you do. Keep improving your skills. Always keep preparing yourself for whatever opportunity might come before you in the future. You really could go A LOT farther in life than you think right now!

Best degree for educational administration?

Advice Needed

Hi! I started this year as a paraprofessional. In our room, there’s the gen Ed teacher, me, another aide and a behavior tech. I LOVE my job. I love the admin. I love the kids so much. My only issue is the staff I’m in the class with. It’s difficult because I am the newbie trying to fit in while the three adults are already established friends. They don’t include me in any conversations, class updates, or anything outside of work. Again, I understand because they were already friends. I just feel extremely alone and it makes me feel awful. Anytime I do talk to them, they are short with me and won’t acknowledge my presence at all. i can feel myself shrink down to nothing. What do I do??? Do I be honest with this teacher about how I’m feeling??? Am I being dramatic??? How do I bring this up without getting pushed away even more?? I feel extremely isolated and alone, especially when I spend my entire day with them in the classroom. It’s emotionally draining at this point being the one who doesn’t fit in and I just feel like I don’t have a place 😩

English Language Lab Role: The Key to Language Learning

English language learning software has revolutionized language learning, with English Language Labs playing a crucial role in providing personalized learning experiences. These labs offer real-time assistance with vocabulary and pronunciation, monitor student progress, and identify areas for improvement. Grammar development is another key aspect of language learning, evaluating an employee's comprehension of grammar standards.

Vocabulary skills involve reading and using words effectively, and labs support vocabulary growth and teach grammatical ideas. Effective listening is essential for building strong interactions and making wiser choices. The English Language Lab Software facilitates comprehension activities, enhancing listening skills, and helping students recognize unique pronunciations and speaking techniques. Offline use is recommended, offering access to specific lessons, interactive courses, real-time feedback, and progress monitoring.
